ABSTRACT

Solid tumors represent the most common type of cancer in humans and are classified into sarcomas, lymphomas, and carcinomas based on the originating cells. Among these, carcinomas, which arise from epithelial and glandular cells lining the body's tissues, are the most prevalent. Around the world, a significant increase in the incidence of solid tumors is observed during recent years. In this context, efforts to discover more effective cancer treatments have led to a deeper understanding of the tumor microenvironment (TME) and its components. Currently, the interactions between cancer cells and elements of the TME are being intensely investigated. Remarkable progress in research is noted, largely owing to the development of advanced in vitro models, such as tumor-on-a-chip models that assist in understanding and ultimately discovering new effective treatments for a specific type of cancer. The purpose of this article is to provide a review of the TME and cancer cell components, along with the advances on tumor-on-a-chip models designed to mimic tumors, offering a perspective on the current state of the art. Recent studies using this kind of microdevices that reproduce the TME have allowed a better understanding of the cancer and its treatments. Nevertheless, current applications of this technology present some limitations that must be overcome to achieve a broad application by researchers looking for a deeper knowledge of cancer and new strategies to improve current therapies.

ABSTRACT

The beef cattle industry has experienced a shift driven by a market demand for healthier meat, cost efficiency and environmental sustainability in recent years. Consequently, there has been a growing focus on the fatty acids content and functions of meat in cattle breeding programmes. Besides, a deeper understanding of the biological mechanisms influencing the expression of different phenotypes related to fatty acid profiles is crucial. In this study, we aimed to identify Single-Nucleotide Variants (SNV) and Insertion/Deletion (InDels) DNA variants in candidate genes related to fatty acid profiles described in genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic studies conducted in beef cattle breeds. Utilizing whole-genome re-sequencing data from Brazilian locally adapted bovine breeds, namely Caracu and Pantaneiro, we identified SNVs and InDels associated with 23,947 genes. From these, we identified 318 candidate genes related to fatty acid profiles that contain variants. Subsequently, we select only genes with SNVs and InDels in their promoter, 5' UTR and coding region. Through the gene-biological process network, approximately 19 genes were highlighted. Furthermore, considering the studied trait and a literature review, we selected the main transcription factors (TF). Functional analysis via gene-TF network allowed us to identify the 30 most likely candidate genes for meat fatty acid profile in cattle. LIPE, MFSD2A and SREBF1 genes were highlighted in networks due to their biological importance. Further dissection of these genes revealed 15 new variants found in promoter regions of Caracu and Pantaneiro sequences. The gene networks facilitated a better functional understanding of genes and TF, enabling the identification of variants potentially related to the expression of candidate genes for meat fatty acid profiles in cattle.

ABSTRACT

Background/objective: Many COVID-19 survivors, especially those who have been hospitalized, have been suffering numerous complications that limit their activities of daily living, although changes that persist 3 years after infection are still not known. We aimed to investigate the impact of long COVID on the Glittre-ADL test (TGlittre) 3 years after acute infection in men who needed hospitalization and explore whether the performance on the TGlittre is associated with impairments in lung function, muscle strength, physical function and quality of life (QoL). Methods: Cross-sectional study with 42 men with long COVID who took the TGlittre. They underwent pulmonary function tests and measurements of handgrip strength and quadriceps strength (QS). Additionally, they also completed the Saint George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) and Functional Independence Measure (FIM). Results: The mean age was 52 ± 10.6 years, while the mean time after diagnosis of COVID-19 was 37 ± 3.5 months. The mean TGlittre time was 3.3 (3.1-4.1) min, which was 10% greater than the time expected for normal individuals to complete it. The TGlittre time was correlated significantly with the QS (rs = -0.397, p = 0.009), pulmonary diffusion (rs = - 0.364, p = 0.017), FIM (rs = -0.364, p = 0.017) and the "activity" domain score of the SGRQ (rs = 0.327, p = 0.034). Conclusion: Functional capacity on exertion as measured by the TGlittre time is normal in most men with long COVID 3 years after hospitalization. However, this improvement in functional capacity does not seem to be reflected in muscle strength or QoL, requiring continued monitoring even after 3 years.

