ABSTRACT

The oxidation of Sn2+ can occur even after the completion of the perovskite crystallization in a low oxygen environment. Concerning this, the natural antioxidant vitamin C (VC) is introduced to the surface of Sn-Pb mixed perovskite using a postprocessing method to achieve the purpose of inhibiting Sn2+ oxidation and enhancing perovskite solar cells performance. The results indicate that the VC could effectively inhibit Sn2+ oxidation and heal the vacancy defects of the annealed perovskite film. Meanwhile, the introduction of VC significantly improves the morphology and crystalline quality of the perovskite films. After optimization, the highest power conversion efficiency of the VC-treated Sn-Pb mixed device increased to 20.44%. Moreover, the VC-treated unencapsulated device shows excellent long-term stability, retaining 75.3% of its initial efficiency after 800 h of aging in a N2 atmosphere, which is much higher than the 20.1% of the control device.

ABSTRACT

Background: Telehealth involves delivering healthcare remotely through digital platforms such as telephone and video calls. Use of telehealth surged during the COVID-19 pandemic because of the need for contactless healthcare. The Saudi Ministry of Health established the "937 telephone medical consultation call center" almost 10 years ago. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine public awareness of, utilization of, and satisfaction with the 937 call center service, and to assess associated factors. Materials and methods: This national community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted through multistage sampling with proportional allocation from 20 health directorates. Participants were selected from the general population in public places and were interviewed with a validated questionnaire. Results: Of 7951 approached individuals, 7692 agreed to participate (response rate 96.7%). Seventy-eight percent of participants were aware of the 937 service, and 56.4% had previously used the service. Most (86%) users were satisfied with the service. Long waiting times were the most frequent reason (46.6%) for dissatisfaction. In multivariable analysis, service awareness and utilization were both significantly associated with having higher education (aOR 4.03, 95%CI: 3.17-5.12 and aOR 3.42, 95%CI: 2.64-4.42, respectively). Positive impressions of telephone medical consultation services, Saudi nationality, having children, having medical insurance, and having a history of chronic disease were significantly associated with awareness of, utilization of, and satisfaction with the service. Conclusion: The study revealed high awareness of, utilization of, and satisfaction with the 937 telephone medical consultation call center, thus suggesting increased public acceptance of the service. Moreover, the study identified socio-demographic factors influencing public awareness of, utilization of, and satisfaction with telehealth. Further studies are required to increase understanding of the facilitators of, and barriers to, the use of service among various population groups.

ABSTRACT

The current study focused on the design of an extremely sensitive electrochemical sensor of ascorbic acid based on a mixture of NiAl2O4-NiO nanoparticles that, produced in a single step using the sol-gel method, on an ITO electrode. This new sensing platform is useful for the detection of ascorbic acid with a wide range of concentrations extending from the attomolar to the molar. SEM micrographs show the porous structure of the NiAl2O4-NiO sample, with a high specific surface area, which is beneficial for the catalytic performance of the nanocomposite. An XRD diffractogram confirmed the existence of two phases, NiAl2O4 and NiO, both corresponding to the face-centred cubic crystal structure. The performances of the modified electrode, as a biomolecule, in the detection of ascorbic acid was evaluated electrochemically by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The sensor exhibited a sensitive electrocatalytic response at a working potential of E = +0.3 V vs. Ag/Ag Cl, reaching a steady-state current within 30 s after each addition of ascorbic acid solution with a wide dynamic range of concentrations extending from attolevels (10-18 M) to molar (10 mM) and limits of detection and quantification of 1.2 × 10-18 M and 3.96 × 10-18 M, respectively. This detection device was tested for the quantification of ascorbic acid in a 500 mg vitamin C commercialized tablet that was not pre-treated.

