ABSTRACT

As many as 2247 patients with different clinical forms of diphtheria were examined. Antidiphtheric serum (ADS) was administered in 1556 children, the dosage being determined by condition of the patient. Serum sickness developed at day 7 to 9 in 24 (1.5%); 10 patients were found to run a mild course, 14--moderately severe. 6 patients had allergic reactions: 3--to antibiotic (penicillin), urticaria type, 1--to pertussoid-tetanic anatoxin, 2 had pollinosis-type reaction. Thus, serum sickness has practical value, which fact requires a detailed allergic history together with skin tests to be performed before the administration of ADS.

ABSTRACT

Described in the article are particular characteristics of allergoses encountered in patients with different forms of diphtheria. Allergic reactions were found to be presenting as anaphylactic shock urticaria and Quincke's edema type. The studies made showed that allergic reactions in treatment of patients with diphtherial infection develop on relatively rare occasions but they should be examined in a more thorough way.

ABSTRACT

The paper contains a review of relevant literature highlighting particular features of diphtheria epidemic in Ukraine. An assessment is given of potentialities of vaccination in diphtheria. It is shown that inadequate vaccination is not the only factor responsible for the epidemic. Some specificities are described of the immune response from the present-day standpoint together with the connection of this process with the system of histocompatibility. Manifestations of the immune response to the vaccination carried out are discussed, and in accordance with this principles and lines of inquiry are formulated according to modern idea of the subject.

ABSTRACT

The paper is concerned with the history of computerization in medicine, specifically in infectology. The authors have analyzed stages of development of computerization, expounding features and disadvantages thereof. The necessity to use computer diagnosis in an infectology setting is substantiated, especially so in diagnosis of viral hepatitis. General principles are characterized underlying the foundation of design of the computer programme for the diagnosis to be made of different clinical varieties of the course of acute viral hepatitides.

ABSTRACT

Of 262 patients referred with suspicion of diphtheria the diagnosis was confirmed in 145 (55.3%). Clinico-epidemiological data indicate that the severity of diphtheria course, the tendency of increase of its incidence at the UkrSSR territory and in the USSR emphasize that early diagnosis and adequate treatment are of prime importance. To achieve this not only epidemiologists and infectionists but also cardiologists, otolaryngologists and general practitioners should actively participate in management of these patients. The authors pay special attention to carriers of pathogenic strains of diphtheria corynebacteria because their growth in these conditions may be a marker of epidemiological hazard.

ABSTRACT

The authors studied the efficacy of using USSR-made adsorbent "Enterosgel" in the complex treatment of viral hepatitis. A scheme of employment of the drug is described. Recommendations on the doses and duration of treatment are given. It was established that the efficacy of "Enterosgel" treatment was optimal in patients with intoxication syndrome due to hepatic insufficiency, cholestasis with marked skin pruritus and allergic manifestations. Use of the named drug permits to restrict the employment of other agents that effected favourably the course and outcome of viral hepatitis.

ABSTRACT

An analysis of clinical data revealed a correlation between the relative frequency of joint appearance of changed signs and their functional relationship which is in contradiction to the value of the coefficient of stochastic link. Using an apparatus of the information theory the authors introduce a quantitative value of functional relationship between signs of the disease. A method is proposed of evaluation of the functional relationship between signs, the basis of which is calculation of the quantity of information contained in reports on the joint appearance of these signs in the disease. A formula was designed for calculating the coefficient of functional relationship. This method was approved on indices characterizing involvement of the pancreas in viral hepatitis.