BACKGROUND: The burden of caring for patients who have survived COVID-19 will be enormous in the coming years, especially with respect to physical function. Physical function has been routinely assessed using the Post-COVID-19 Functional Status (PCFS) scale. AIM: This study built prediction models for the PCFS scale using sociodemographic data, clinical findings, lung function, and muscle strength. METHOD: Two hundred and one patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS) completed the PCFS scale to assess physical function. Their levels of general fatigue were also assessed using the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F) scale, handgrip strength (HGS), and spirometry. RESULTS: The number of participants who scored 0 (none), 1 (negligible), 2 (slight), 3 (moderate), and 4 (severe) on the PCFS scale was 25 (12%), 40 (20%), 39 (19%), 49 (24%), and 48 (24%), respectively. The PCFS scale was significantly correlated with the following variables: FACIT-F score (r = -0.424, P < 0.001), HGS (r = -0.339, P < 0.001), previous hospitalization (r = 0.226, P = 0.001), body mass index (r = 0.163, P = 0.021), and sex (r = -0.153, P = 0.030). The regression model with the highest coefficient of regression (R = 0.559) included the following variables: age, sex, body mass index, FACIT-F, HGS, and previous hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS: Worse general fatigue and HGS are associated with more severe physical function impairments in PCS patients. Furthermore, a history of prior hospitalization results in worse physical function. Thus, prediction models for the PCFS scale that incorporate objective measures enable a better assessment of the physical function of these patients, thus helping in the selection of candidates for a program of physical reconditioning.

ABSTRACT

Overfishing constitutes a major threat affecting marine fish population worldwide, including mullet species that have been exploited by fisheries during the reproductive migration in temperate and tropical latitudes for millennia. In the present study, we investigated the relationship of fishing intensity of mullet Mugil liza during its reproductive migration and the abundance of their juveniles in an essential nursery ground for the species in the southwest Atlantic Ocean. To carry out this analysis, we used a 23-year standardized long-term time series (1997-2019) of monthly abundance of M. liza juveniles, local/regional (water temperature, salinity, water transparency and river discharge) and global (ENSO) environmental factors, along with compilations of fishing landing data for the species. Generalized Additive Models (GAM) revealed the negative effect of fishing adult populations on the abundance of juveniles when they reach the marine surf-zone and after recruiting into the estuary. Our results reinforce the importance of adequate conservation and fishery regulation policies to prevent the species' stock from collapsing.

ABSTRACT

This summary addresses the use of reproduction technologies in swine farming, with an emphasis on artificial insemination (AI). Brazilian swine farming has been growing significantly and seeks new technologies to achieve high productive indices sustainably and competitively. Pigs present favorable characteristics such as high prolificacy, fertility, rapid growth, feed efficiency, and carcass yield, which has led to intensive development of the activity with advanced genetic selection. AI is widely employed to disseminate genetic material among different regions and farms. Several AI techniques are used in modern swine farming: intrauterine insemination (IUI) allows semen deposition in the uterine region, reducing costs; fixed-time insemination (FTAI) synchronizes estrus in various females, facilitating management and increasing efficiency; deep intrauterine insemination (DIUI) deposits semen in the uterine horns, obtaining better results; and cervical insemination (CI), a traditional technique widely used, although it may be more time-consuming and present higher reflux rates. The success of AI is related to knowledge of the reproductive cycle of sows, proper nutrition, and genetic and environmental factors. Semen quality is essential, requiring collection by trained professionals and evaluation of sperm motility and morphology. Although it is a consolidated technique, there are issues to be further explored to optimize its application, defining the exact moment for insemination, reducing reflux, and adopting effective protocols. AI is an essential tool for the growth of Brazilian swine farming, but it requires continuous studies to maximize its efficiency and results, considering the farm's production goal and the size of the enterprise to achieve high reproductive and productive indices.


