ABSTRACT

Streptomycete 1401 inhibiting the growth of gram-positive organisms was isolated from a soil sample in the screening of new antibiotics. By its cultural and morphological properties the culture was classified as Str. corchorusii. An antibiotic complex was isolated from the mycelium of the culture. The main component of the complex was shown to belong to the antibiotics of the siomycin group.

ABSTRACT

An actinomycetous culture 2562 inhibiting the growth of gramnegative bacteria was isolated from a soil sample. The culture was classified as Streptomyces griseovariabilis. It was found that culture 2562 produced an antibiotic belonging to the group of novobiocin. It consists of 2 components. One of them is identical to chlorobiocin and the other is a minor component of this group. Some parameters of the antibiotic complex production by strain 2562 under submerged conditions were studied. Nutrient media providing the predominant biosynthesis of the first (main) or the second component of the antibiotic were developed.

ABSTRACT

A culture of a new species of Nocardia, i.e. N. indigoensis producing an antibiotic close to celicomycins was isolated from a soil sample of Kazakhstan plated on the selective medium with kanamycin. By a number of chemical properties and biological activity the antibiotic differed from celicomycins. Probably it is a new natural substance.

ABSTRACT

A culture of a new actinomycetous species, Nocardiopsis syrinage was isolated from a soil sample. The antibiotic produced by it was named nocamycin. It accumulated in the culture fluid on cultivation of the organism in a nutrient medium containing soybean meal, glycerin, sodium chloride and calcium carbonate. Crystalline nocamycin had an antitumor effect. In inhibited by 72--73 per cent the development of an intraperitoneally implanted lymphadenosis of strain NK/LI in mice.

ABSTRACT

A new complex medium for biosynthesis of lincomycin by strain R-367 was developed using one-factor experiments and mathematical schemes of planning. A complex of mineral salts containing nitrogen, sulphur, phosphurus, magnesium and trace elements was introduced into the content of the new medium. This provided elimination of corn steep liquor from the medium. The linomycin production level in the fermentation broth with the use of the new medium was at an average 2.5 times higher than that on the initial medium containing corn steep liquor.

ABSTRACT

A biological method for determination of geliomycin activity using agar diffusion is described. A nutrient medium containing Hottinger broth up to 35 mg per cent of amine nitrogen, 1.5 percent of agar-agar, tap water, pH 7.8 to 8.0 was used. Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 served as the test-culture. Geliomycin was dissolved in 0.1 N sodium hydroxide solution.

ABSTRACT

In the screening programme using selective media with streptomycin (25, 50 and 100 gamma/ml) and bruneomycin (0.5, 1 and 2 gamma/ml) 3 unusual actinomycetous cultures forming short, rarely long chains of straight, hook-like or spiral spores with 1 or rarely 2 turns were isolated. The study of the cell wall composition of the isolates showed that the walls contained meso-diaminopimelic acid and a sugar madurose. On the basis of the morphological structure and the cell wall composition the isolates were classified as belonging to Actinomadura. Comparison of the cultures with the Actinomadura species described in the literature showed that the isolates were new species of the genera, i. e. Am. coerulea sp. nov., Am. cremea sp. nov. and Am. salmonea sp. nov.

ABSTRACT

The nutrient medium for biosynthesis of carminomycin by Actinomadura carminata, strain 4281 was optimized with the methods of mathematical planning of the experiment. The starting variant of the medium, production of carminomycin on which was assumed equal to 100 per cent was enriched during the experiments carried out according to the patterns of the orthogonal latin squares. The production levels of carminomycin on the above medium was more than 3 times higher than those on the starting medium.
