ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: MicroRNA-1 (miR-1) is a tumour suppressor that can inhibit cell proliferation and invasion in several cancer types. In addition, miR-1 was found to be associated with drug sensitivity. Circulating miRNAs have been proven to be potential biomarkers with predictive and prognostic value. However, studies of miR-1 expression in the serum of breast cancer (BC) patients are relatively scarce, especially in patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). METHODS: Serum samples from 80 patients were collected before chemotherapy, and RT-PCR was performed to detect the serum expression of miR-1. The correlation between miR-1 expression in serum and clinicopathological factors, including pathological complete response (pCR), was analyzed by the chi-squared test and logistic regression. KEGG and GSEA analysis were also performed to determine the biological processes and signalling pathways involved. RESULTS: The miR-1 high group included more patients who achieved a pCR than did the miR-1 low group (p < 0.001). Higher serum miR-1 levels showed a strong correlation with decreased ER (R = 0.368, p < 0.001) and PR (R = 0.238, p = 0.033) levels. The univariate model of miR-1 for predicting pCR achieved an AUC of 0.705 according to the ROC curve. According to the interaction analysis, miR-1 interacted with Ki67 to predict the NAC response. According to the Kaplan-Meier plot, a high serum miR-1 level was related to better disease-free survival (DFS) in the NAC cohort. KEGG analysis and GSEA results indicated that miR-1 may be related to the PPAR signalling pathway and glycolysis. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, our data suggested that miR-1 could be a potential biomarker for pCR and survival outcomes in patients with BC treated with NAC.

ABSTRACT

Colibacillosis caused by Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC), including peritonitis, respiratory tract inflammation and ovaritis, is recognized as one of the most common and economically destructive bacterial diseases in poultry worldwide. In this study, the characteristics and inhibitory potential of phages were investigated by double-layer plate method, transmission electron microscopy, whole genome sequencing, bioinformatics analysis and animal experiments. The results showed that phages C-3 and G21-7 isolated from sewage around goose farms infected multiple O serogroups (O1, O2, O18, O78, O157, O26, O145, O178, O103 and O104) Escherichia coli (E.coli) with a multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 10 and 1, respectively. According to the one-step growth curve, the incubation time of both bacteriophage C-3 and G21-7 was 10 min. Sensitivity tests confirmed that C-3 and G21-6 are stable at 4 to 50 °C and pH in the range of 4 to 11. Based on morphological and phylogenetic analysis, phages C-3 and G21-7 belong to Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) phage species of the genus Saphexavirus of Herelleviridae family. According to genomic analysis, phage C-3 and G21-7 were 58,097 bp and 57,339 bp in size, respectively, with G+C content of 39.91% and 39.99%, encoding proteins of 97 CDS (105 to 3,993 bp) and 96 CDS (105 to 3,993 bp), and both contained 2 tRNAs. Both phages contained two tail proteins and holin-endolysin system coding genes, and neither carried resistance genes nor virulence factors. Phage mixture has a good safety profile and has shown good survival probability and feed efficiency in both treatment and prophylaxis experiments with one-day-old goslings. These results suggest that phage C-3 and G21-7 can be used as potential antimicrobials for the prevention and treatment of APEC.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The cardiotoxicity related to 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) in cancer patients has garnered widespread attention. The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) has recently been identified as a novel predictive marker for the development of cardiovascular illnesses in individuals without pre-existing health conditions. However, it remains unclear whether the levels of SII are linked to cardiotoxicity related to 5-FU. This retrospective study aims to fill this knowledge gap by examining the correlation between SII and cardiotoxicity related to 5-FU in a colorectal cancer cohort. METHODS: The study comprised colorectal cancer patients who received 5-FU-based chemotherapy at the affiliated cancer hospital of Guizhou Medical University between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2020. After adjustment for confounders and stratification by tertiles of the interactive factor, linear regression analyses, curve fitting and threshold effect analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Of the 754 patients included final analysis, approximately 21% (n = 156) of them ultimately experienced cardiotoxicity related to 5-FU. Monocytes (M) was found as an influential element in the interaction between SII and cardiotoxicity related to 5-FU. In the low tertile of M (T1: M ≤ 0.38 × 109/L), increasing log SII was positively correlated with cardiotoxicity related to 5-FU (Odds Ratio [OR], 8.04; 95% confidence interval [95%CI], 1.68 to 38.56). However, a curvilinear relationship between log SII and cardiotoxicity was observed in the middle tertile of M (T2: 0.38 < M ≤ 0.52 × 109/L). An increase in log SII above 1.37 was shown to be associated with a decreased risk of cardiotoxicity (OR, 0.14; 95%CI, 0.02 to 0.88), indicating a threshold effect. In the high tertile of M (T3: M > 0.52 × 109/L), there was a tendency towards a negative linear correlation between the log SII and cardiotoxicity was observed (OR, 0.85; 95%CI, 0.37 to 1.98). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that SII may serve as a potential biomarker for predicting cardiotoxicity related to 5-FU in colorectal cancer patients. SII is an independent risk factor for cardiotoxicity related to 5-FU with low monocytes levels (T1). Conversely, in the middle monocytes levels (T2), SII is a protective factor for cardiotoxicity related to 5-FU but with a threshold effect.

