ABSTRACT

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal associated with osteoporosis, liver, and kidney disease. The black soldier fly (BSF) Hermetia illucens may be exposed to Cd during the transformation of livestock manure. The BSF has a high tolerance to Cd. In the previous work of the laboratory, we found that vitamin E (VE) may play a role in the tolerance of BSF to Cd exposure. The main findings are as follows: The BSF larvae pretreated with exogenous VE had heavier body weight, lower content and toxicity of Cd under similar Cd exposure. Even in high Cd exposure at the concentrations of 300 and 700 mg/kg, the BSF larvae pretreated with exogenous VE at a concentration of 100 mg/kg still reduced the Cd toxicity to 85.33 % and 84.43 %, respectively. The best-fitting models showed that metallothionein (MT) content, oxidative damage (8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine content, malondialdehyde content), antioxidant power (total antioxidant power, peroxidase activity) had a great influence on content and toxicity of Cd bioaccumulated in the larvae. The degree of oxidative damage was reduced in the larvae with exogenous VE pretreatments. This variation can be explained by their changed MT content and increased antioxidant power because of exogenous VE. These results reveal the roles of VE in insects defense against Cd exposure and provide a new option for the prevention and therapy of damage caused by Cd exposure.

ABSTRACT

Using the theoretical perspective of market stakeholders, we analyze the impact of external innovations from upstream enterprises, downstream enterprises, and competitors on the exports of private enterprises. By using data from the China Industrial Enterprises Database, we find that external innovations from upstream suppliers, downstream customers and horizontal competitors show positive impacts on the export propensity, intensity and scale for private enterprises. The results of a heterogeneity analysis indicate that the positive relationships between the external innovations of stakeholders and the exports of private enterprises are stable in different factor-intensive industries. In addition, while the exports of private enterprises are positively correlated with their external innovations in the eastern and central regions, this relationship is not significant in the western region. Further, the mechanism analysis confirms that enterprise innovation played an important mediating role for the external innovations of stakeholders to promote the exports of private enterprises. This study provides useful policy implications for enhancing the export competitiveness of private enterprises.

ABSTRACT

We show here the first example of the large-scale surface decoration of a macroscopic and porous monolith with dissimilar micropatches. Branched polyethylenimine (PEI) is alkylated with poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), leading to a reverse-micelle-like dendritic amphiphile of PEI@PPG. Peralkylation and partial quaternization of the residual amino groups of PEI@PPG produces a cationic dendritic amphiphile of PEI-N+@PPG. The two dendritic amphiphiles jointly stabilize a water-in-oil high-internal-phase emulsion to prepare open-cellular monoliths of macroscopic size, with the monolith pore surface dictated by the cationic and neutral dendritic amphiphiles. The amino groups of the neutral amphiphile are further derivatized into anionic dithiocarbamates. The resulting monolith, along with the dissimilar functional patches on the surface, simultaneously eliminates multiple anionic and cationic micropollutants from water to very low residues, and affords the pH-triggered sequential release. Our strategy of using dissimilar dendritic amphiphiles rather than block copolymers as surface building blocks can confer the resulting surface with robust and predesigned microenvironments besides the conventional coacervate structure, and thus can afford more functions.
