ABSTRACT

A total of 1067 patients aged from 15 to 82 years who suffered from deforming bronchitis were examined. All the patients underwent X-ray examination, forced external respiration test, bronchofibroscopy with biopsy and radionuclide study of the lungs whose results were the basis for establishing a diagnosis of deforming bronchitis with an accuracy of 99.8%. Therapeutical bronchoscopies made in patients with deforming bronchitis were an effective therapeutical tool in 96.9-98.1% of cases.

ABSTRACT

Endoscopic examination of the bronchial tree and investigation of pulmonary mucociliary transport by aerosol scintigraphy of the lungs were carried out in 40 patients and 10 controls. All the patients had exacerbation of chronic obstructive bronchitis. 20 of these were smokers and 20 nonsmokers. Healthy controls without lung pathology have never smoked. The findings indicate that in chronic sufferers with bronchitis and long history of smoking the rate of mucociliary clearance is reduced to 44% of the normal value and to 65% of the value for nonsmoking patients. This evidence is confirmed by the data obtained on the involvement of bronchial mucosa epithelium and at histologic examination of biopsy specimens.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents the results of examination of children with primary ciliary dyskinesia. It has been found that ENT pathologies form an obligate characteristic of this lesion. Primary ciliary dyskinesia can be reliably diagnosed with the aid special examination methods. Adequate treatment by an ENT doctor and a pulmonologist yields good results.

ABSTRACT

Bronchofibroscopy was conducted in 9,254 patients, foreign bodies aspired long ago were found in 12 of them. All foreign bodies were radiolucent. During bronchoscopy foreign bodies were detected on the right side in 7 and on the left side in 5 patients. All were surrounded by an inflammatory swelling and covered with granulations. The foreign bodies had remained in the bronchi for 4 months to 27 years. After removal of the foreign bodies all patients were subjected to therapeutic bronchoscopy until full abatement of the inflammatory process in the bronchi.

ABSTRACT

A trial was designed to study shifts in various mechanisms of external respiration (ER) distress in chronic obstructive bronchitis by type of respiration insufficiency (RI). Combined clinicoroentgenological, spirographic, endoscopic and radionuclide (133Xe radiopneumography and 99Tc scintigraphy) examinations were conducted in 66 patients (41 males and 25 females aged 20-60 with 2-17-year history of chronic obstructive bronchitis) versus 30 healthy controls. ER parameters assessed in 4 groups of patients (with-out resting RI, with obstructive and mixed RI variants) by+radiopneugraphy and scintigraphy were found abnormal for either lung and both lungs as a whole. The abnormalities recorded correlated with RI variant. The following parameters appeared most informative in studying ER in the bronchitis patients with radionuclide techniques: the volume of ventilated alveoli, respiratory capacity, total and functional residual lung capacity, index ventilation/blood flow, capillary blood flow, time of half elimination of Xe from the alveoli and vascular bed. The above parameters change for the worse with progressive deterioration of external respiration.

ABSTRACT

Structural analysis of scintigraphic images was used for assessment of the severity of lung affection in 57 patients with mild, average and severe types of asthma and chronic pneumonia. The results of common methods and microstructural analysis were compared. The use of the latter made it possible to reveal structures which were typical of a various degree of severity in chronic diseases.

ABSTRACT

Comprehensive investigation including panoramic chest x-ray, tomography, bronchofibroscopy with biopsy, bronchography, and comprehensive radionuclide investigation, were used in 233 patients with deforming bronchitis. All the patients were divided into 3 groups. Endoscopic findings corresponded to the results of comprehensive radionuclide investigation in all the groups.

ABSTRACT

The authors presented their first experience of radionuclide assessment of the nasal mucosal transport (NMT) in 39 patients with chronic bronchopulmonary pathology (14 adults and 25 children) to detect patients among them with suspected syndrome of primary ciliary dyskinesia (SPCD). In 18 patients the test was positive excluding SPCD as a cause of a chronic inflammatory pulmonary process. In 21 patients NMT was absent, 2 of these patients had Kartagener's triad serving as a kind of model confirming the data on NMT. The authors proposed the method as a screening test due to its non-invasiveness and simplicity in patients with chronic inflammatory pulmonary diseases in order to detect among them patients with suspected SPCD for further examination using invasive methods.

ABSTRACT

The authors were first in the Soviet Union to use a special multidetector system KEFUT BI 1200 produced by the Finnish company MEDIVALMET for examination of the regional lung functions in 110 patients suffering from different lung lesions. The article describes the merits of this system and procedure of patients' examining.