ABSTRACT

Membranous nephropathy (MN) is a rare complication that can occur after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). MN patients may develop nephrotic syndrome or even kidney failure, which greatly affects their quality of life and prognosis. However, current knowledge regarding MN after allo-HSCT is limited. Thus, a multicenter nested case‒control study was conducted. Patients who had been diagnosed with MN after allo-HSCT were retrospectively identified at 8 HSCT centers. A total of 51 patients with MN after allo-HSCT were included. The median age of MN patients after allo-HSCT was 38 years, and the median duration from HSCT to MN was 18 months. The use of HLA-matched donors (P = 0.0102) and peripheral blood as the graft source (P = 0.0060) were identified as independent predisposing risk factors for the onset of MN after allo-HSCT. Compared to those in the control group, the incidence of extensive chronic graft-versus-host disease was greater in the MN patients (P = 0.0002). A total of 31 patients developed nephrotic syndrome. Patients receiving combination treatments of corticosteroids and immunosuppressants appeared to have better outcomes. In conclusion, MN is a rare but occasionally severe complication following HSCT and may require active treatment.

We have developed a highly regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselective Cu-catalyzed desymmetrization of inert meso-diethers using Grignard reagents. Moreover, previous inaccessible sterically hindered organometallic reagents are realized in the reaction with broad secondary alkyl Grignard reagents. Finally, detailed control experiments and density functional theory calculations revealed the desymmetrization of meso-diethers exploits a direct anti-SN2' pathway, in the absence of an in situ-generated allyl bromine intermediate. The following oxidative addition is the crucial rate-determining and enantioselectivity-determining step.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the diagnostic value of HR-VWI in intracranial arterial stenosis and occlusion and compare it with DSA. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of clinical data of 59 patients with intracranial arterial stenosis in our hospital was conducted to compare the diagnostic results of the two methods for different degrees of intracranial stenosis and various morphological plaques. RESULTS: The diagnosis of stenosis and occlusion by both methods showed no significant difference (p > 0.05). Comparison of plaque morphology detected by HR-VWI with pathological examination results showed no significant difference (p > 0.05); however, there was a significant difference between plaque morphology detected by DSA and pathological examination results (p < 0.05). Additionally, there was a significant difference between plaque morphology detected by HR-VWI and DSA (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: HR-VWI technique is comparable to DSA technique in diagnosing intracranial arterial stenosis and occlusion, but it is superior to DSA in plaque morphology diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Infertility, a worldwide reproductive health concern, impacts approximately one in five couples. Male infertility, stemming from spermatogenic dysfunction and reduced sperm quality, stands as a primary factor contributing to infertility. Given the global decrease in male fertility linked to environmental factors like the greenhouse effect, it is crucial to develop a comprehensive understanding of how increased temperatures impact both the quantity and quality of sperm. In this study, we utilized Pandora-seq technology to detect the small non-coding RNAs (sncRNAs) expression profile in the testicular tissue of heat-stressed mice. The investigation explores the dynamic shifts in sncRNAs within the mouse testis under heat stress, including miRNAs, tsRNAs, piRNAs, rsRNAs and other sncRNAs. Furthermore, we successfully identified differentially expressed sncRNAs in testicular tissues before and after heat stress. Subsequently, we conducted functional enrichment analysis on the potential predicted target genes of differentially expressed miRNAs and tsRNAs. These datasets will constitute a valuable foundational resource for further investigations into the decline in male reproductive capacity triggered by heat stress.