Este resumo aborda o uso de tecnologias de reprodução na suinocultura, com ênfase na inseminação artificial (IA). A suinocultura brasileira vem crescendo significativamente e busca novas tecnologias para alcançar altos índices produtivos de maneira sustentável e competitiva. Os suínos apresentam características favoráveis, como alta prolificidade, fertilidade, rápido crescimento, eficiência alimentar e rendimento de carcaça, o que levou ao desenvolvimento intensivo da atividade com seleção genética avançada. A IA é amplamente empregada para disseminar material genético entre diferentes regiões e granjas. Diversas técnicas de IA são utilizadas na suinocultura moderna: a inseminação intrauterina (IAIU) permite a deposição do sêmen na região uterina, reduzindo custos; a inseminação em tempo fixo (IATF) sincroniza o estro em várias fêmeas, facilitando o manejo e aumentando a eficiência; a inseminação intrauterina profunda (IAUP) deposita o sêmen nos cornos uterinos, obtendo melhores resultados; e a inseminação cervical (IAC), técnica tradicional amplamente utilizada, embora possa ser mais demorada e apresentar maiores taxas de refluxo. O sucesso da IA estar relacionado ao conhecimento do ciclo reprodutivo das matrizes, à nutrição adequada e aos fatores genéticos e ambientais. A qualidade do sêmen é essencial, exigindo coleta por profissionais treinados e avaliação da motilidade e morfologia dos espermatozoides. Apesar de ser uma técnica consolidada, há questões a serem aprofundadas para otimizar sua aplicação, definindo o momento exato para a realização da inseminação, a redução do refluxo e adoção de protocolos eficazes. ABSTRACT

Butia capitata endocarp (BCE) is a biomass residue with the potential to produce a wide variety of bio-products. The processing of BCE in a sequential process of subcritical water hydrolysis (SWH) and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) was investigated to obtain fermentable sugars, platform chemicals, bio-oil, and biochar. The SWH was evaluated at 230 and 260 °C and solvent: feed mass ratios (R) of 10 and 20 for the production of fermentable sugars and platform chemicals. The solid residue from SWH was sequentially submitted to the HTL at 330 and 360 °C for bio-oil and biochar production. The results were analyzed by comparing the sequential (SWH/HTL) and individual (HTL only) processes. The highest yields of fermentable sugars (5.26 g/ 100 g BCE) were obtained for SWH at 260 °C and R-20 with higher contents of xylose (2.64 g/100 g BCE) and cellobiose (1.75 g/100 g BCE). The highest yields of platform chemicals (2.44 g/100 g BCE) were obtained for SWH at 260 °C and R-10 with higher contents of acetic acid (1.78 g/100 g BCE) and furfural (0.54 g/100 g BCE). The highest yield of bio-oil (25.30 g/100 g BCE) occurred in HTL individual process at 360 °C and R-20. Sequential process SWH/HTL showed a decrease in bio-oil yield but maintained a similar biochar yield compared to HTL, in addition to the production of fermentable sugars and platform chemicals.

Interval training (IT) is a very efficient method. We aimed to verify the chronic effects of IT with different intensities on hemodynamic, autonomic and cardiorespiratory variables in the elderly. Twenty-four physically active elderly men participated in the study and were randomized into three groups: Training Group A (TGA, n = 8), Training Group B (TGB, n = 8) and control group (CG, n = 8). The TGA and TGB groups performed 32 sessions (48 h interval). TGA presented 4 min (55 to 60% of HRmax) and 1 min (70 to 75% of HRmax). The TGB training groups performed the same protocol, but performed 4 min at 45 to 50% HRmax and 1 min at 60 to 65% HRmax. Both training groups performed each set six times, totaling 30 min per session. Assessments were performed pre (baseline) after the 16th and 32nd intervention session. The CG performed only assessments. Hemodynamic, autonomic and cardiorespiratory (estimated VO2max) variables were evaluated. There were no significant differences between protocols and times (p > 0.05). However, the effect size and percentage delta indicated positive clinical outcomes, indicating favorable responses of IT. IT may be a strategy to improve hemodynamic, autonomic and cardiorespiratory behavior in healthy elderly people.

ABSTRACT

The purpose was to determine the effect low-intensity training with blood flow restriction (LI-BFR) versus high-intensity aerobic training (HIT) on acute physiological and perceptual responses. The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, National Library of Medicine, Scopus, SPORTDiscus and Web of Science databases and the reference list of eligible studies were consulted to identify randomized experimental studies, published until July 4, 2022, that analyzed physiological or perceptual responses between LI-BFR versus HIT in healthy young individuals. Mean difference (MD) and standardized mean difference (SMD) were used as effect estimates and random effects models were applied in all analyses. Twelve studies were included in this review. During exercise sessions, HIT promoted higher values of heart rate (MD=28.9 bpm; p<0.00001; I 2 =79%), oxygen consumption (SMD=4.01; p<0.00001; I 2 =83%), ventilation (MD=48.03 l/min; p=0.0001; I 2 =97%), effort (SMD=1.54; p=0.003; I 2 =90%) and blood lactate (MD=3.85 mmol/L; p=0.002; I 2 =97%). Perception of pain/discomfort was lower in HIT (SMD=-1.71; p=0.04; I 2 =77.5%). In conclusion, LI-BFR promotes less pronounced physiological responses than HIT but with greater perception of pain.