Background: Insufficient information exists regarding the fracture resistance and failure pattern of newly developed zirconia-reinforced lithium disilicate (ZL, Vita Ambria) onlays. This in vitro study compared the fracture resistance of two types of onlays: monolithic lithium disilicate (LD) and monolithic ZL. Methods: Forty-eight ceramic onlay restorations were fabricated on epoxy dies using a maxillary first premolar model. The samples were divided into two main groups: LD and ZL. Half of each group was subjected to thermomechanical fatigue loading (TML) using a chewing simulator. All the samples were cemented with self-adhesive resin cement. Subsequently, they were loaded until failure in a universal testing machine, and the fracture patterns and resistance were recorded. Results: Before TML, ZL demonstrated the highest statistically significant mean fracture resistance (499.76±34.14N) compared to LD (470.40±27.38N). After TML, ZL showed the highest non-statistically significant mean fracture resistance (429.27±131.42N), while LD's mean fracture resistance decreased (377.31±62.18N). Conclusion: Monolithic zirconia-reinforced onlays demonstrated higher fracture resistance and a more favorable failure mode compared to LD. However, the impact of thermomechanical aging resulted in reduced fracture resistance for both materials, with a notable preference observed for ZL.

Introduction: Surgical education is undergoing a transformation, moving away from traditional models towards more modern approaches that integrate experiential and didactic methods. This shift is particularly pertinent in the realm of fetal and neonatal surgery, where specialized training is crucial. Historical training methods, such as cadaveric dissection, have been prevalent for centuries, but newer innovations, including animal and non-animal simulation models, are gaining prominence. This manuscript aims to explore the use of both animal and non-animal models in surgical education, with a specific focus on fetal and neonatal surgery. Animal models: The use of animal models in surgical training has a long history, dating back to Halsted's introduction in 1889. These models, often utilizing large animals like swine and dogs, offer valuable insights into fetal and neonatal surgeries. They allow for the study of long-term outcomes and the simulation of various diseases and anomalies, providing essential training experiences not readily available in human surgeries. However, there are notable limitations, including anatomical and physiological differences from humans, ethical considerations, and substantial infrastructure and maintenance costs. Simulation models: Simulation-based training offers several benefits, including standardized and safe learning environments without risks to real patients. Bench models, using synthetic materials or non-living animal tissue, provide cost-effective options for skills development. Virtual reality and 3-D printing technologies further enhance simulation experiences, allowing for the replication of complex clinical scenarios and patient-specific anatomies. While these models offer significant advantages, they lack the complexity of biological systems found in animal models. Conclusion: In conclusion, both animal and non-animal simulation models play crucial roles in enhancing surgical education, particularly in fetal and neonatal surgery. While advancements in non-animal technologies are important for ethical reasons, the continued necessity of animal models in certain areas should be acknowledged. By responsibly integrating these models into training programs, surgical education can be further enriched while upholding ethical standards and ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Developing sustainable metal-free carbon-based electrocatalysts is essential for the deployment of metal-air batteries such as zinc-air batteries (ZABs), among which doping of heteroatoms has attracted tremendous interest over the past decade. However, the effect of the heteroatom covalent bonds in carbon matrix on catalysis was neglected in most studies. Here, an efficient metal-free oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst is demonstrated by the N-P bonds anchored carbon (termed N,P-C-1000). The N,P-C-1000 catalyst exhibits superior specific surface area of 1362 m2 g-1 and ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.83 V, close to that of 20 wt% Pt/C. Theoretical computations reveal that the p-band center for C-2p orbit in N,P-C-1000 has higher interaction strength with the intermediates, thus reducing the overall reaction energy barrier. The N,P-C-1000 assembled primary ZAB can attain a large peak power density of 121.9 mW cm-2 and a steady discharge platform of ∼1.20 V throughout 120 h. Besides, when served as the cathodic catalyst in a solid-state ZAB, the battery shows flexibility, conspicuous open circuit potential (1.423 V), and high peak power density (85.8 mW cm-2). Our findings offer a strategy to tune the intrinsic structure of carbon-based catalysts for improved electrocatalytic performance and shed light on future catalysts design for energy storage technologies beyond batteries.