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), with its clinical ad-vantages of less trauma and faster recovery, has become the primary treatment for choledocholithiasis. AIM: To investigate the effects of different ERCP procedures on the sphincter of Oddi. METHODS: The clinical data of 91 patients who underwent ERCP at Yixing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine between February 2018 and February 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were divided into endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST, n = 24) and endoscopic papillary balloon dilation (EPBD, n = 67) groups. The duration of operation, pancreatic development, pancreatic sphincterotomy, intubation difficulties, stone recurrence, and incidence of reflux cholangitis and cholecystitis were statistically analyzed in patients with a history of choledocholithiasis, pancreatitis, and Oddi sphincter dysfunction in the EST and EPBD groups. RESULTS: Differences in hypertension, diabetes, increased bilirubin, small diameter of the common bile duct, or ampullary diverticulum between the two groups were not significant. Statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups concerning sex and age (< 60 years). Patients with a history of choledocholithiasis, pancreatitis, and Oddi sphincter dysfunction were higher in the EST group than in the EPBD group. The number of cases of pancreatic development, pancreatic duct sphincterotomy, and difficult intubation were higher in the EST group than in the EPBD group. The number of Oddi's sphincter manometries, ERCP surgical outcomes, and guidewires entering the pancreatic duct several times in EST group were lower than those in the EPBD group. The numbers of stone recurrences, reflux cholangitis, and cholecystitis were higher in the EST group than in the EPBD group. CONCLUSION: In summary, common bile duct stones, pancreatitis history, and multiple guided wire introductions into the pancreatic duct are independent risk factors for EST and EPBD. Based on this evidence, this study can provide actionable insights for clinicians and researchers.

BACKGROUND: Insulin injection is the basic daily drug treatment for diabetic patients. AIM: To evaluate the comparative impacts of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). METHODS: Based on the treatment modality received, the patients were allocated into two cohorts: The CSII group and the multiple daily injections (MDI) group, with each cohort comprising 210 patients. Comparative assessments were made regarding serum levels of serum-secreted frizzled-related protein 5, homocysteine, and C1q/TNF-related protein 9. Furthermore, outcomes such as fasting plasma glucose, 2-hour postprandial glucose levels, pain assessment scores, and the incidence of complications were evaluated post-treatment. RESULTS: The CSII group displayed notably lower fasting plasma glucose and 2-h postprandial glucose levels in comparison to the MDI group (P < 0.05). Subsequent analysis post-treatment unveiled a significantly higher percentage of patients reporting no pain in the CSII group (60.00%) in contrast to the MDI group (36.19%) (P < 0.05). Additionally, the CSII group exhibited a markedly reduced occurrence of fetal distress and premature rupture of membranes compared to the MDI group (P < 0.05). However, there were no significant variances observed in other pregnancy outcomes between the two groups (P > 0.05). A statistical analysis revealed a significant difference in the incidence of complications between the groups (χ 2 = 11.631, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: The utilization of CSII via an insulin pump, as opposed to MDI, can significantly enhance the management of insulin administration in patients with GDM by diversifying the sites of insulin delivery. This approach not only promotes optimal glycemic control but also regulates metabolic factors linked to blood sugar, reducing the likelihood of adverse pregnancy outcomes and complications. The clinical relevance and importance of CSII in GDM management highlight its wide-ranging clinical usefulness.