ABSTRACT

Our purpose in this study was to analyze perceptual and cardiovascular responses in low-load resistance training (RT) sessions associated with a fixed non-elastic band compressed to the proximal region of the arms (p-BFR) versus a pneumatic cuff inflated to a pressure of 150 mmHg (t-BFR). Participants (16 healthy trained men) were randomly assigned to two conditions of low-load RT (20% one repetition maximum [1RM]) with BFR (p-BFR or t-BFR). In both conditions, the participants performed five exercises (4 sets/30-15-15-15) for the upper-limbs, but in one of the conditions, the exercises were performed with a p-BFR induced by a non-elastic band, while in the other, the exercises were performed with a t-BFR using a device with similar width. The devices used to generate the BFR had similar widths (5 cm). Brachial blood pressure (bBP) and heart rate (HR) were measured before, after each exercise and after the experimental session (5-, 10-, 15-, and 20 min post-session). Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and rating of pain perception (RPP) were reported after each exercise and 15 minutes post-session. HR increased during the training session in both conditions, with no differences between p-BFR and t-BFR. Neither intervention increased diastolic BP (DBP) during training, but there was a significant post-session reduction in DBP in the p-BFR, with no differences observed between conditions. There were no significant differences in RPE and RPP in the two training conditions, with both conditions associated with higher RPE and RPP at the end versus beginning of the experimental session. We conclude that when BFR device width and material are similar, low-load training with t-BFR and p-BFR promotes similar acute perceptual and cardiovascular responses in healthy trained men.

BACKGROUND: Although the number of new cases of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) has been drastically reduced worldwide, patients who demonstrate long-term symptoms need more attention from health systems, as these symptoms can negatively affect functionality and quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate muscle function and quality of life at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months in patients with post-acute COVID-19 syndrome and to assess their associations with general fatigue and lung function. METHODS: This observational and longitudinal study evaluated patients with post-acute COVID-19 syndrome. Participants were subjected to the following evaluations: Short Form-36; handgrip strength; Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue scale; and spirometry. RESULTS: Among the 350 participants who were evaluated in the third month, 74.6%, 61.4% and 45.4% reported general fatigue, dyspnoea and cough, respectively. In the comparisons between the third month and the sixth month, there were significant increases in Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue scale, pulmonary function and several Short Form-36 domains. In the comparisons between the sixth month and the ninth month, there was a significant increase only in the social functioning domain of the Short Form-36. In the comparisons between the ninth month and the twelfth month, there was an increase only in some Short Form-36 domains. Significant correlations were observed between the Short Form-36 domains with Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue scale, handgrip strength and pulmonary function. CONCLUSION: In patients with post-acute COVID-19 syndrome, there was a progressive improvement in quality of life, general fatigue and pulmonary function during the 12 months of follow-up, with this improvement being more pronounced in the first 6 months. There was a relationship between functionality and quality of life in these patients.

CONTEXT: Several studies have compared perceptual responses between resistance exercise with blood flow restriction and traditional resistance exercise (non-BFR). However, the results were contradictory. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the effect of RE+BFR versus non-BFR resistance exercise [low-load resistance exercise (LL-RE) or high-load resistance exercise (HL-RE)] on perceptual responses. DATA SOURCES: CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PubMed®, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science were searched through August 28, 2021, and again on August 25, 2022. STUDY SELECTION: Studies comparing the effect of RE+BFR versus non-BFR resistance exercise on rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and muscle pain/discomfort were considered. Meta-analyses were conducted using the random effects model. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 2. DATA EXTRACTION: All data were reviewed and extracted independently by 2 reviewers. Disagreements were resolved by a third reviewer. RESULTS: Thirty studies were included in this review. In a fixed repetition scheme, the RPE [standardized mean difference (SMD) = 1.04; P < 0.01] and discomfort (SMD = 1.10; P < 0.01) were higher in RE+BFR than in non-BFR LL-RE, but similar in sets to voluntary failure. There were no significant differences in RPE in the comparisons between RE+BFR and non-BFR HL-RE; after sensitivity analyses, it was found that the RPE was higher in non-BFR HL-RE in a fixed repetition scheme. In sets to voluntary failure, discomfort was higher in RE+BFR versus non-BFR HL-RE (SMD = 0.95; P < 0. 01); however, in a fixed scheme, the results were similar. CONCLUSION: In sets to voluntary failure, RPE is similar between RE+BFR and non-BFR exercise. In fixed repetition schemes, RE+BFR seems to promote higher RPE than non-BFR LL-RE and less than HL-RE. In sets to failure, discomfort appears to be similar between LL-RE with and without BFR; however, RE+BFR appears to promote greater discomfort than HL-RE. In fixed repetition schemes, the discomfort appears to be no different between RE+BFR and HL-RE, but is lower in non-BFR LL-RE.

