ABSTRACT

Gated-SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging is a widely used technique indicated for assessment of patients with no clear diagnosis of ischemic heart disease. Early rest gated-SPECT myocardial perfusion study in patients with acute chest pain has high sensitivity and high negative predictive value for ruling out coronary disease. We report a case of a patient admitted for the study of her chest pain. She underwent a myocardial perfusion stress-rest whose interpretation could have been equivocal due to the clinical status of the patient during the injection of the radiotracer (AU)

ABSTRACT

[reaction in text] Catechols react chemoselectively, in the presence of either alcohols, 1,2-diols, or simple phenols, with tert-butyl propynoate and with methyl propynoate to give 2-Boc-ethylidene (Bocdene) and 2-Moc-ethylidene (Mocdene) acetals, respectively, in 96-100% yields within 30 min at room temperature, provided that 150 mol % of DMAP is added. Cleavage of these acetals with pyrrolidine readily takes place (at room temperature!) in 95-100% yields. By taking advantage of the features of Bocdene acetals, novel catecholamine-related phosphate mimetics have been prepared.

ABSTRACT

[reaction: see text] High stereoselectivities (up to 98% de) have been achieved for the Lewis acid-mediated cross-coupling reaction of dimethyl acetals to a chiral 1,3-thiazolidine-2-thione-derived titanium enolate. The reaction affords enantiopure anti alpha-methyl-beta-alkoxy carbonyl compounds in a wide range of acetals.

ABSTRACT

[reaction: see text]Comprehensive analysis of the enolization of alpha-silyloxyketones by Chx2BCl/R3N has allowed us to design stereoselective Chx2BCl-mediated aldol processes that afford syn or anti aldol products and to disclose a hypothesis that accounts for the subtle effects that determine their enolization.

ABSTRACT

[reaction: see text] 1,2-Diols react at rt with alkyl propynoates, in the presence of 4-dimethylaminopyridine, to give cyclic acetals which are quite stable to acid-catalyzed hydrolysis or methanolysis. 1,3-Diols and 1, 4-diols do not form acetals with alkyl propynoates under the same conditions. Deprotection is accomplished with bases (via elimination and addition/elimination steps).

ABSTRACT

[reaction: see text] A procedure for the conversion of azides to amines, which uses NaBH4 and catalytic amounts of tin(IV) 1,2-benzenedithiolate, is disclosed. Primary, secondary, tertiary, aromatic, and heteroaromatic azides are reduced in excellent yields under very mild conditions.

ABSTRACT

The same precursor-namely, (2R)-2-ethyl-4-penten-1-ol-was used to obtain fragments C9-C13 and C1-C8 of 1, the aglycon of Sch 38516 (which is active against Candida sp.) and fluvirucin B(1) (which is active against influenza A virus). The key steps of the synthesis were the aldol-like reaction between the two fragments and the macrolactamization of a 13-azidotridecanoic acid derivative (see scheme). MOM=methoxymethyl, Py=2-pyridyl.

ABSTRACT

In March of 1991, a disease that affected pregnant sows and caused a high mortality in unweaned piglets was detected in Spain. Based on the clinical signs observed, mystery swine disease, which had been described recently in Germany, Holland and Belgium, was suspected. From the samples obtained from the affected farm, a filtrable agent (0.22 micron) was isolated on cell culture. It produced cytopathic effects, its replication was intracytoplasmic, it was sensitive to chloroform, and cross-reacted with a Lelystad reference serum. When inoculated into pregnant sows, the agent produced inappetence for 2-4 days, without hyperthermia. One of the sows aborted at 100 days of gestation; the two others had delayed parturitions (days 115 and 116). There was a mixture of healthy piglets, mummified fetuses, stillbirths and weak piglets. Microscopic examination of the lungs of healthy piglets killed at 8 and 12 days of life revealed the presence of interstitial pneumonia. The sera from the three sows at 39 days after infection cross-reacted with the Lelystad virus (titres > or = 1/640), whereas pre-inoculation sera did not recognize it (titres < or = 1/10). This is the first report from Spain of the isolation of an agent (antigenically related to the Lelystad virus), capable of reproducing the disease previously designated as mystery swine disease.
