ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: What are the specific parameters of dental health that present with modifications in osteoporosis (OP)? Both OP and a decreased bone mass can affect dental health. A low mineral density may lead to the loss of dentures because the jaw is exposed to the effects of periodontitis and without strong sustainability the teeth may lose their stability. INTRODUCTION: We compared the values of the periodontal index (IP) with a T score for women presenting with OP at menopause and those without OP. We found that there is a relation between OP and the loss of bone mass at the oral-facial level. METHODS: The study included 87 patients, aged between 35 and 75 years. We correlated gums and IP with the T score for the two groups. RESULTS: We found a significant difference between the values of the IP index for the group with OP in comparison with the control group. Thus a correlation between OP and IP was confirmed. CONCLUSIONS: IP was statistically significantly higher in women at menopause with OP than those without OP. Gum retraction was significantly higher in women at menopause with OP than in the control group. There was thus a real correlation between bone mineral density (BMD) and IP, while between BMD and dental mobility we found no correlation.

ABSTRACT

Unilateral medullosclerosis associated with splanchnicosympathectomy was applied in 60 cases of severe essential arterial hypertension. In 21 patients this was associated with contralateral adrenalectomy. No deaths were recorded. The late results (2 to 20 years) varied in terms of the anatomoclinical stage of the disease when surgery was performed. Systolic pressures fell to 30-50 mm Hg, hypertensive oscillations disappeared, mean adrenalinaemia values decreased by 47.9% after unilateral medullosclerosis and slanchnicosympathectomy and by 72.2% after bilateral interventions in two stage. The constitutional hyperadrenergic psychosomatic background was modified and became normohypoadrenergic. There was no case of adrenocortical insufficiency, the secretion of corticoids being insured by activity of the hexose-6-mono-phosphate dehydrogenase shunt.

ABSTRACT

Gastrectomy with ulcer exclusion, associated to double ligature of the duodenal stump without infundation is a technique easy to perform in ulcers with difficult duodenum. This technique was successfully applied in 34 patients with sub-bulbar chronic duodenal ulcers (with norm- or hypoacidity), complicated by penetrating bilio-pancreatic callous lesions (one case of pancreatic fistula was recorded, that was treated with X-ray therapy). In another 10 patients with complicated ulcers (perforations - 5 cases, bleeding associated with perforation - 2 cases) the authors used the same technique. Two deaths were recorded: through generalized peritonitis in one case and through duodenal fistula, melena and peritonitis in another case.

ABSTRACT

Malignization of Crohn disease remains the most severe complication, both due to its intrinsic gravity and to the major complications that it may induce such as: peritonitis--following suppurations and perforation of the involved intestinal segment; intestinal sub-occlusion or mechano-inflammatory occlusion, either tumoral or chronic leading to stenosis of the intestine; hemorrhage. Malignization of Crohn disease was found in 53,84% of the cases (7 out of a total of 13 cases, between 1968 and 1974). This allows to conclude that Crohn disease can be considered as a pre-cancerous disease.