ABSTRACT

The case involves a 23-year-old Dominican woman's admission to Hospital Docente Nuestra Señora De la Altagracia for an elective cesarean section at 38 weeks gestation with conjoined twins. Despite effective treatment for syphilis in the third trimester, her medical history complicated the situation. The twins, thoraco-omphalopagus conjoined, share vital organs and exhibit congenital anomalies, posing unique diagnostic and management challenges. This case contributes to the scarce literature on conjoined twins, especially in the Dominican Republic. It highlights the complexities of diagnosis, prognosis, and management strategies for such rare cases. This emphasizes the importance of ongoing research and medical intervention in addressing these challenges.

ABSTRACT

Aims: The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) was introduced in 1997 to address the needs of young active patients using a historically proven large-diameter metal-on-metal (MoM) bearing. A single designer surgeon's consecutive series of 130 patients (144 hips) was previously reported at five and ten years, reporting three and ten failures, respectively. The aim of this study was to extend the follow-up of this original cohort at 25 years. Methods: The study extends the reporting on the first consecutive 144 resurfacing procedures in 130 patients for all indications. All operations were undertaken between August 1997 and May 1998. The mean age at operation was 52.1 years (SD 9.93; 17 to 76), and included 37 female patients (28.5%). Failure was defined as revision of either component for any reason. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed. Routine follow-up with serum metal ion levels, radiographs, and Oxford Hip Scores (OHSs) was undertaken. Results: Overall implant survival was 83.50% (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.79 to 0.90) at 25 years, and the number at risk was 79. Survival in male patients at 25 years was 89.5% (95% CI 0.83 to 0.96) compared to 66.9% for female patients (95% CI 0.51 to 0.83). Ten additional failures occurred in the period of ten to 25 years. These involved an adverse reaction to metal debris in four patients, a periprosthetic femoral neck fracture affecting five patients, and aseptic loosening in one patient. The median chromium levels were 49.50 nmol/l (interquartile range (IQR) 34 to 70), and the median cobalt serum levels were 42 nmol/l (IQR 24.50 to 71.25). The median OHS at last follow-up was 35 (IQR 10 to 48). During the 25-year study period, 29 patients died. Patient survival at 25 years was 75.10% (95% CI 0.67 to 0.83). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that MoM hip resurfacing using the BHR provides a durable alternative to total hip arthroplasty (THA), particularly in younger male patients with osteoarthritis wishing to maintain a high level of function. These results compare favourably to the best results for THAs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs), a group of inborn errors of metabolism, include various subtypes, for example, mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) and Gaucher disease (GD). Besides the physical/mental disabilities, they suffer from several oral deteriorations. AIM: To evaluate the oral health status of Egyptian children with LSD. DESIGN: Thirty LSD children and thirty non-LSD children were enrolled for this study according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Dental indices were used to assess caries prevalence and periodontal status. Saliva samples were collected from all enrolled children to estimate interleukin 6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and protein levels as well as Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli colony counts. RESULTS: Children with MPS and GD showed non-significant differences in decayed, missing, or filled teeth (DMFT) scores (p = .115). Scores of dmft showed a significant increase in MPS, but not in GD children (p = .020, p = .127). Children with LSD showed significantly increased Modified Gingival Index (MGI), Plaque Index (PI), Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-s) scores (p < .001) and salivary IL-6 and TNF-α (p = .007, p = .001, p < .0001, p = .002, respectively) and salivary total proteins (p = .001) levels. Unexpectedly, non-significant differences were observed in salivary Streptococcus mutans or Lactobacilli counts in children with MPS and GD (p = .058, p = .420, p = .502, p = .053, respectively). CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first article that evaluates Egyptian children with LSD. We demonstrated high caries prevalence in primary teeth, not permanent teeth, in children with MPS and poor gingival/hygiene status in children with MPS and GD, which triggered a state of inflammation. The daily supplement intake prevented oral bacterial growth. The most probable cause of oral alterations is decreased salivary flow rate, as deduced from a significantly increased salivary protein.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: In epilepsy, early diagnosis, accurate determination of epilepsy type, proper selection of antiseizure medication, and monitoring are all essential. However, despite recent therapeutic advances and conceptual reconsiderations in the classification and management of epilepsy, serious gaps are still encountered in day-to-day practice in Egypt as well as several other resource-limited countries. Premature mortality, poor quality of life, socio-economic burden, cognitive problems, poor treatment outcomes, and comorbidities are major challenges that require urgent actions to be implemented at all levels. In recognition of this, a group of Egyptian epilepsy experts met through a series of consecutive meetings to specify the main concepts concerning the diagnosis and management of epilepsy, with the ultimate goal of establishing a nationwide Egyptian consensus. METHODS: The consensus was developed through a modified Delphi methodology. A thorough review of the most recent relevant literature and international guidelines was performed to evaluate their applicability to the Egyptian situation. Afterward, several remote and live rounds were scheduled to reach a final agreement for all listed statements. RESULTS: Of 278 statements reviewed in the first round, 256 achieved ≥80% agreement. Live discussion and refinement of the 22 statements that did not reach consensus during the first round took place, followed by final live voting then consensus was achieved for all remaining statements. SIGNIFICANCE: With the implementation of these unified recommendations, we believe this will bring about substantial improvements in both the quality of care and treatment outcomes for persons with epilepsy in Egypt. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: This work represents the efforts of a group of medical experts to reach an agreement on the best medical practice related to people with epilepsy based on previously published recommendations while taking into consideration applicable options in resource-limited countries. The publication of this document is expected to minimize many malpractice issues and pave the way for better healthcare services on both individual and governmental levels.