PURPOSE: To investigate variations in the course of the superficial fibular nerve (SFN) and its branches-the medial dorsal cutaneous nerve (MDCN) and intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve (IDCN)-concerning the leg compartments by means of a meta-analysis supplemented with an original anatomical study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature survey was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Lilacs databases on October 14th, 2021, to obtain anatomical data, and the PRISMA statement was adopted as a methodological guideline. We used MetaXL software for data analysis. We classified the anatomical data into three location patterns: in Type 1, the SFN courses through the lateral compartment; in Type 2, the SFN courses through the anterior compartment; in Type 3, the MDCN courses through the anterior compartment and the IDCN courses in the lateral compartment. RESULTS: Twelve studies (n = 837 lower limbs) comprised the current review. The SFN location was normal (Type 1 variation) in 77% (95% CI 72.9-78.9) of the cases, while Type 2 had a pooled prevalence of 14.3% (95% CI 11.1-15.9). Type 3 was the less common course, with a prevalence of 8.7% (95% CI 5.9-9.7). We found differences among the geographical subgroups analyzed. CONCLUSIONS: The SFN courses through the lateral compartment of the leg most times, and the prevalence of this pattern varies significantly between the different geographical subgroups evaluated. These results are of great clinical and surgical relevance.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To review variations regarding the branching patterns of the superficial fibular nerve (SFN) concerning the deep fascia of leg and to the ankle joint level. METHODS: Searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Lilacs, and Web of Science databases on October 14th, 2021. We followed the PRISMA guidelines to report this review. Articles with data on SFN variations prevalence were included. The data were extracted and pooled into a meta-analysis. We also dissected 60 formalin-fixed Brazilian fetuses (n = 120 lower limbs). RESULTS: Twenty-five studies (n = 1272 lower limbs) comprised this review. Concerning the SFN branching at the deep fascia, Type 1 variation (in which the SFN pierces the fascia as a single nerve trunk) had a pooled prevalence of 86.4% (95% CI 84.5-88.2), while Type 2 had a pooled prevalence of 13.6% (95% CI 11.8-15.5). At the ankle joint level, Type 2 variation (in which the SFN branches off below the joint level) was the most common anatomical pattern, with a pooled prevalence of 78.7% (95% CI 74.5-82.7). CONCLUSION: Typically, the SFN branches off between its exit from the deep fascia and the ankle joint level. The SFN variations have great importance for surgeries, such as arthroscopies and fascia release surgeries, regional anesthesia, and clinical evaluation of SFN entrapment syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Dogs are the most common domestic reservoir of Leishmania infantum, making canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) a serious public health issue. Identifying new methodologies that can mimic lymphoid and myeloid competence in naturally infected dogs could lower costs and save time in preliminary screenings of potential immunotherapeutic agents and vaccines against CVL. For that, we established a cell-to-cell communication approach between lymphocytes and myeloid cells from healthy, asymptomatic (infected, without apparent clinical signs) and symptomatic (infected with apparent clinical signs) dogs. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from these dogs were used as source of CD4+, CD8+ T lymphocytes and macrophages, that were posteriorly infected with L. infantum GFP+ promastigotes (green fluorescent protein). Macrophages co-cultured with purified lymphocytes were tested for the ability to control cellular parasitism, and their microbicidal function by producing nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The kind of T cell response within the co-culture was also evaluated, by assessing their ability to produce interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and interleukin 4 (IL-4). The data suggests that T lymphocytes from symptomatic dogs are more prone to produce IL-4 than the ones from asymptomatic dogs. Macrophages from asymptomatic dogs also demonstrated a higher microbicidal potential, with increased levels of NO and ROS production, compared to symptomatic dogs, mainly in highly parasitized cells. Together, our results identify the ratio of IL-4/IFN-γ produced by CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, as well as, the ratio between parasite GFP signal/NO and ROS signal in macrophages as potential immunological biomarkers of failure and success of the screened agents. Our findings also propose a reliable methodology that can be used to follow the immune response in trials of potential drugs or vaccines targeting CVL.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: A variety of approaches have been proposed to prevent lower limb injuries in runners. However, the evidence for the effectiveness of interventions to reduce lower limb pain and injury after intensive running is very weak. OBJECTIVE: The authors performed a systematic review to investigate the effects of foot orthoses on pain and the prevention of lower limb injuries in runners. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The authors searched the MEDLINE/PubMed, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, Scielo, and Cochrane Central (from inception to February 2022) databases for randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effects of foot orthoses in runners. The authors then calculated mean differences and 95% confidence intervals from these trials. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 test. Furthermore, the authors compared the criteria between runners with foot orthoses and ones with no intervention (control group). EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: Twelve studies (5321 runners) met our review criteria. The control and the foot orthoses group sustained 721 (37%) and 238 (24%) injuries, respectively. Compared with the control group, the use of foot orthoses resulted in a significant reduction in lower limb injury risk (risk ratio = 0.6; 95% confidence interval, 0.5-0.7; P = .00001, I2 = 54%; 7 studies, N = 2983: moderate-quality evidence). Moreover, the foot orthoses group corresponded to a 40% reduction in the risk of developing lower limb injuries. CONCLUSIONS: The use of foot orthoses may help reduce the incidence of lower limb injuries and pain in runners.

