ABSTRACT

The human oral microbiome has emerged as a focal point of research due to its profound implications for human health. The involvement of short-chain fatty acids in oral microbiome composition, oral health, and chronic inflammation is gaining increasing attention. In this narrative review, the results of early in vitro, in vivo, and pilot clinical studies and research projects are presented in order to define the boundaries of this new complicated issue. According to the results, the current research data are disputable and ambiguous. When investigating the role of SCFAs in human health and disease, it is crucial to distinguish between their local GI effects and the systemic influences. Locally, SCFAs are a part of normal oral microbiota metabolism, but the increased formation of SCFAs usually attribute to dysbiosis; excess SCFAs participate in the development of local oral diseases and in oral biota gut colonization and dysbiosis. On the other hand, a number of studies have established the positive impact of SCFAs on human health as a whole, including the reduction of chronic systemic inflammation, improvement of metabolic processes, and decrease of some types of cancer incidence. Thus, a complex and sophisticated approach with consideration of origin and localization for SCFA function assessment is demanded. Therefore, more research, especially clinical research, is needed to investigate the complicated relationship of SCFAs with health and disease and their potential role in prevention and treatment.

ABSTRACT

Adipokines are currently widely studied cellular signaling proteins produced by adipose tissue and involved in various processes, including inflammation; energy and appetite modulation; lipid and glucose metabolism; insulin sensitivity; endothelial cell functioning; angiogenesis; the regulation of blood pressure; and hemostasis. The current review attempted to highlight the key functions of adipokines in the inflammatory mechanisms of obesity, its complications, and its associated diseases. An extensive search for materials on the role of adipokines in the pathogenesis of obesity was conducted online using the PubMed and Scopus databases until October 2022.

ABSTRACT

The great importance of diet for health and high life-expectancy is established. The impact of nutrients on immune system is a point of growing research interest. Recent studies have found pro- and anti-inflammatory properties of some diet patterns and nutrients that can be used from the bench to the bedside for chronic low-grade inflammatory status correction. In this regard, the assessment of potential effects of nutrition on macrophage differentiation, proliferation, and functioning in health and disease is highly demanded. In this review, we present current data on the effects of nutrients on the macrophage functioning.

ABSTRACT

Regular physical activity significantly affects lipid status. In this literature review, the specific features of athletes blood lipid profiles were analysed. Professional athletes blood lipid status was found considerably preferable compared to sex- and age-matched sedentary population. Regardless of endurance or power type of sports activities, athletes perform lower levels of TC, LDL-C and TG and comparable or higher blood levels of HDL-C. The differences in blood lipids levels and sports disciplines were introduced. Although there are much more factors as diet, place of origin, training regime, and even genetic predisposition that should be taken into consideration for future research.

ABSTRACT

The issue of vitamin deficiency persists to be a major health issue worldwide despite the advancements in medicine. At the same time, the effect of marginal vitamin deficiency status on physiological processes is proven. However, general methods such as immune-enzyme and fluorescence analysis, microbiological assays, for example, have limitations in vitamin status assessment and are not able to reliably reflect personal vitamin demand. The potential usefulness of modern metabolomics methods in vitamin status assessment is described in this review. These methods can be used for vitamin metabolites detection as well as for comprehensive metabolic phenotyping that makes them even more valuable.
