ABSTRACT

The "Dunning-Kruger effect" refers to the tendency of poor performers to overestimate test outcomes. Although a widespread phenomenon, questions exist regarding its source and sensitivity to countermeasures. The present field study aimed to (a) examine whether practice with tests used in previous classes can enhance students' ability to estimate test outcomes, (b) determine the main source of the effect (i.e., is it unawareness of one's readiness or wishful thinking?), and (c) assess the extent to which particular individual differences can be used as predictors of test performance. In this study, participants practiced with old tests and then completed the final exam. Before and after the exam, they predicted their grades and indicated their subjective confidence in the predictions made. Furthermore, participants' emotional intelligence and self-efficacy about their academic abilities were surveyed. Results suggested that poor performers were not unaware of their test preparation, but rather engaged in wishful thinking. In fact, although they overestimated their test grades, their estimates not only improved after completing the final test but also were regarded with little confidence. Overall, estimation bias was a good predictor of students' final test performance, whereas subjective confidence and emotional intelligence only weakly predicted such performance. Thus, if proactive interventions are to be developed for at-risk students, performance-estimation tasks may offer valuable information regarding such students' future performance in a course much more than emotional intelligence and self-efficacy measures.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Syrian refugees (SRs) in Lebanon are often relegated to informal camps with poor living conditions and substandard access to health care. This study examined the unique condition of urban camp-dwelling SRs in Lebanon. This population is rarely studied as they are marginalized and difficult to access. We sought to assess the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and health care-seeking behaviors within this population. Methods: A randomized group of urban camp-dwelling SR participants completed a survey on disease burden, health care-seeking patterns, and attitudes toward care. A second group completed interviews regarding health care experiences. We present descriptive population and epidemiologic measures to quantify NCD burden and health care-seeking behaviors. Results: Of 101 participants, 39% reported arthritis, 25% skin infection, 24% high blood pressure, 16% chronic lung conditions, 16% eye disease, and 15% diabetes. Major themes from interviews with SRs included poor living conditions, high cost of health care services, and perceived discrimination by health care workers (HCWs). The major theme from interviews with HCWs was a perception that SRs received health care services similar to members of surrounding communities. Discussion: In this population, we found a higher prevalence of NCDs at younger ages than in the general SR population. We described perceived barriers to accessing health care, including the noteworthy finding of perceived discrimination by HCWs in a linguistically and culturally related host community. We discussed social determinants of health within the camp and refugees' ability to access health care services.

ABSTRACT

Word retrieval deficits for specific grammatical categories, such as verbs versus nouns, occur as a consequence of brain damage. Such deficits are informative about the nature of lexical organization in the human brain. This study examined retrieval of grammatical categories across three languages in a trilingual person with aphasia who spoke Arabic, French, and English. In order to delineate the nature of word production difficulty, comprehension was tested, and a variety of concomitant lexical-semantic variables were analysed. The patient demonstrated a consistent noun-verb dissociation in picture naming and narrative speech, with severely impaired production of verbs across all three languages. The cross-linguistically similar noun-verb dissociation, coupled with little evidence of semantic impairment, suggests that (a) the patient has a true "nonsemantic" grammatical category specific deficit, and (b) lexical organization in multilingual speakers shares grammatical class information between languages. The findings of this study contribute to our understanding of the architecture of lexical organization in bilinguals.