ABSTRACT

This paper estimates the impact of the COVID-19 on air travel demand and emissions in Brazil, the largest aviation market in Latin America. Combining detailed flight data and data on combustion emission factors, we estimate the CO2 emissions of domestic flights. A Bayesian structural time-series model was used to estimate the impact of COVID-19 on daily trends of air travel demand and emissions. The COVID-19 caused a reduction of 68% in national passengers and 63% in total CO2 emissions compared to what would have occurred if the pandemic had not happened. Despite such a sharp drop, fuel efficiency decreased after the COVID-19 outbreak, and passenger demand recovered to 64.2% of pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2020. The fast recovery in domestic flights by December 2020 indicates that the emissions could soon return to pre-pandemic levels, demonstrating the challenges of reducing emissions in the aviation sector in the short term.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: to identify nursing interventions in rehabilitation, within the scope of functional respiratory reeducation, which allow a respiratory function improvement in people with respiratory disease. METHODS: systematic literature review using the MEDLINE database search, adopting the PICO mnemonic and the Joanna Briggs Institute's assessment of the level of evidence and methodological quality. The search for randomized controlled trials was carried out in June 2021 considering the period from 2015 to 2020, in English or Portuguese. RESULTS: a sample of nine randomized controlled trials with methodological quality was obtained which highlighted the use of positive expiratory pressure devices as an important component and intervention for respiratory functional reeducation. CONCLUSIONS: nursing interventions in rehabilitation with an emphasis on functional respiratory reeducation are essential, showing improvements in people's general health.

ABSTRACT

Species delimitation in herbaceous bamboos has been complex and, in some genera, a great part of its diversity has been confirmed only based on genetic information, as is the case of the genus Raddia. It includes nine species, all occurring in Brazil, but only R. portoi predominates in dry forests of the Northeast associated with the Caatinga phytogeographic domain. This species is morphologically close to R. angustifolia, which is known for a single location in the Atlantic Forest in Southern Bahia, and is considered to be threatened by extinction. Besides problems with taxonomic focus, actions for its conservation are complicated because it is not certain if it must be considered an independent species or included in the more widespread R. portoi. In this study, we used coalescent multispecies (MSC) theory approaches combined with genetic structure analyses in an attempt to delimit these two species. Different analyses were congruent and the species delimitation using MSC inferred distinct lineages supporting their recognition as two species. These results solved the taxonomic doubts and also showed the power of these approaches to delimit species as lineages, even in groups with weak morphological divergence and low genetic variability, and also impacting our knowledge for conservation purposes.
