ABSTRACT

The purpose of this descriptive study was to highlight how a system-level education department operationalized the 2022 Association for Nursing Professional Development Scope and Standards of Practice into a learning needs assessment (LNA) survey. This was a collaborative approach to LNA design, implementation, and evaluation. The LNA conducted among nursing professional development practitioners determined areas for educational improvement, barriers to nursing professional development, and identified standards and competencies critical to improving knowledge acquisition.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the efficacy of online versus instructor-led advanced cardiac life support for first-time registered nurse participants. Participants were randomized into online or instructor-led courses, with learning outcomes measured in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains. The instructor-led group showed statistically significant better performance during simulated megacode. Further analysis identified key areas where instructor-led participants out-performed the online group, enabling educators to articulate risk and benefit of the two learning modalities.

ABSTRACT

Maintaining the balance of fluid and electrolytes is crucial to the care of patients across the continuum. To do this, a practitioner must be cognizant of key monitoring and assessment parameters. Key electrolytes, their function within the body, normal values, signs and symptoms of imbalances, key treatment modalities, and other considerations are discussed.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To improve communication, discharge readiness, and satisfaction of burn patients and their families. METHODS: In March 2009, the burn intensive care unit at University of Louisville Hospital, Louisville, Kentucky, incorporated family presence during dressing changes. Adverse family events during observation, measures of patient- and family-centered care according to a standardized patient satisfaction survey, infection rates, and staff members' response to the intervention were tracked. RESULTS: Through December 2011, no adverse family events occurred, patients' satisfaction scores increased, and infection rates did not increase. Staff members responded positively to the project. CONCLUSIONS: Allowing family presence during dressing changes provides an opportunity to educate and include patients' family members in care delivery.
