ABSTRACT

The taxonomy of poorly known crickets from the genus Pendleburyella Chopard, 1969 (Gryllidae, Pentacentrinae) is reviewed. The type specimens of described species were re-located and re-examined. Based on more recent collections, we describe two new species: Pendleburyella eirmosa sp. nov. and Pendleburyella pimela sp. nov., from Brunei Darussalam and Singapore respectively. The new material also allowed us to examine the male genitalia and describe the male calling song of the genus for the first time.

ABSTRACT

A species of scaly cricket is described here: Ornebius lupus sp. nov. from the mangrove forests in Singapore. Ornebius pullus Ingrisch, 2006 is recorded in eastern Sabah for the first time. The calling songs of Cycloptiloides bimaculatus Tan et al., 2021 and Ornebius pullus from Sabah are described. We also revise the diagnosis of Ectatoderus nigrofasciatus Tan et al., 2021 from Brunei Darussalam.

ABSTRACT

Recent orthopteran surveys in the hyper-diverse Borneo, i.e., Brunei Darussalam and Sandakan in Sabah, allow us to review the scaly crickets from the subfamily Mogoplistinae there. We discover and describe the male, as well as formally naming Cycloptiloides bimaculata Tan, Japir Chung, sp. nov. from Sandakan. This species was previously described as sp. 1 in a comprehensive revision by Ingrisch (2006) but only the females were known. We also describe Ectatoderus nigrofasciatus Tan Wahab, sp. nov. from Brunei Darussalam. New locality records are reported for Apterornebius kinabalu Ingrisch, 2006 in Sandakan (Sabah) and Ornebius pullus Ingrisch, 2006 in Belait District (Brunei).

ABSTRACT

Three new species were described from Borneo: Itara (Bornitara) spinosa sp. nov. and Aphonoides duri sp. nov. from Brunei and Varitrella (Cantotrella) suikei sp. nov. from Sandakan in Sabah. We describe the call of Varitrella (Cantotrella) suikei sp. nov. In addition to the new species descriptions, we also report new locality records of other recently discovered species: Borneloria spinosa Gorochov, 2018 in Belait (Brunei Darussalam), species of Anemozara Gorochov, 2014 in Brunei Darussalam and Terrozacla borneo Gorochov, 2014 in Belait.

ABSTRACT

As many as 72 species were documented when sampling was conducted in Kuala Belalong in Brunei Darussalam between 2016 and 2017 but this remains non-exhaustive and orthopteran species are still awaiting discovery. Based on new material collected in 2019, two new species of katydids are described here: Segestes nostosalgos sp. n. and Sathrophylliopsis mentham sp. n. These two discoveries are of particular interest: Segestes nostosalgos sp. n. represents the first record of the tribe Sexavaini in Borneo; Sathrophylliopsis mentham sp. n. is drastically different from congeners by the lack of dense fine long hairs around the body.

ABSTRACT

Rhicnogryllus Chopard, 1925 is a small and relatively unknown group of Sword-tailed Cricket of the subfamily Trigonidiinae. This genus currently comprises 12 species from Asia, Africa (including Madagascar), South America and the Pacific. Species have been recognised by the presence of parallel and elevated veins in both males (which lack stridulatory organs) and females. However, this approach to classifying Trigonidiinae may be outdated and examination of male genitalia can offer better insights into the generic status of these species and how they are related or unrelated. By comparing male genitalia of new materials and old specimens, we describe a new species from the Philippines: Rhicnogryllus? paetensis n. sp., which is similar to the type species. Our hypothesis is that Rhicnogryllus is a non-monophyletic and artificial genus, and that the genus should comprise only Southeast Asian members (since the type species Rhicnogryllus fascipes Chopard, 1925 is known from the Philippines). We are cautiously against describing new genus to avoid adding more confusion until a comprehensive revision to the subfamily and Rhicnogryllus has been undertaken.

