ABSTRACT

Little is known about Cryptosporidium and Giardia in biogas waste and humans in Vietnam. There is a potential risk of infections during or after using the biogas system. The detected protozoan genotypes are zoonotic pathogens, and contamination of vegetables may relay through runoff to the surface waters and soil. The objective of this study was to understand the role of the environment in the epidemiology of human infections in Bac Giang province, Vietnam, with a focus on investigating the presence of Cryptosporidium spp. genotypes and Giardia assemblages among 239 environmental samples and 94 faecal samples of biogas users. PCR and sequencing analysis were used to identify the occurrence and genotypes of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in these samples. Results showed that 13/333 (3.9 %) and 9/333 (2.7 %) samples were positive for Cryptosporidium oocyst and Giardia cysts, respectively. Characterization revealed the presence of Cryptosporidium scrofarum, C. suis, C. meleagridis, C. bailey and Giardia intestinalis assemblage A and E. C. scrofarum and Giardia assemblage E were identified for the first time in humans in Bac Giang. The current information from the above investigations will be valuable for protozoan source tracking and control interventions against Cryptosporidium and Giardia infection associated with biogas wastes in Vietnam.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The newborn and child death associated with inadequate post-natal health checks continued to be a significant issue across the world. This study aimed to assess the socioeconomic inequalities in post-natal health checks for the newborn in Vietnam in 2014. METHODS: We used the secondary data from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey in 2014. We included women aged 15-49 years who had a live birth within two years of the time of the interview. We estimated the concentration index to measure socioeconomic inequalities post-natal health checks for the newborn. We conducted multiple logistic regression analysis to identify factors associated with post-natal health checks for the newborn. RESULTS: Overall, the proportion of post-natal health checks for the newborn in Vietnam was 89.1%. The concentration index of post-natal health checks for the newborn was positive at 0.06. It indicated that the newborns in the rich households were more likely to get post-natal health checks as compared to in the poor households. The common factors significantly associated with the higher percentage of post-natal health checks for the newborn were women belonging to the Kinh and Hoa ethnic, higher education, and wealthier groups. CONCLUSION: Socioeconomic inequalities in post-natal health checks for the newborn in Vietnam were not strong, but it still existed. Thus, we recommended that policy efforts to increase access to post-natal health services for poor women. In addition, there is a need to improve access to post-natal health services for women belonging to minor ethnic group and low education.

ABSTRACT

Despite considerable variations in the use of antenatal care (ANC) services in Vietnam, limited information is available on socioeconomic inequalities concerning the use of ANC services. This study aimed to assess the trends and changes in socioeconomic inequalities in the use of ANC services by women aged 15 to 49 years in Vietnam from 2006 to 2014. We used data from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey conducted in 2006, 2011, and 2014. The percentage of women who received ANC services increased significantly from 26.5% in 2006 to 42.7% in 2011 and reached 56.6% in 2014. We found a decreasing trend in the concentration indices of the use of ANC services from 0.36 in 2006 to 0.19 in 2014. The common factors significantly associated with the higher percentage of the use of ANC services in 2006, 2011, and 2014 were women belonging to the Kinh and Hoa ethnic groups and belonging to wealthier groups. Our study showed a reduction in socioeconomic inequality in the use of ANC services between 2004 and 2014. However, significant inequalities still exist in the use of ANC services based on women's education, ethnicity, and economic status.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the potential of removing ammonium ([Formula: see text]) from aqueous solutions using corncob based on modified biochar (MBCC) in the fixed-bed column. Corncob biochar was soaked in a mixture of HNO3 6.0 M and NaOH 0.3 M to prepare active binding sites for ammonium removal. The effect of initial ammonium concentrations (10-40 mg/L), flow rates (1-9 mL/min) and MBCC fixed-bed heights (8-24 cm) on the breakthrough characteristics of the adsorption system were studied. The results showed that the highest adsorption capacity of fix-bed column, the breakthrough time and value of Ct/Co were 12.83 mg/g, 480 min and 0.862 ± 0.025 at 10 mg/L of initial ammonium concentration, 8 cm of MBCC fixed-bed height and 3 mL/min of flow rate, respectively. The breakthrough curve model in this study also indicated that all Yoon-Nelson, Thomas and Adam-Bohart models well fit with the experimental data with a high R2. The results also proved that MBCC can be used as a potential adsorbent for eliminating [Formula: see text] in the fixed-bed column. The saturated MBCC was also regenerated and reused consecutively for four cycles. The usage of mixture of NaOH and NaCl in recovering MBCC was better than NaCl only.

ABSTRACT

Ammonium pollution in groundwater and surface water is of major concern in many parts of the world due to the danger it poses to the environment and people's health. This study focuses on the development of a low cost adsorbent, specifically a modified biochar prepared from corncob. Evaluated here is the efficiency of this new material for removing ammonium from synthetic water (ammonium concentration from 10 to 100mg/L). The characteristics of the modified biochar were determined by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) test, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that ammonium adsorption on modified biochar strongly depended on pH. Adsorption kinetics of NH4+-N using modified biochar followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Both Langmuir and Sips adsorption isotherm models could simulate well the adsorption behavior of ammonium on modificated biochar. The highest adsorption capacity of 22.6mg NH4+-N/g modified biochar was obtained when the biochar was modified by soaking it in HNO3 6M and NaOH 0.3M for 8h and 24h, respectively. The high adsorption capacity of the modified biochar suggested that it is a promising adsorbent for NH4+-N remediation from water.
