ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: T2-weighted increased signal intensity (ISI) is commonly recognized as a sign of more severe spinal cord lesions, usually accompanied by worse neurological deficits and possibly worse postoperative neurological recovery. The combined approach could achieve better decompression and better neurological recovery for multilevel degenerative cervical myelopathy (MDCM). The choice of surgical approach for MDCM with intramedullary T2-weighted ISI remains disputed. This study aimed to compare the neurological outcomes of posterior and one-stage combined posteroanterior approaches for MDCM with T2-weighted ISI. METHODS: A total of 83 consecutive MDCM patients with confirmed ISI with at least three intervertebral segments operated between 2012 and 2014 were retrospectively enrolled. Preoperative demographic, radiological and clinical condition variables were collected, and neurological conditions were evaluated by the Japanese Orthopedic Assessment score (JOA) and Neck Disability Index (NDI). Propensity score matching analysis was conducted to produce pairs of patients with comparable preoperative conditions from the posterior-alone and combined groups. Both short-term and mid-term surgical outcomes were evaluated, including the JOA recovery rate (JOARR), NDI improvements, complications, and reoperations. RESULTS: A total of 83 patients were enrolled, of which 38 and 45 patients underwent posterior surgery alone and one-stage posteroanterior surgery, respectively. After propensity score matching, 38 pairs of comparable patients from the posterior and combined groups were matched. The matched groups presented similar preoperative clinical and radiological features and the mean follow-up duration were 111.6 ± 8.9 months. The preoperative JOA scores of the posterior and combined groups were 11.5 ± 2.2 and 11.1 ± 2.3, respectively (p = 0.613). The combined group presented with prolonged surgery duration(108.8 ± 28.0 and 186.1 ± 47.3 min, p = 0.028) and greater blood loss(276.3 ± 139.1 and 382.1 ± 283.1 ml, p<0.001). At short-term follow-up, the combined group presented a higher JOARR than the posterior group (posterior group: 50.7%±46.6%, combined group: 70.4%±20.3%, p = 0.024), while no significant difference in JOARR was observed between the groups at long-term follow-up (posterior group: 49.2%±48.5%, combined group: 59.6%±47.6%, p = 0.136). No significant difference was found in the overall complication and reoperation rates. CONCLUSIONS: For MDCM patients with ISI, both posterior and one-stage posteroanterior approaches could achieve considerable neurological alleviations in short-term and long-term follow-up. With greater surgical trauma, the combined group presented better short-term JOARR but did not show higher efficacy in long-term neurological function preservation in patients with comparable preoperative conditions.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM: The klotho protein, a multifunctional protein, has been shown to be associated with a wide range of endocrine diseases and has been linked to thyroid tumourigenesis. However, the relationship between serum klotho levels and thyroid hormones remains poorly understood. This study aimed to explore the correlation between serum klotho levels and thyroid hormones. METHODS: Data was obtained from the NHANES cycles 2007-2008, 2009-2010, and 2011-2012. A total of 4674 participants were recruited for this study. Statistical analysis was using multiple linear regression analyses, and restricted cubic spline plots (RCS) to investigate the association between serum klotho levels and serum levels of thyroid hormones. RESULTS: In the unadjusted covariate model, ln(klotho) significantly positively correlated with tT3, tT4, fT3, tT4/fT4, and tT3/fT3 (all P<0.01) and negatively correlated with TSH, tT4/tT3, and fT4/fT3 (all P<0.05). Furthermore, tT3, tT4, fT3and tT3/fT3 (P < 0.05) were still significant in the adjusted model. And it is worth noting that there is an approximately L-shaped nonlinear relationship between ln(klotho) and fT3,tT3 with a cut-off point of 6.697 (P-non-linear < 0.05). The stratification analysis showed gender and iodine level differences in the relationship between serum Klotho levels and thyroid hormones. CONCLUSION: There is an L-shaped nonlinear relationship between ln(klotho) and fT3, tT3, suggesting that klotho could be involved in the physiological regulation of thyroid function.

