ABSTRACT

The authors evaluate their experience with ultrasonographic (USG) examinations of the shoulder they performed in the period between 1992 and 1999. They concentrate mainly on the diagnosis of the lesion of the rotator cuff. They describe methodology of the examination, the used examination positions, instruments and present some pathological findings. They also present possibilities of these diagnostic methods and the indications where the efficiency of its use is limited or zero. They emphasize the necessity of a perfect mastering of the examination technique, a simultaneous clinical examination, x-ray examination and special x-ray projections, if need be. In total they performed 1000 examinations and processed the total number of 762 examinations. Of this number they performed 499 examinations for a suspected rupture of the rotator cuff. They compare the results with per-operative arthroscopic and open revision findings. In this way they processed a group of 78 patients operated on shoulders with preoperative USG. Key words: ultrasonography of shoulder, examination technique, normal and pathological findins.

ABSTRACT

The author present results of surgeries by the modified Boyd-McLeod procedure performed in the period 1985-1995. He evaluated results of 285 operations and compared them with the results of 54 operations performed by Hohmann procedure in 1982-1984 at the same clinic. He also compares the results with other surgical methods of different authors. However, the comparison is difficult due to different criteria used for the evaluation of the results of operations. Excellent and good results were achieved in 88 % cases by the modified Boyd-McLeod procedure as compared to only 79 % of excellent and good results of Hohmann procedure. In contrast to the original method they do not resect annular ligament along the whole circumference but only its part. Both the Boyd-McLeod surgical procedure and the given modification solves the problem in the most comprehensive way as compared to all other methods published so far. Key words: tennis elbow, surgical treatment, Boyd-McLeod procedure.

ABSTRACT

The authors examined between May 1988 and April 1992 more than 15 000 hip joints. In the submitted paper they present the statistically processed results of 14 296 ultrasonographic (USG) examinations of hip joints of children evaluated according to Professor Graf's s method. For the USG examination they elaborated their own procedure and computer programme which fully replaces the card index and dispensary and makes statistical processing of the results possible. The authors demonstrate on their own group that USG examination can replace X-ray examination, if the child is subjected to two USG examinations. They submit for discussion the necessity of clinical examination during the sixth week of the infant. They also draw attention to the necessity of perfect knowledge of the examination technique and high standard training courses. They mention a marked decline of pathological X-ray findings of examinations after the age of three months due to USG screening of the hip joints in neonates. Key words: congenital dysplasia of the hip joint, ultrasonographic examination.

ABSTRACT

The authors present their first experience with sonographic examination of children's hip joints. Between May 1988 and the end of 1989 they examined in total 4000 children's hip joints. They made a group of patients comprising 1500 hip joints in 750 children. The examination was performed by a portable sonographic 5 MHz probe. In the given group there occurred the decrease of the number of pathological x-ray findings in the 3rd month to 6.6 per cent as compared to 14.1 per cent in the control group. The authors explain this decrease by a timely treatment also of clinically negative findings in case of the pathological sonographic finding in the maternity hospital.
