ABSTRACT
Objetivo: Esta pesquisa teve por objetivo investigar a associação entre variáveis sociais e odontológicas maternas e a presença de doença cárie na dentição infantil. Metodologia: A amostra foi constituída por 61 pares de mães e filhos freqüentadores de clínicas odontológicas infantis da Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa/PR. Foram coletadas informações sobre aspectos dentais e sociais por meio de entrevista e de exame clínico bucal. Resultados: Quanto às características sociais maternas relevantes, destacaram-se o estado civil e o nível educacional (75% das mães solteiras e 80% das mães com nível básico incompleto possuíam filhos com experiência de cárie). Com relação às características dentais; 90% das mães entrevistadas apresentaram algum tipo de necessidade de tratamento odontológico e destas, 64% possuíam filhos portadores da cárie dental. Conclusão: Os resultados sugerem que a presença da cárie dental em crianças está associada a características sociais e odontológicas maternas negativas.
Purpose: This research sought to investigate the association between maternal social and dental variables and child dental caries. Methods: The sample was composed by 61 pairs of mothers and children attending the Pediatric dental clinics of the Ponta Grossa State University/PR. Data on social and dental variables were collected through interviews and clinical examination. Results: Regarding the social maternal characteristics, marital status and educational level were the most important variables (75% of single mothers and 80% of mothers with incomplete basic education level had children with caries experience). In relation to maternal dental characteristics, 90% of the mothers had some need for dental treatment, and 64% of those mothers had children with dental caries. Conclusion: The results suggest that the presence of dental caries in children is associated with negative maternal social and dental characteristics.
