ABSTRACT

According to the interview survey of 374 disabled persons due to chronic non-specific lung diseases, residing in rural areas of two regions of the Ukrainian SSR and engaged primarily in agricultural industry it was found that 66.6 percent of them considered the harmful effect of industrial conditions as the main cause of their disability. Some other factors were also considered important: late applications for medical aid apropos of the major disease, inadequate treatment, insufficient and inadequate examination at curative establishments, smoking, similar diseases in the family anamnesis, etc. Among the interviewed persons unsatisfied with treatment (47.2%) the majority pointed out shortcomings in the performance of district and central hospitals. The study of different aspects in the provision of medico-social care for the disabled persons with chronic non-specific lung diseases permitted to suggest measures aimed at improving the performance of public health and social welfare bodies and institutions.

ABSTRACT

For the first time ever, a familial study of 15,319 residents of three administrative districts in Leningrad has provided data on the prevalence of premorbid pulmonary conditions (157%) and chronic nonspecific pulmonary disease (118%). For Leningraders, average risk of premorbid conditions transforming into clinical ones was about 40%, which is the most objective criterion of the efficiency of bronchopulmonary disease prevention programs in large cities. In addition, data on the pattern of transformation of premorbid conditions into chronic nonspecific pulmonary disease are presented with respect to sex and age.

ABSTRACT

This paper provides the results of the analysis of 3013 hospital admissions for bronchial asthma. The hospitalized incidence of bronchial asthma under conditions of big industrial cities is 5.5 per 10,000 adult population. Among measures of primary and secondary prevention of bronchial asthma in adult population-residents of big cities, priority should be given to the adequate treatment of pre-asthmatic conditions. The number of beds utilized for hospitalization of patients with bronchial asthma is 0.6 per 10,000 adult population per year.