Activated persulfate and hydrothermal treatment (HTT) are often employed to treat waste activated sludge, which can improve the efficiency of subsequent sludge treatment and change the distribution of pollutants in the sludge. However, the impact of sludge solid content and temperature on the occurrence and aging of microplastics (MPs) during HTT remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of persulfate-HTT (SPS-HTT) co-treatment on the migration, occurrence, and aging of MPs in sludge with different solid contents (2% and 5% solid content). The results indicated that SPS-HTT co-treatment triggers both the disruption of sludge flocs and the melting deformation of MPs at high temperatures, leading to variations in the increasing trend of MP concentration in the solid-liquid phase at different solid contents. 5% solid content sludge showed a weak release of MPs from the solid phase. The proportion of fiber MPs first increased and then decreased with increasing temperature, while no significant changes were observed in the color and type of MPs. Higher temperature and solid content induced the melting deformation of MPs, exacerbated the aging of polypropylene MPs, and resulted in rough surfaces, higher carbonyl index, and variations in crystallinity. Moreover, the correlation between the carbonyl index and aging indicators increased with increasing solid content. The MP-derived dissolved organic matter under HTT primarily comprised soluble microbial by-products and humic acid-like substances. These findings underscore the significance of sludge solid content in affecting the migration and aging of MPs during HTT, and offer novel insights into the application of HTT to MP management in sludge treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnostic value of D-dimer, platelet-lymphocyte rate (PLR) and CT signs for intestinal ischemia in patients with bowel obstruction. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and imaging data of 105 patients diagnosed with bowel obstruction, and performed univariate and multivariate analyses to determine the independent risk factors for intestinal ischemia in patients with bowel obstruction. Moreover, the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was plotted to examine the diagnostic value of D-dimer, PLR and CT signs in patients with bowel obstruction. Besides, Kappa tests were used to assess inter-observer agreement. RESULTS: We included 56 men (53%) and 49 women (47%) with mean age of 66.05 ± 16 years. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that D-dimer, PLR and two significant CT signs (i.e., increased unenhanced bowel-wall attenuation and mesenteric haziness) were independent risk factors for intestinal ischemia in patients with bowel obstruction. ROC analysis showed that the combined use of D-dimer, PLR and the said two CT signs had better performance than single indicators in predicting intestinal ischemia in patients with bowel obstruction. The area under the curve (AUC) of the joint model III was 0.925 [95%CI: 0.876-0.975], with a sensitivity of 79.2% [95CI%: 67.2-91.1] and a specificity of 91.2% [95%CI: 83.7-98.9]. CONCLUSION: The combined use of D-dimer, PLR and CT signs has high diagnostic value for intestinal ischemia in patients with bowel obstruction and will prompt surgical exploration to evaluate intestinal blood flow.

ABSTRACT

Liquid biopsy is a non-invasive diagnostic method that can reduce the risk of complications and offers exceptional benefits in the dynamic monitoring and acquisition of heterogeneous cell population information. Optical nanomaterials with excellent light absorption, luminescence, and photoelectrochemical properties have accelerated the development of liquid biopsy technologies. Owing to the unique size effect of optical nanomaterials, their improved optical properties enable them to exhibit good sensitivity and specificity for mitigating signal interference from various molecules in body fluids. Nanomaterials with biocompatible and optical sensing properties play a crucial role in advancing the maturity and diversification of liquid biopsy technologies. This article offers a comprehensive review of recent advanced liquid biopsy technologies that utilize novel biocompatible optical nanomaterials, including fluorescence, colorimetric, photoelectrochemical, and Raman broad-spectrum-based biosensors. We focused on liquid biopsy for the most significant early biomarkers in clinical medicine, and specifically reviewed reports on the effectiveness of optical nanosensing technology in the detection of real patient samples, which may provide basic evidence for the transition of optical nanosensing technology from engineering design to clinical practice. Furthermore, we introduced the integration of optical nanosensing-based liquid biopsy with modern devices, such as smartphones, to demonstrate the potential of the technology in portable clinical diagnosis.

