ABSTRACT

Hepatitis is a common complication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease in children. Often a distinct pathogen cannot be identified. Therefore, by exclusion, one must consider HIV the direct pathogen. Zidovudine (AZT) has not been used as a treatment for HIV-positive children with presumed HIV-induced hepatitis because of the potential of this medication to exacerbate preexisting hepatitis. We have used AZT to treat an 8-month-old female with severe HIV-induced hepatitis and have achieved complete remission with this regimen. For some HIV-positive children with HIV-induced hepatitis, AZT may be the drug of choice to resolve hepatic inflammation caused by this virus.

ABSTRACT

Oncogene expression has been found to be a potential marker for aggressive biologic behavior in certain tumors. We studied 21 follicular adenomas and 20 follicular carcinomas by immunocytochemistry utilizing specific monoclonal antibodies against HER-2/neu and c-myc oncogenes. Survival data were obtained from our institution's tumor registry. No expression of the HER-2/neu oncogene was found in the specimens studied. Cytoplasmic staining for c-myc was observed in 3 of 21 adenomas (14%) and 9 of 20 (45%) carcinomas (p < 0.05). The incidence of local, regional, and distant metastases was not significantly different in c-myc (+) and c-myc (-) patients. The c-myc oncogene is expressed more often in malignant than in benign follicular neoplasms of the thyroid, but its expression does not appear to be a good prognostic indicator.

ABSTRACT

A traumatic venous aneurysm within the greater saphenous vein occurred in a 15-year-old hockey player. The patient had early diagnosis and surgical excision of the lesion. Venous aneurysm is a rare clinical entity and a pathologic curiosity in the absence of varicose veins. It can lead to serious complications, such as pulmonary embolism, portal hypertension, and rupture. Early diagnosis with the use of venography and surgical excision of the lesion can prevent major complications.
