ABSTRACT

The serum and urine beta 2-microglobulin levels were determined in patients with chronic recurrent pyelonephritis and in healthy controls. The urine beta 2-microglobulin level was considerably increased in the patients with chronic recurrent pyelonephritis which is linked with the activity of the disease.

ABSTRACT

The time course of the development of morphological changes was studied in the liver of rats given intraperitoneal injections of nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) in a dose of 130 mg/kg, weekly, during 9 weeks, in the presence of full value hypocalorific (70% calorific value of the ration received by the control group), and hypercalorific (130% calorific value) nutrition. Four stages were distinguished in the development of the pathologic process under a chronic action of NDEA: I-alternative, II-alternative-proliferative, III--proliferative-tumorigenic, and IV--the stage of malignant growth. No matter what character of nutrition was, continuous NDEA administration induced the development of neoplasms in the liver 120 days after the commencement of the injections. The frequency of tumorigenesis rose significantly when NDEA was injected in the presence of hypo- or hypercalorific rations.

ABSTRACT

The paper is devoted to a very important problem of immune mechanisms participation in the origination and maintenance of the inflammatory processes in kidneys and urinary ducts. The results from the study of lymphocyte subpopulations, making use of monoclonal antibodies in patients with clinical-laboratory data about chronic pyelonephritis without chronic renal insufficiency, as compared with healthy controls, are reported. Significantly reduced total T-lymphocyte (OKT1+) were established as well as T-helpers lymphocytes (OKT4+) and increased number of monocytes (OKM5+). The values are presented as weighted geometrical mean. A likely interpretation of those data is rather difficult at the present stage.

ABSTRACT

A preliminary communication is presented about the results, obtained from aldosterone determination via the Adrenoprobe. The method is stressed to deserve attention since it is rapid, easy to perform and the results are obtained immediately after the investigation. On the other hand, the discrepancies between the results in some patients, obtained radioimmunologically and via the Adrenoprobe, revealed that further parallel investigations would be necessary (in order to obtain more data on the accuracy of aldosterone determination via the Adrenoprobe.

ABSTRACT

A total of 226 patients with exacerbated chronic pyelonephritis were studied and the effect of 10-day antibacterial course--followed up. In 178 cases the treatment was consistent with the drug susceptibility of urine microflora and in 48, it was carried out in the absence of such susceptibility. The susceptible strains were affected in a considerably higher percentage (64.60) than the nonsusceptible (41.67). The chronic renal insufficiency (ChRI) has been a factor restricting the effectiveness of the antibacterial agents. Out of III affected patients 24 (21.62%) were with ChRI, whereas they were 38 (46.34%) from not-affected ones. It has been concluded that the treatment of chronic exacerbated pyelonephritis should individually be carried out with a dynamic microbiological control.

ABSTRACT

The authors carried out morphological and morphometric studies of the liver of rats under malnutrition and chronic aflatoxin intoxication for 2 and 7 months. Malnourished animals demonstrated atrophic alterations. Animals exposed to aflatoxin B1 manifested severe dystrophic and necrobiotic alterations which did not depend on the nutrition regimen. In rats administered aflatoxin, blastomic processes were identified only at the 7th month. Whatever the diet.

ABSTRACT

Forty patients with Fraley syndrome were examined via "radioisotopic method for sector investigation of renal function" and the patients were grouped into 5 groups according to the results obtained. It was stressed that via the method used in patients with Fraley syndrome, an effective control could be carried out of the urodynamic disturbances and their effect on the vitality of the respective nephron population; the information obtained objectivizes the pathological deviations hence modelling the therapeutic behaviour.

ABSTRACT

Changes of plasma renin activity (PRA) were studied in 45 patients with renovascular hypertension. Peripheral PRA was assayed by Serebovskaya's modification of Pickens' biological method; in 13 patients it was additionally assayed in blood samples taken from both renal veins. In some of the patients who were not surgically treated PRA was followed up over a period of 1 to 5 years. The interrelation between PRA and the sex and age of the patients, the duration and the severity of the disease, the clinical and the morphological type of renovascular hypertension, as well as uni- or bilateral involvement of the renal artery is discussed. PRA was increased during the early stage of renovascular hypertension, while later it became normal. PRA of renal vein blood samples, from the kidney with a constricted renal artery, reflects more exactly the dynamics of the changes in the pressor system of the kidney. The assay of PRA is of special importance in the evaluation of the indications for surgical treatment and of the effect of reconstructive surgery.

ABSTRACT

The results are reported from the observations on the activity of the semi-synthetic preparation beta-Methyl-Digoxin in 60 patients with chronic cardiac insufficiency. The conclusions are based on the data, obtained by a series of clinical and instrumental examinations, electro- and balistocardiography included, measurements of venous pressure, etc. The high efficiency and good tolerance of the preparation is stressed upon. It is stressed to be especially suitable for the treatment of patients with bradycardic form of chronic heart decompensation as well as in the treatment of cardiac cirrhosis.