ABSTRACT

Boosting stretchability and electric output is critical for high-performance wearable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG). Herein, for the first time, a new approach for tuning the composition of surface functional groups through surfactant self-assembly to improve the tribopositivity, where the assembly increases the transferred charge density and the relative permittivity of water polyurethane (WPU). Incorporating bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI-) and alkali metal ions into a mixture of WPU and the surfactant forms a stretchable film that simultaneously functions as positive tribolayer and electrode, preventing the conventional detachment of tribolayer and electrode in long term usage. Further, the conductivity of the crosslinked film reaches 3.3 × 10-3 mS cm-1 while the elongation at break reaches 362%. Moreover, the surfactant self-assembly impedes the adverse impact of the fluorine-containing groups on tribopositivity. Consequently, the charge density reaches 155 µC m-2, being the highest recorded for WPU and stretchable ionic conductor based TENG. This work introduces a novel approach for boosting the output charge density while avoiding the adverse effect of ionic salts in solid conductors through a universal surfactant self-assembly strategy, which can be extended to other materials. Further, the device is used to monitor and harvest the kinetic energy of human body motion.

ABSTRACT

The presence of heterogeneity in responses to oncolytic virotherapy poses a barrier to clinical effectiveness, as resistance to this treatment can occur through the inhibition of viral spread within the tumor, potentially leading to treatment failures. Here we show that 4-octyl itaconate (4-OI), a chemical derivative of the Krebs cycle-derived metabolite itaconate, enhances oncolytic virotherapy with VSVΔ51 in various models including human and murine resistant cancer cell lines, three-dimensional (3D) patient-derived colon tumoroids and organotypic brain tumor slices. Furthermore, 4-OI in combination with VSVΔ51 improves therapeutic outcomes in a resistant murine colon tumor model. Mechanistically, we find that 4-OI suppresses antiviral immunity in cancer cells through the modification of cysteine residues in MAVS and IKKß independently of the NRF2/KEAP1 axis. We propose that the combination of a metabolite-derived drug with an oncolytic virus agent can greatly improve anticancer therapeutic outcomes by direct interference with the type I IFN and NF-κB-mediated antiviral responses.

