ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a phenomenon similar to motion sickness frequently observed in users of visual technologies. The Visually Induced Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (VIMSSQ), developed by Golding et al. (2006), is considered the most effective scale for assessing VIMS susceptibility levels. The main purpose of this study was to standardize the selection of participants for research conducted with virtual reality, especially motion sickness (MS) research. To achieve this, first, the Turkish version of the VIMSSQ was created to establish its validity and reliability, and subsequently, its correlation with the Turkish Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire Short form (HDDA), the expanded version of the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire Short form (MSSQ), was examined. Subjects and. METHODS: Linguistic equivalence assessment was obtained from ten experts by passing the VIMSSQ through the translation process. The VIMSSQ and the Turkish MSSQ forms were then administered to 49 subjects. This study statistically analyzed the validity and reliability of the VIMSSQ and its relationship with the MSSQ. RESULTS: Results showed that the Turkish version of the original questionnaire is highly reliable (Cronbach alpha=0.843). There is a moderate statistically significant positive correlation between the total MSSQ scores and the subfactors of the VIMSSQ. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, VIMSSQ was successfully adapted to Turkish, normative data demonstrated its validity, and all sub-factors were highly reliable. The Turkish version of the VIMSSQ can serve as a valuable tool for estimating individual susceptibility to VIMS.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Motion sickness (MS) can be triggered by direct or indirect stimuli due to mismatches in the visual-vestibular autonomic pathways. Various studies in the literature have shown that virtual reality technologies can generate provocative stimuli for MS. Therefore, our primary aim is to investigate the usability of virtual reality systems in MS rehabilitation METHODS: 20 normal and 19 MS patients were included. A total of six virtual reality rehabilitation sessions (VRrs) with a game called "Roller Coaster Dreams" playable via PlayStation VR Head Mounted Display were applied thrice a week for 2 weeks, or twice a week for 3 weeks. Participants were evaluated at the pre-rehabilitation phase twice and after third and sixth rehabilitation sessions with the sensory organization test (SOT). The effectiveness of the rehabilitation program was statistically analyzed by comparing the results of SOTs. RESULTS: All SOT results of the patient group were compared each other to evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitation. According to the post-hoc comparisons, a statistically significant difference was found between the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th SOT- Equilibrium Scores; Condition 2 (p = 0.043), Condition 3 (p = 0.006), Condition 4 (p = 0.031), Condition 5 (p = 0.002) and Condition 6 (p = 0.040). There is no difference obtained in Condition 1 (p > 0.05). The Equilibrium Scores of SOT 3rd and SOT 4th were similar and 4th SOT-Equilibrium Scores were the highest among all SOT measurements. The results show that while the first three sessions were accepted as an orientation and adaptation sessions, 4th, 5thand 6th sessions are habilitation sessions. CONCLUSIONS: VR proved to be significantly effective and useful for MS rehabilitation. Additionally, observations indicated that using VR makes rehabilitation fun, increases the efficiency of the process, and reduces the risk of inadaptability to exercise.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study is to investigate the necessity of questioning virtual reality systems in the motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire (MSSQ)-short form. The secondary objective of this study is to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the MSSQ-short form, with proven validity and reliability. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In the questionnaire form, for which expert opinion was obtained to maintain linguistic equivalence, the virtual reality items were added to the questionnaire. The questionnaire was then administered to 297 individuals. The results were statistically analyzed with and without these virtual reality items for validity and reliability. RESULTS: After the addition of the virtual reality items, the reliability of the questionnaire was found to be quite high (Cronbach's alpha r=0.912). The norm values between the original MSSQ-short form (12.9±9.9) and the Turkish MSSQ-short form (13.8±12.9) were found to be consistent. CONCLUSIONS: Motion sickness symptoms can occur not only during movement, but also with indirect stimulus. Our findings suggest that adding virtual reality items to the original form is important in long term practical applications. Our results show that the Turkish version of the original questionnaire is quite reliable. Submission of the MSSQ-short form in Turkish will be useful for documentation and will also encourage further research in this area.