ABSTRACT

The innate lymphoid cell (ILC) family is composed of heterogeneous innate effector and helper immune cells that preferentially reside in tissues where they promote tissue homeostasis. In cancer, they have been implicated in driving both pro- and anti-tumor responses. This apparent dichotomy highlights the need to better understand differences in the ILC composition and phenotype within different tumor types that could drive seemingly opposite anti-tumor responses. Here, we characterized the frequency and phenotype of various ILC subsets in melanoma metastases and primary epithelial ovarian tumors. We observed high PD-1 expression on ILC subsets isolated from epithelial ovarian tumor samples, while ILC populations in melanoma samples express higher levels of LAG-3. In addition, we found that the frequency of cytotoxic ILCs and NKp46+ILC3 in tumors positively correlates with monocytic cells and conventional type 2 dendritic cells, revealing potentially new interconnected immune cell subsets in the tumor microenvironment. Consequently, these observations may have direct relevance to tumor microenvironment composition and how ILC subset may influence anti-tumor immunity.

ABSTRACT

Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) begins with premature activation of enzymes, promoted by the immune system, triggering a potential systemic inflammatory response that leads to organ failure with increased mortality and a bleak prognosis. Interleukin-22 (IL-22) is a cytokine that may have a significant role in SAP. IL-22, a member of the IL-10 cytokine family, has garnered growing interest owing to its potential tissue-protective properties. Recently, emerging research has revealed its specific effects on pancreatic diseases, particularly SAP. This paper provides a review of the latest knowledge on the role of IL-22 and its viability as a therapeutic target in SAP.

ABSTRACT

Improving measurement accuracy is the core issue with surface acoustic wave (SAW) micro-force sensors. An electrode transducer can stimulate not only the SAW but also the bulk acoustic wave (BAW). A portion of the BAW can be picked up by the receiving transducer, leading to an unwanted or spurious signal. This can harm the device's frequency response characteristics, thereby potentially reducing the precision of the micro-force sensor's measurements. This paper examines the influence of anisotropy on wave propagation, and it also performs a phase-matching analysis between interdigital transducers (IDTs) and bulk waves. Two solutions are shown to reduce the influence of BAW for SAW micro sensors, which are arranged with acoustic absorbers at the ends of the substrate and in grooving in the piezoelectric substrate. Three different types of sensors were manufactured, and the test results showed that the sidelobes of the SAW micro-force sensor could be effectively inhibited (3.32 dB), thereby enhancing the sensitivity and performance of sensor detection. The SAW micro-force sensor manufactured using the new process was tested and the following results were obtained: the center frequency was 59.83 MHz, the fractional bandwidth was 1.33%, the range was 0-1000 mN, the linearity was 1.02%, the hysteresis was 0.59%, the repeatability was 1.11%, and the accuracy was 1.34%.

ABSTRACT

Autologous chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy presents promising treatment outcomes for various cancers. However, its potential is restrained by unique supply chain challenges, including dynamic patient health conditions and extended turnaround time. These challenges often lead to missed optimal treatment windows, impeding the effective delivery of life-saving treatments. This article presents SimPAC (simulation-based decision support for Patient-centric manufacturing of autologous cell therapies). SimPAC is designed to model and incorporate real-time patient health conditions into the supply chain decisions of autologous chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy. SimPAC integrates system dynamics and agent-based simulation techniques, facilitating the adaptation of manufacturing processes and production schedules based on real-time patient health conditions. SimPAC can model various patient disease progressions using parametric functions, nonparametric functions, or tabular data. Additionally, SimPAC offers easy configuration options to model various cell therapy supply chains. We provide two case studies to demonstrate the capabilities of SimPAC and highlight the benefits of patient-centric manufacturing, including improved survival rates and potential economic advantages. However, while the benefits are significant, our study also emphasizes the importance of balancing improved patient outcomes, economic viability and ethical considerations in the context of personalized medicine. SimPAC can be used to explore applications of this approach to diverse therapeutic contexts and supply chain configurations.