ABSTRACT

We examined the effect of the puberty blocker, leuprolide acetate, on sex differences in juvenile rough-and-tumble play behavior and anxiety-like behavior in adolescent male and female rats. We also evaluated leuprolide treatment on gonadal and pituitary hormone levels and activity-regulated cytoskeleton-protein messenger RNA levels within the adolescent amygdala, a region important both for rough-and-tumble play and anxiety-like behavior. Our findings suggest that leuprolide treatment lowered anxiety-like behavior during adolescent development, suggesting that the maturation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone systems may be linked to increased anxiety. These data provide a potential new model to understand the emergence of increased anxiety triggered around puberty. Leuprolide also reduced masculinized levels of rough-and-tumble play behavior, lowered follicle-stimulating hormone, and produced a consistent pattern of reducing or halting sex differences of hormone levels, including testosterone, growth hormone, thyrotropin, and corticosterone levels. Therefore, leuprolide treatment not only pauses sexual development of peripheral tissues, but also reduces sex differences in hormones, brain, and behavior, allowing for better harmonization of these systems following gender-affirming hormone treatment. These data contribute to the intended use of puberty blockers in stopping sex differences from developing further with the potential benefit of lowering anxiety-like behavior.

ABSTRACT

This study aims at understanding the effect of the photoreduction process during the synthesis of gold (Au)-doped TiO2 colloids on the conferred functionalities on cotton fabrics. TiO2/Au and TiO2/Au/SiO2 colloids were synthesized through the sol-gel method with and without undergoing the photoreduction step based on different molar ratios of Au:Ti (0.001 and 0.01) and TiO2/SiO2 (1:1 and 1:2.3). The colloids were applied to cotton fabrics, and the obtained photocatalytic self-cleaning, wet photocatalytic activity, UV protection, and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria were investigated. The obtained results demonstrated that the photoreduction of Au weakened the self-cleaning effect and reduced the photocatalytic activity of coated fabrics. Also, an excess amount of Au deteriorated the photocatalytic activity under both UV and visible light. The most efficient self-cleaning effect was obtained on fabrics coated with a ternary TiO2/Au/SiO2 colloid containing ionic Au, where it decomposed coffee and red-wine stains after 3 h of illumination. Adding silica (SiO2) made the fabrics superhydrophilic and led to greater methylene blue (MB) dye adsorption, a faster dye degradation pace, and more efficient stain removal. Moreover, the photoreduction process affected the size of Au nanoparticles (NPs), weakened the antibacterial activity of fabrics against both types of tested bacteria, and modestly increased the UV protection. In general, the photoactivity of Au-doped colloids was influenced by the synthesis method, the ionic and metallic states of the Au dopant, the concentration of the Au dopant, and the presence and concentration of silica.

ABSTRACT

ClpG is a novel autonomous disaggregase found in Pseudomonas aeruginosa that confers resistance to lethal heat stress. The mechanism by which ClpG specifically targets protein aggregates for disaggregation is unknown. In their recent work published in JBC, Katikaridis et al. (2023) identify an avidity-based mechanism by which four or more ClpG subunits, through specific N-terminal hydrophobic residues located on an exposed ß-sheet loop, interact with multiple hydrophobic patches on an aggregated protein substrate. This study establishes a model for substrate binding to a prokaryotic disaggregase that should inform further investigations into other autonomous disaggregases.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated factors associated with anxiety and depression in COPD outpatients. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 702 COPD outpatients from two major Jordanian hospitals using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was conducted. RESULTS: Significant associations were found with gender (Anxiety OR: 5.29, 95%CI: 2.38-11.74; Depression OR: 0.20, 95%CI: 0.08-0.51), disease severity (Anxiety OR: 2.97, 95%CI: 1.80-4.91; Depression OR: 15.95, 95%CI: 5.32-52.63), LABA use (Anxiety OR: 16.12, 95%CI: 8.26-32.26; Depression OR: 16.95, 95%CI: 8.33-34.48), medication count (Anxiety OR: 0.73, 95%CI: 0.59-0.90; Depression OR: 0.51, 95%CI: 0.40-0.64), mMRC score (Anxiety OR: 2.41, 95%CI: 1.81-3.22; Depression OR: 2.31, 95%CI: 1.76-3.03), and inhalation technique (Anxiety OR: 0.95, 95%CI: 0.93-0.97; Depression OR: 0.92, 95%CI: 0.90-0.95). Other factors associated with anxiety included high income, urban living, diabetes, hypertension, LAMA use, and fewer COPD medications. Depression was also linked with heart disease, increased age, and longer disease duration. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of anxiety and depression among COPD patients necessitates targeted interventions. Future research that recruits a more diverse sample in multiple sites and establishes the cause-effect relationship between the study predictors and outcome could provide a more robust conclusion on factors associated with anxiety and depression among COPD patients.

