ABSTRACT

This study explores adolescents' subjective experiences when facing body measurements at school, performed to evaluate the effects of a school-based intervention to promote physical activity. Three semi-structured interviews (n = 3) and two focus groups (n = 7 and 3) were conducted with adolescents after measuring some variables related to their weight and adiposity. Observational data (n = 88) collected by the two researchers in charge of the measurements were also obtained. Findings derived from our thematic analysis question the suitability of body measurements as social contexts where the core ideas of healthism emerge. Some adolescents lived body measurements as negative social experiences, promoting body dissatisfaction, social comparison, embarrassment, and simplistic associations between health and body shape, which could hinder their adherence to healthy habits. We emphasize the role of qualitative research when evaluating pre/posttests of school-based intervention studies, not just the interventions themselves, to generate knowledge to improve research protocols and prevent unwanted psychological outcomes in participants.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess physical conditions related to health status and establish relationships with influencing factors such as family structure, educational level, and parental professional occupation in the infant stage of three to five years in a rural setting. The sample included 205 children between 3 and 5 years of age from rural areas (<10,000 inhabitants) from the region of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). Fitness level was measured using the PREFIT battery; influencing factors were assessed with a family information questionnaire. The results showed significant differences in all the analyzed variables of physical condition and between genders at each of the educational levels except for body mass index. Boys performed better than girls on cardio-respiratory fitness tests, muscle strength in both hands, speed-agility, and longitudinal jump tests for boys aged three, while girls performed the test better at four years. The type of family structure was not correlated with any of the variables of physical condition; a lower level of education of the father and mother and the professional occupation of the mother were correlated with a higher body mass index. As a main conclusion, physical condition related to health seems to be affected by influencing factors such as educational level and family professional occupation, especially of the mother, but the type of family structure does not have as much influence. There are few studies in children from three to five years of age in exclusively rural areas, so the data in this study provides relevant and innovative information, while opening research to cater to this population group.

ABSTRACT

Abstract In this article, several strategic dimensions from eight Ibero-American journals of Physical Education/Sports Sciences (five Brazilian, two Spanish and one Portuguese) included in the new Web of Science platform are evaluated. It is aimed to both refl ect on the coming challenges they will face and be useful in improving the quality of these publications. The analysis was performed from the 2012 published issues and from the information available in their websites. The results show that, overall, transparency and management of the editorial process are improvable and that their internationalization and visibility are still weak.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to analyze the variability of physical activity levels, according to the season (winter, autumn) and type of day (weekend, school day), in a sample of 395 Spanish adolescents aged 17-18 years old. Physical activity was measured with the Four by one-day physical activity questionnaire. Adolescents showed more energy expenditure in winter (M = 39.97 Kcal/kg/day) than in autumn (M = 37.31 Kcal/kg/day), and during the weekend (M = 39.29 Kcal/kg/day) than the school day (M = 37.99 Kcal/kg/day). Chi-square tests showed that more teens were 'active' and 'moderately active' in these periods in which there were also more energy expenditure. Nevertheless, in autumn adolescents showed more energy expenditure during the school day (M = 38.56 Kcal/kg/day) than the weekend (M = 36.06 Kcal/kg/day), while the opposite happened in winter (M = 42.52 Kcal/kg/day during weekend and M = 37.41 Kcal/kg/day during school day). Results from this study indicate season and type of day may influence adolescents’ physical activity levels, but differently compared to other countries or geographical areas. According to this specific variability, several strategies for the promotion of physical activity in the most inactive periods of the week and the year are suggested (AU)

ABSTRACT

The inclusion of journals in the Web of Science is an important recognition for their scientific communities, but editors have to continue to improve their quality. this is the reason why this study evaluates five Brazilian and Spanish journals of Sport Sciences through a comparison of 15 indicators of transparency, editorial management, visibility and internationalization. The results show the need to broaden their information, the agility of their editorial processes to reduce the time between submission and publication of articles, and improve their impact factor. Among the editorial strategies to increase their excellence, we propose the following: emphasize the internationalization of authorship, moderating the amount of selfcitations, increase circulation via social networks and incorporate other value added services (AU)
