ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQL) and related influencing factors in elderly patients. METHODS: A survey was conducted on a random probability sample of 250 elderly patients aged 55 years and over. The measures included the Chinese version of GOHAI, self-rated oral health, satisfaction with oral health and satisfaction with life. Socio-demographic and clinical information were collected. Multiple regression was used to analyze the related influencing factors. RESULTS: Mean GOHAI scores of the sample was 12.26 +/- 7.67. Multiple regression equation was established. GOHAI scores = -6.477 + 0.309 x self-ratings of oral health +0.164 x number of missing teeth +0.237 x satisfaction with oral health +0.127 x satisfaction with life. The R square of the equation was 0.423. CONCLUSIONS: Self-rated oral health, number of missing teeth, satisfaction with oral health and satisfaction with life are important variables influencing oral health-related quality of life in elderly patients.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical effect of repair of lateral root canal perforation with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). METHODS: 18 teeth with root canal perforation were selected. The root canals were shaped and cleaned, and then obturated with gutta-percha before or after MTA was used to repair the perforation. RESULTS: The postoperative X-ray films showed that the perforation of 17 teeth was repaired well, except one tooth with large and infected perforation. 10 cases showed a little over-filling of MTA. 16 patients were recalled and declared their teeth to be asymptomatic. The recall radiographs indicated that the apical radiolucent areas of teeth with pre-existing apical lesion decreased apparently or disappeared completely. No new radiolucency was found. CONCLUSIONS: MTA is effective in treatment of teeth with root canal perforation, even though the material is over-filled. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To establish a method for culturing dental follicle cells of rat and observe the growth characteristics of the cultured cells in vitro. METHODS: Dental follicle and associated enamel organs were dissected from the first and second mandibular molars of 6-7-day-old rats, and then cultured in vitro. Purified dental follicle cells derived from the third or the fourth passage cells were utilized in the following experiments. The shape and ultrastructure of dental follicle cells were observed by light-microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Immunocytochemistry was used to detect the expression of vimentin, type I collagen and fibronectin. RESULTS: The cultured cells were fibroblastic in shape, elongate with processes, and transmission electron microscopy revealed that they contained electron-dense granules, an abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum, but did not form desmosomes. Vimentin, type I collagen and fibronectin were present in dental follicle cell. CONCLUSION: The dental follicle cells of rat could be successfully cultured in vitro and the cultured cells had the same characteristics of dental follicle cells of normal rat.