Emerging evidence suggests that neurological and other post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 can persist beyond or develop following SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, the long-term trajectories of cognitive change after a COVID-19 infection remain unclear. Here we investigated cognitive changes over a period of 2.5 years among 1,245 individuals aged 60 years or older who survived infection with the original SARS-CoV-2 strain in Wuhan, China, and 358 uninfected spouses. We show that the overall incidence of cognitive impairment among older COVID-19 survivors was 19.1% at 2.5 years after infection and hospitalization, evaluated using the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status-40. Cognitive decline primarily manifested in individuals with severe COVID-19 during the initial year of infection, after which the rate of decline decelerated. Severe COVID-19, cognitive impairment at 6 months and hypertension were associated with long-term cognitive decline. These findings reveal the long-term cognitive trajectory of the disease and underscore the importance of post-infection cognitive care for COVID-19 survivors.

Objective: To investigate the factors that influence health literacy (HL) among Chinese patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and furnish theoretical underpinnings for the development of intervention strategies aimed at enhancing patients' quality of life. Methods: From May 2022 to December 2022, a comprehensive survey was conducted among both outpatients and inpatients diagnosed with (RA) in a tertiary hospital in China. The survey utilized various instruments, including a general information questionnaire, a chronic disease patient health literacy scale, the Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI), the Chinese-translated Rheumatoid Arthritis Self-Efficacy Scale, the Chinese-translated Rheumatoid Arthritis Stigma Scale, and the Chinese-translated Compliance Questionnaire for Rheumatology Treatments. Results: The average scores of HL, self-efficacy, medication adherence, and disability index were 83.54 ± 17.43, 84.91 ± 14.37, 70.16 ± 11.24, and 0.26 ± 0.44, respectively. HL in Chinese RA patients was negatively correlated with age, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), number of tender joints, number of swollen joints, and disease activity, while positively correlated with self-efficacy and medication adherence. Age, disease activity, disability index, self-efficacy, and medication adherence are predictive factors of HL, and a predictive model has been initially constructed. Conclusion: In the management of RA, healthcare professionals should develop and implement effective intervention measures by focusing on improving medication adherence, enhancing patients' self-efficacy, improving patients' physical function, and reducing disease activity. This will help enhance the health literacy and promote clinical outcomes in RA patients.

Objective: To investigate the clinical value of echocardiographic detection in the prenatal early diagnosis of Scimitar syndrome (SS) in fetuses, and to develop better and more accurate management strategies for improved prognosis. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on medical records and fetal echocardiographic findings of all cases diagnosed as SS between April 1, 2016 and June 1, 2021. To summarize its echocardiographic features and distinguishing points, comprehensive clinical data and prognostic information were gathered. Results: Six patients were diagnosed with SS during the study period. Major associated abnormalities included atrial septal defect (n = 3), right inferior pulmonary vein anomalies (n = 2), ventricular septal defect (n = 1), and right aortic arch (n = 1). Post-surgery, all patients exhibited unobstructed pulmonary vein flow and absence of pulmonary hypertension. The average follow-up duration was 24 months, during which five infants underwent surgical intervention for SS. Conclusion: Comprehensive prenatal screening, particularly combined coronal and sagittal views of the fetal thorax, enables accurate diagnosis of right SS. This approach not only aids in timely intervention but also provides crucial prognostic insights for the child's future well-being.

