ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of psychiatric symptoms and evaluate the perceptive, cognitive, and behavioral aspects of body image in cosmetic surgery patients. These parameters of 20 cosmetic patients and of 20 control patients matched for age, gender, education, and marital status who attended the general surgery department for minor surgery were compared in a cross-sectional design. Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and The Multi-Dimensional Body Self Relations Questionnaire were administered to both groups. No significant difference was determined in the rates of psychopathology of the patient and control groups. Scales assessing self-image did not indicate any significant difference between the groups. Four (20%) of the cosmetic patients, however, were diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder according to DSM-IV. Cosmetic patients were usually defensive towards psychological evaluations. A wide range of diversity was determined in the psychiatric evaluation of the cosmetic patient group. While some patients exhibited healthy psychological traits, some had severe depressive disorder or nearly psychotic somatic preoccupations.

ABSTRACT

Fifteen patients with DSM-III-R diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were rated according to the Turkish version of the Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) and the US National Institute of Mental Health Global Obsessive Compulsive Scale (NIMH-GOCS) by 7 raters independently from audiotaped interviews. Patients also completed the Maudsley Obsessive Compulsive Inventory (MOCI). Interrater reliability of Y-BOCS and NIMH-GOCS were very good as well as correlations between these two scales. The correlations of MOCI with Y-BOCS and NIMH-GOCS were not significant. We found Y-BOCS and NIMH-GOCS to be reliable and valid instruments in assessing the severity of OCD. These findings suggest that MOCI may not be a suitable instrument for assessing the severity of OCD.

ABSTRACT

Sixteen measles cases were studied during an epidemic that broke out in Etimesgut district of Ankara. Eight of these children had never been vaccinated against measles while the remainder had been vaccinated at nine months of age. In the sera obtained during the course of the illness, anti-measles antibody was not detectable in six vaccinated children and in four unvaccinated children. Upon observing the siblings of the subjects, it was determined that one out of three who had not been vaccinated against measles and three out of seven who had been vaccinated at nine months of age contracted the disease within a month. However none of the siblings who had been vaccinated against measles at 15 months contracted the disease. In our cases, although vaccination at nine months of age could not prevent measles, it resulted in a milder form of the disease. It seems that measles vaccine administered to infants at around nine months of age does not prevent the occurrence of the disease in many children.
