ABSTRACT

The catalogue of the vascular epiphyte vegetation of Silencio sector (Paramillo National Natural Park) and buffer zone (Córdoba) is showed. Sampling was conducted in an area of0,1 ha, collecting all vascular epiphytes distributed in phorophytes with a DAP> 2,5 cm, in four sectors. Collections were performed in the Silencio sectors (PNNP), Tuis Tuis, Tuis Tuis Arriba and Alto Chibogadó (buffer zone) of the tropical rain forest (Bh -T) in Tierralta town. 2504 individuals were recorded as vascular epiphytes. The catalog includes 73 species in 41 genera and 18 families. The sector Tuis Tuis showed the greatest representation of species (33). The families with the highest representation corresponds to Araceae, Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae families. The Orchidaceae family had the highest diversity with 20 species and 15 genera. The most diverse genera were Anthurium with eight species, Guzmania with six species and Aechmea and Tillandsia with five species each one. Ferns are presented only in 6 % of the epiphytic plants. 39 new species records for the department of Córdoba-Colombia are reported, extending the range of distribution of this group of plants in the country.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Craniopharyngioma is a sellar region benign cyst It's frequency ranges from 1.2% to 4.6% of all brain tumors. OBJECTIVE: To carry out a clinical pathological correlation of craniopharyngioma among adults and describe the tumor's biological characteristics. METHODS: We included 115 craniopharyngiomas; 100 were adamantimomatous and 15 were papillary type. Patient's age range was 15-90 years (mean 52.5 yrs); 54 (47%) were males and 61 (53%) females. The most frequent location was the supraselar region in 49 (42.6%) of cases. Total exeresis was performed in 72 patients (62.6%) and partial exeresis in 43 (37.4%). RESULTS: We noted a recurrence among 50 patients (43%), of which 5/15 were papillary and 45/100 adamantinomatous. The mean patient age for recurrent tumors was 50.46+/-14.13yrs and 48.65+/-11.95 for non recurrent tumors. Thirteen patients died (11.3%). We observed a statistical correlation between recurrence, exeresis (p=0.014), and death (p=0.047). Follow-up was longer among females than males and in suprasellar tumor location, papillary type, external epithelium cysts and laxo stellate reticulum. CONCLUSIONS: However a good prognostic factor in craniopharyngiomas was observed in older female patients with complete exeresis, small tumors, external epithelium cysts, edematous stroma, inflammation, and absence of atypical cell and mitosis.

ABSTRACT

Mucus-secreting adenomas or acinar adenoma of the choroid plexus are very rare. We report the case of a 79-year-old male with a 3-year history of occipital headaches with vomiting, ataxia and cerebellar signs. He was first seen due to difficulty while walking. He was admitted to the hospital with significant tumor expansion and clinical deterioration. CT and MRI revealed obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to a large fourth ventricular cyst mass, which enhanced markedly on contrast administration. Pathological findings were consistent with an acinar choroid plexus adenoma. The tumor was attached to the ependymal lining and was strongly adhered to the walls and floor of the IV ventricle. Post-operative bleeding complicated partial removal of this tumor. The patient died 6 h after surgery.

ABSTRACT