ABSTRACT

The tribe Meconematini is a monophyletic and speciose group of slender and predatory katydids from the Indomalayan and Palearctic region (Mugleston et al., 2018). It is especially species-rich from the biodiverse regions of Southeast Asia (Cigliano et al., 2020) but also elusive, as many new species and genera are still being discovered from tropical Southeast Asia (e.g., Tan Wahab, 2018a; Gorochov, 2019). As more material is accumulated, new understandings of how species are related and/or classified emerged. A species of Meconematini was first described from the primary dipterocarp forest of Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre in Brunei Darussalam, Borneo among a few other related species (Tan et al., 2017, Tan Wahab, 2018): Kuzicus mirabilis Tan Wahab, 2018. This species exhibits the deep posteromedian notch of the last male tergite characteristics of Xiphidiopsis Redtenbacher, 1891 but differs by the presence of sclerotized yoke-like epiphallus, typical of Kuzicus Gorochov, 1993 (see Tan Wahab, 2018a). A year later, A. V. Gorochov erected a new genus Cercoteratura Gorochov, 2019 based on a new species Cercoteratura variegata Gorochov, 2019 from Sumatra and Borneo (Gorochov, 2019). Three other species were also included in this genus, mainly from Sumatra and Thai-Peninsula. We found that the species from Brunei Darussalam could also belong to this genus and represent the eastern-most record of this genus. We provide a key to known species of Cercoteratura, although it is likely that this genus is more speciose than currently known. We also present a morphological comparison of the three similar genera Cercoteratura, Kuzicus and Xiphidiopsis.

ABSTRACT

Gryllacrididae, or raspy crickets, belong to the monophyletic clade Stenopelmatoidea, and have complex taxonomy. Many genera require revision, including the ones from Southeast Asia. Orthopteran surveys in Kuala Belalong, Brunei Darussalam, Borneo led to the discovery of a new species of apterous gryllacridid from Brunei Darussalam: Melaneremus? bellus sp. nov. We also redescribe Phlebogryllacris venosa (Walker, 1869) and provide images of this species of both live and preserved specimens. In the process of describing, specimens from morphologically similar genera were also examined. We provide some notes on these genera to aid future taxonomic studies.

ABSTRACT

There are now more than 28,000 described orthopterans globally (Cigliano et al., 2018) and this figure is likely to increase in the future. The same is true for Southeast Asia, where we are still at a stage of discovering species new to science, and this is partly an artefact of incomplete sampling (Tan et al., 2017a). In one of the most popular biodiversity hotspots, i.e., Borneo, is the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre. It is located in the primary lowland and ridge dipterocarp forests of the Ulu Temburong National Park, Brunei Darussalam. Recent collection of orthopterans in the area led to the discovery of several new species of katydids (Tan et al., 2017b; Tan Wahab, 2017a) and crickets (Tan et al., 2017c; Tan Wahab, 2017b). Here, we describe another new species of katydid, from the genus Tapiena Bolívar, 1906. Tapiena currently consists of 26 species (Tan et al., 2015) and is distributed around Asia and even Africa. In Borneo, only one species is known: Tapiena incisa Karny, 1923 from Sarawak (see Karny, 1923). The new species Tapiena paraincisa sp. nov. represents the second species described from Borneo.

ABSTRACT

Based on extended surveys in Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre, Brunei Darussalam, one new species of Kuzicus is described here: Kuzicus mirabilis sp. nov. This represents the first species described from Borneo for this Asiatic genus. The female of Pulchroteratura huiqing Tan et al., 2017 is described here, first time for the genus. The females of Leptoteratura (Rhinoteratura) chela Tan et al., 2017 and Pseudoteratura (Pseudoteratura) kenuan Tan et al., 2017 are also described for the first time.

ABSTRACT

Based on the new material collected in Kuala Belalong in Brunei Darussalam, four new taxa of Meconematini katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae: Meconematinae) are described here. Three new species from three previously known genera are described: Alloteratura (Alloteratura) belalongensis sp. nov., Leptoteratura (Rhinoteratura) chela sp. nov., and Pseudoteratura (Pseudoteratura) kenuan sp. nov. Moreover, one new genus is erected based on the unique type species which is also new to science: Pulchroteratura huiqing gen. et sp. nov.

ABSTRACT

Stictophaula Hebard, 1922 is a genus of katydid from the subfamily Phaneropterinae, and most similar to Arnobia Stål, 1876. A review of the genus Stictophaula reveals 26 species from Southeast Asia. One new species, Stictophaula bruneii sp. nov., is described from Brunei Darussalam. Nomenclature change is also verified: Arnobia ocellata comb. nov. An illustrated key to species is presented.

ABSTRACT

New taxa from the subfamily Landrevinae (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) are expected despite recent work on its taxonomy. Here, two more new species from Brunei Darussalam, Borneo are described: Duolandrevus (Eulandrevus) kawataredoki sp. nov. and Endodrelanva nympha sp. nov. The male calling song of D. (E.) kawataredoki sp. nov. is also described. We report the occurrence of a Duolandrevus (Bejorama) from Brunei close to (nr.) luzonensis Otte, 1988. We also document from Brunei a case of parasitic wasp from the genus Liris (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae: Larrini) hunting a Landrevinae.