ABSTRACT

Motion recognition (MR)-based somatosensory interaction technology, which interprets user movements as input instructions, presents a natural approach for promoting human-computer interaction, a critical element for advancing metaverse applications. Herein, this work introduces a non-intrusive muscle-sensing wearable device, that in conjunction with machine learning, enables motion-control-based somatosensory interaction with metaverse avatars. To facilitate MR, the proposed device simultaneously detects muscle mechanical activities, including dynamic muscle shape changes and vibrational mechanomyogram signals, utilizing a flexible 16-channel pressure sensor array (weighing ≈0.38 g). Leveraging the rich information from multiple channels, a recognition accuracy of ≈96.06% is achieved by classifying ten lower-limb motions executed by ten human subjects. In addition, this work demonstrates the practical application of muscle-sensing-based somatosensory interaction, using the proposed wearable device, for enabling the real-time control of avatars in a virtual space. This study provides an alternative approach to traditional rigid inertial measurement units and electromyography-based methods for achieving accurate human motion capture, which can further broaden the applications of motion-interactive wearable devices for the coming metaverse age.

ABSTRACT

R2TP is a chaperone complex consisting of the AAA+ ATPases RUVBL1 and RUVBL2, as well as RPAP3 and PIH1D1 proteins. R2TP is responsible for the assembly of macromolecular complexes mainly acting through different adaptors. Using proximity-labeling mass spectrometry, we identified deleted in primary ciliary dyskinesia (DPCD) as an adaptor of R2TP. Here, we demonstrate that R2TP-DPCD influences ciliogenesis initiation through a unique mechanism by interaction with Akt kinase to regulate its phosphorylation levels rather than its stability. We further show that DPCD is a heart-shaped monomeric protein with two domains. A highly conserved region in the cysteine- and histidine-rich domains-containing proteins and SGT1 (CS) domain of DPCD interacts with the RUVBL2 DII domain with high affinity to form a stable R2TP-DPCD complex both in cellulo and in vitro. Considering that DPCD is one among several CS-domain-containing proteins found to associate with RUVBL1/2, we propose that RUVBL1/2 are CS-domain-binding proteins that regulate complex assembly and downstream signaling.

ABSTRACT

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common cause of acute lower respiratory tract infection in infants, older adults and the immunocompromised. Effective directly acting antivirals are not yet available for clinical use. To address this, we screen the ReFRAME drug-repurposing library consisting of 12,000 small molecules against RSV. We identify 21 primary candidates including RSV F and N protein inhibitors, five HSP90 and four IMPDH inhibitors. We select lonafarnib, a licensed farnesyltransferase inhibitor, and phase III candidate for hepatitis delta virus (HDV) therapy, for further follow-up. Dose-response analyses and plaque assays confirm the antiviral activity (IC50: 10-118 nM). Passaging of RSV with lonafarnib selects for phenotypic resistance and fixation of mutations in the RSV fusion protein (T335I and T400A). Lentiviral pseudotypes programmed with variant RSV fusion proteins confirm that lonafarnib inhibits RSV cell entry and that these mutations confer lonafarnib resistance. Surface plasmon resonance reveals RSV fusion protein binding of lonafarnib and co-crystallography identifies the lonafarnib binding site within RSV F. Oral administration of lonafarnib dose-dependently reduces RSV virus load in a murine infection model using female mice. Collectively, this work provides an overview of RSV drug repurposing candidates and establishes lonafarnib as a bona fide fusion protein inhibitor.