The transporter protein ABC subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) is implicated in epilepsy; however, its specific role remains unclear. In this study, we assessed changes in ABCG2 expression and its role in epilepsy both in vitro and in vivo. We observed an instantaneous increase in ABCG2 expression in epileptic animals and cells. Further, ABCG2 overexpression significantly suppressed the oxidative stress and apoptosis induced by glutamate, kainic acid (KA), and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in neuronal and microglia cells. Furthermore, inhibiting ABCG2 activity offset this protective effect. ABCG2-deficient mice (ABCG2-/-) showed shorter survival times and decreased survival rates when administered with pentylenetetrazole (PTZ). We also noticed the accumulation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) and decreased phosphorylation of mammalian target of rapamycin kinase (mTOR) along with increased ISGylation in ABCG2-/- mice. ABCG2 overexpression directly interacted with STAT1 and mTOR, leading to a decrease in their ISGylation. Our findings indicate the rapid increase in ABCG2 expression acts as a shield in epileptogenesis, indicating ABCG2 may serve as a potential therapeutic target for epilepsy treatment.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: As an experimental teaching method, emerging learning methods including problem-based learning (PBL), case-based learning, team-based learning and flipped classroom (FC) have been widely applied in dental education. This study aims to evaluate the effect of these teaching methods on dental education performance compared to traditional lecture-based learning (LBL). METHODS: The search was carried out in April 2024 in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. All randomized controlled trials were included and the methodological quality assessment was based on the guidelines described in the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews, followed by a meta-analysis using Stata 14.0 software. Using standard mean deviation (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) to determine the effectiveness of emerging teaching methods and LBL in all dental disciplines. Meta-regression was used to analyse sources of heterogeneity. Sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the stability, and Begg's analysis was used to determine whether there is publication bias. RESULTS: A total of 29 randomized controlled trials including 3502 students were included. The results indicate that emerging educational methods have a significantly positive effect on achieving higher scores (SMD = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.34-0.62, P < .001), whether it was theoretical scores (SMD = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.32-0.72, P < .001) or skill scores (SMD = 0.45, 95% CI = 0.15-0.76, P < .001). Compared to LBL, PBL (SMD = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.01-0.65, P = .045) and FC (SMD = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.31-0.69, P < .001) can both significantly improve students' academic performance. CONCLUSION: Compared to LBL, emerging educational methods (PBL, case-based learning, and FC) have significantly improved the learning effectiveness of dental students. These emerging educational methods can be advocated and popularized as routine teaching methods. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study is the first meta-analysis of the effects of emerging teaching methods in dental education which shows great impact of emerging teaching methods on students' development.

Hemorrhagic stroke is a global health problem owing to its high morbidity and mortality rates. Nicotinamide riboside is an important precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide characterized by a high bioavailability, safety profile, and robust effects on many cellular signaling processes. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of nicotinamide riboside against collagenase-induced hemorrhagic stroke and its underlying mechanisms of action. An intracerebral hemorrhage model was constructed by stereotactically injecting collagenase into the right striatum of adult male Institute for Cancer Research mice. After 30 minutes, nicotinamide riboside was administered via the tail vein. The mice were sacrificed at different time points for assessments. Nicotinamide riboside reduced collagenase-induced hemorrhagic area, significantly reduced cerebral water content and histopathological damage, promoted neurological function recovery, and suppressed reactive oxygen species production and neuroinflammation. Nicotinamide riboside exerts neuroprotective effects against collagenase-induced intracerebral hemorrhage by inhibiting neuroinflammation and oxidative stress.

OBJECTIVE: The revision procedure for failure of internal fixation after thoracolumbar fracture is controversial. Combined anterior and posterior surgery is associated with higher risk more intraoperative bleeding and tissue damage. The success rate of simple anterior surgery needs further confirmation, and posterior surgery lacks stability of internal fixation. This study evaluates the feasibility and surgical effect of multi-rod constructs in the revision of thoracolumbar fractures. METHODS: Eleven patients with thoracolumbar fractures who underwent previous construct failure and were treated with revision and internal fixation with the multi-rod technique from March 2017 to September 2018 were analyzed. The original internal fixation was removed and replaced in the medial insertion of satellite rods and bone graft. The average follow-up time was 15.97 months. The intraoperation blood loss, the time of the operation, activation and discharge and the rate of rod fracture were calculated. The sagittal Cobb angle before revision, after revision and at the last follow-up were compared. The clinical effect was evaluated by visual analogue scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index questionnaire (ODI). RESULTS: The average operation time was 107 min, the intraoperative blood loss was 131.81 mL, the active time was 1.59 days, and the discharge time was 10.89 days. No rod fractured again during the follow-up period. The paired t-test was used to compare the Cobb angle, VAS score, and ODI before and after surgery. There was significant difference in the sagittal Cobb angle between the pre-revision and the posterior sagittal position (p = 0.000), and no significant difference was found between post-revision and last follow-up (p = 0.551). VAS and ODI were greatly improved at the last follow-up. CONCLUSION: The literature on revision of thoracolumbar fractures is insufficient and comprises varying opinions. This paper proposes a new treatment option. The application of the multi-rod constructs in the revision of thoracolumbar fractures is safe, simple, and effective and might provide guidance for future clinical work.
