ABSTRACT
The content of polyamines in cadaveric bone marrow was measured before and after cryopreservation. The content of some polyamines was found to depend on the morphologic and functional preservation of bone marrow elements. It is concluded that the content of some polyamines may serve as criterion of cell destruction and proliferative potencies of bone marrow.

Content of polyamines and some patterns of metabolism related to their synthesis and catabolism were studied in blood of patients with chronic myeloleukemia and chronic lympholeukemia. Free polyamines as well as activity of diamine oxidase were distinctly increased in blood, while concentration of total diamino acids was simultaneously decreased in blood serum of the patients as compared with that of healthy persons. Specific type of the quantitative alterations was responsible for efficiency of chemotherapy in these patients.

Polyamines levels were studied in various tissue specimens obtained from high-leukemia AKR mice aged 12 months and less. Organ tissues of leukemic animals revealed increased levels of polyamines and changes in their profile. In symptomatic mice, this was matched by relevant morphologic changes. It is inferred that putrescine is a marker of latent leukemia development.

The authors reported the results of retrospective analysis of the level of polyamines in urine and the duration of clinicohematological remission in 25 AL children aged 3 to 14. Of this number 23 patients suffered from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, 2--from acute myeloblastic leukemia. Direct correlation between polyamine changes during a course of chemotherapy and the duration of remission was established. Longer duration was observed in the patients in whom a 2-fold rise of the level of all polyamines, especially spermidine, followed the administration of a cytostatic within the first 24-72 h. On the discontinuation of therapy a certain decrease in polyamine excretion with urine was observed in these children as compared to the level determined on their admission to hospital.

Excretion of spermine, spermidine and putrescine with urine was studied in 38 patients (21-79 years old) with thermic burns of various degree. Certain differences were detected in excretion of the polyamines with urine depending on severity, step and outcome of the disease. In the course of the disease both low and extremely high level of the polyamines, found in urine during thermic shock, were unfavourable prognostically.

A fraction content of free and conjugated polyamines was studied in whole blood of 70 practically healthy persons. Spermine and spermidine were mainly found among the polyamines with some quantitative predominance of the latter. Putrescine was not observed in blood or its amount was not detected by means of spectrophotometry. The data obtained suggest that the free and conjugated polyamines should be studied simultaneously.

The levels of T- and B-lymphocytes were assayed and their functional activity studied in 23 patients with primary cancer and 21 cases of alveococcosis of liver. The lowered levels of T-lymphocytes in both groups and the decreased C3-fraction of B-lymphocytes in primary cancer of the liver were observed. Considerable changes in serum immunoglobulin system, i. e. an increased level of all immunoglobulins (G, A and M), are reported.
