ABSTRACT

Objetivo: Describir las características del uso de tratamiento alternativo y complementario en dismenorrea en mujeres en edad fértil de una ciudad del norte de Perú. El estudio: Estudio trasversal analítico en mujeres en edad fértil en Mórrope, Lambayeque. Previa capacitación sobre dismenorrea y principales variables. Se entrevistó a 336 mujeres en sus domicilios previa aceptación de consentimiento informado. Hallazgos: Predominó en población estudiada el grupo etario de 15 a 35 años con 83,92% (n=282), con educación secundaria el 57,14% (n=192), más del 90% tenían estrato socioeconómico inferior/marginal. Referente a la dismenorrea, se encontró más del 30% con dolor severo/insoportable, cuyo tratamiento principal fue la MAC con 82,1%(n=220). Las plantas fueron la principal MAC, hallando solamente asociación de uso de MAC con la variable religión (p=0,023). Conclusiones: Las mujeres en edad fértil emplean notoriamente la MAC, como la fitoterapia, como tratamiento de dismenorrea a pesar de no encuentran alivio.


Objetive:To describe the characteristics of the use of alternative and complementary treatment in dysmenorrhea in women of childbearing age in a city in northern Peru. Cross-sectional analytical study in women of The study:childbearing age in Mórrope, Lambayeque. ABSTRACT

Se compara la calidad de vida percibida por pacientes con cáncer avanzado de un hospital terciario según atención en domicilio versus hospitalaria. Estudio observacional, transversal, incluyó pacientes mayores de 18 años con cáncer con metástasis múltiple. Se aplicó encuesta de calidad de vida EORTC QLQ-C15-PAL a los pacientes con adecuado nivel cognitivo (cuestionario de Pfeiffer). Se utilizó Chi cuadrado y Mann-Whitney, p<0,05, y SPSS 24.0. 83 pacientes grupo hospitalario y 69 domiciliario. Mediana de edad 66 años y 76 respectivamente (p<0,01); predominó el sexo femenino (p=0,60). Presentó deterioro cognitivo moderado o severo, 25% grupo hospitalario y 58% domiciliario (p<0,01). La mediana del puntaje de calidad de vida fue 49,5 grupo hospitalario y 48 domiciliario (p=0,60), el aspecto funcional físico tuvo menor puntuación en grupo hospitalario (p<0,01). La calidad de vida percibida es aceptable, el grupo domiciliario tienen mayor edad y deterioro cognitivo.


The quality of life perceived by patients with advanced cancer from a tertiary hospital is compared according to home care versus hospital care. Observational, cross-sectional study, included patients older than 18 years with cancer with multiple metastases. EORTC QLQ-C15-PAL quality of life survey was applied to patients with adequate cognitive level (Pfeiffer questionnaire). Chi square and Mann-Whitney, p <0.05, and SPSS 24.0 were used. 83 patients in the hospital group and 69 at home. Median age 66 and 76 years respectively (p <0.01); the female sex predominated (p = 0.60). They presented moderate or severe cognitive impairment, 25% hospital group and 58% home (p <0.01). The median quality of life score was 49.5 in the hospital group and 48 in the home group (p = 0.60), the physical functional aspect had a lower score in the hospital group (p <0.01). The perceived quality of life is acceptable, the home group is older and has cognitive impairment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the hypoglycemic effect of the aqueous extract of Moringa oleifera (moringa), Smallanthus sonchifolius (yacon) and metformin on Rattus norvegicus, albino variety, with induced diabetes mellitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preclinical, experimental, controlled and randomized study. Diabetes was induced intraperitoneally with a dose of alloxan at 130 mg/kg. A total of 24 male Rattus norvegicus, albino variety, Holfzman strain (6 per group) were used. They were divided as follows: control group (no treatment), metformin group (14 mg/kg), M. oleifera group (200 mg/kg), and S. sonchifolius group (140 mg/kg), treatments were administered via orogastric tube for 15 days. Glycemia levels were determined using an Accu-Chek® Instant electronic glycometer (Roche). RESULTS: Decreased glycemia was observed in the treatment groups: M. oleifera (p = 0.009), S. sonchifolius (p = 0.002) and metformin (p = 0.002), by 313 mg/dL, 281.5 mg/dL and 415 mg/dL, respectively. When comparing glycemia in the treated and control groups, no difference was observed (P > 0.05) at 24 hours and four days of treatment; while at the eighth (P < 0.05) and fifteenth day (P < 0.01) the treated groups had lower glycemia than the control group, but it was similar among them. CONCLUSION: The aqueous extract of S. sonchifolius, M. oleifera, and metformin presented similar hypoglycemic effect in experimental rats with induced diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer incidence has increased over the last years, becoming a major public health problem. OBJECTIVE: To describe the awareness, behavior and attitudes concerning sun exposure among beachgoers in the northern coast of Peru. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in the Pimentel beach, Peru. The "Beach Questionnaire" was used and we surveyed all the beachgoers from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from March 5 to March 19. For the statistical analysis, sun exposure habits, sunburns history, knowledge, attitudes and practices were crossed with sex using the chi2 test. RESULTS: We surveyed 410 beachgoers, the most frequent phototype was type III (40.5%). Only the 13.66% of the respondents correctly answered the seven knowledge questions related to sun exposure and skin cancer. Men more frequently agreed that "when they are tanned their clothes looks nicer" (p = 0.048). Likewise, regarding the questions "Sunbathing is relaxing" and "Sunbathing improves my mood", men agreed or totally agreed with more frequency than women (63.64% vs. 46.15%, p < 0.001; and 61.36% vs 49.15%, p = 0.014, respectively). Regarding sun protection practices, women more frequently used sunshade (p = 0.001) and sunscreen (SPF ≥ 15) (p < 0.001) when compared to the male group. CONCLUSION: Sun exposure is a potentially preventable risk factor for skin cancer. Thus, awareness of the risks of UVR overexposure and adequate sun-protective behaviors and attitudes are essential. Our results, however, are not as favorable as expected. Public health efforts should encourage sun-safety precautions and intervention campaigns should be carried out in recreational settings, such as the beaches.
