ABSTRACT

Massive edema of the ovary is a rare condition found in young women as a result of partial or intermittent torsion of the ovary. Differentiation of this entity from tumors of the ovary is important to prevent overtreatment. Organ-preserving surgical treatment is indicated as the correct approach to management. We present a case of massive edema of the ovary associated with post partum involution of the female genital tract and discuss the clinical features in the light of the known literature.

ABSTRACT

A high-purity germanium detector was calibrated for the assessment of 125I uptake in the thyroid gland of radiation workers. A cylindrical water phantom (perspex walls) with high flexibility for position and size of the thyroid was constructed. Within a massive shielding chamber built for a whole-body counter, an activity of 2.2 Bq was detectable (MDA). This is well below the very restrictive limiting value of 20 Bq for inhalation specified by Austrian law. An activity of 128 Bq was measured with a statistical uncertainty of 5% in a counting period of 10 min. Various parameters influencing the result are investigated as well as the performance of two other measurement geometries outside the shielding chamber.

ABSTRACT

Paired samples of stool and serum of 32 members of the Shipibo tribe resident in the rain forest of the Peruvian lowlands were tested for worm egg count and serum lipid parameters, respectively. 90% of the stool samples tested were found to contain eggs or larvae of several worm species, most commonly 3 or 4 different species. Serum lipid levels were found to be relatively low, most probably due to a low proportion of dietary fat ranging from 16-31%. Statistical analysis showed a significant inverse correlation between worm egg excretion and HDL levels which was true for hookworm, strongyloides and trichuris, but not for ascaris. The mechanisms underlying the observed association between intestinal worm load and HDL reduction are not completely understood and may include reduced HDL synthesis in the gut wall due to inflammatory and/or toxic irritation.

ABSTRACT

Radioactive caesium nuclids were measured in follicular fluid and seminal plasma after the nuclear power station accident of Chernobyl. Immediately after the event (June - Aug. 86) both Cs 137 and Cs 134 were negative, with the exception of one sample. Increased levels of Cs 137 were found in the next three periods of measurement (Nov. 86 - Jan. 87), (June - Aug. 87), (March 88), with the highest results one year after the accident. Increased levels of Cs 134 were found only in the last two periods of measurement. In seminal plasma, both Cs 137 and Cs 134, were elevated in some samples. An influence on the results of IVF was not registered.