Background: As a marker of the GABAergic system, the expression of glutamate decarboxylase 1 (GAD1) is mainly restricted to the central nervous system. Emerging studies have shown that aberrant expression of GAD1 in tumor tissues may promote tumor cell growth. The role of GAD1 in the development of osteosarcoma (OS) remains unclear, so this study sought to investigate the expression status of GAD1 and the effect of its specific inhibitor 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) on OS. Methods: The R2 database was used to analyze the relationship between the expression of GAD1 and clinical prognosis in OS patients. Immunohistochemistry was used to compare the expression profile of GAD1 between OS and matched neighboring tissues. The potential antitumor effects of 3-MPA on cell viability, colony formation and the cell cycle were examined. Moreover, the in vivo effect of 3-MPA on tumor growth was investigated using tumor-bearing nude mice. Results: The expression level of GAD1 was aberrantly upregulated in OS tissues, but almost no expression of GAD1 was found in matched neighboring tissues. Western blotting analyses showed upregulation of GAD1 in OS cells compared to human osteoblast cells. In vitro and in vivo, 3-MPA significantly suppressed the growth of OS. Regarding the mechanism, 3-MPA inhibited ß-catenin and cyclin D1 in OS cells, thereby inactivating the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. Conclusions: OS displays increased expression of the GABAergic neuronal marker GAD1, and 3-MPA significantly reduces OS growth by inhibiting the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway.

BACKGROUND: Chest deformity is a potential complication associated with auricular reconstruction using autologous costal cartilage. The impact of the incision size employed for costal cartilage harvesting on chest deformities remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the incision size used for harvesting costal cartilage and the occurrence of chest deformities. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent ear reconstruction using autologous costal cartilage between June 2021 and September 2022. The patients were categorized into two groups based on the size of the costal cartilage incision: large and small. Chest computed tomography (CT) was performed 18-24 months postoperatively, followed by three-dimensional color map quantification to assess the degree of asymmetry of the chest surface. Subsequently, quantitative data analysis was performed to compare the extent of chest asymmetry between the large- and small-incision groups. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was used to assess patient satisfaction with chest morphology. RESULTS: This study included 62 patients, with an equal distribution of 31 in each group. The mean asymmetry value of the small and large incision groups was -3.15 ± 1.88 and -5.27 ± 3.63, respectively. Moreover, the mean VAS score for the small and large incision groups was 7.48 ± 0.72 and 5.09 ± 0.94, respectively. Statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Small incision costal cartilage harvesting can effectively alleviate the severity of chest deformities and significantly enhance patient satisfaction. Background: Data on viral kinetics and variants affecting the duration of viral shedding were limited. Our objective was to determine viral shedding in distinct severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 variants, including Omicron BA.4/5 and BF.7, and to identify the relevant influencing factors. Methods: We carried out a longitudinal cohort study at Beijing Xiaotangshan Fangcang shelter hospital from May to June 2022 (Omicron BA.4/5) and from November to December 2022 (Omicron BF.7). Nucleocapsid protein (N) and open reading frame (ORF) genes were considered as the target genes of the reverse transcription PCR. The daily results of cycle threshold (CT), including lowest ORF1ab-CT values for days 1-3 post-hospitalisation and lowest N-CT values for days 1-3 post-hospitalisation (CT3minN) and demographic and clinical characteristics were collected. Results: 1433 patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were recruited from the Fangcang shelter hospital, in which 278 patients were diagnosed with Omicron BA.4/5 and 1155 patients with Omicron BF.7. Patients with BF.7 infection showed a longer duration of viral shedding. The duration of viral shedding was associated with the variants age, alcohol use, the severity of COVID-19 and CT3minN. Moreover, the nomogram had excellent accuracy in predicting viral shedding. Conclusions: Our results indicated that patients with Omicron BF.7 had a longer period of contagiousness than those with BA.4/5. The duration of viral shedding was affected by a variety of factors and the nomogram may become an applicable clinical instrument to predict viral shedding. Furthermore, we developed a new COVID-19 viral shedding predicting model that can accurately predict the duration of viral shedding for COVID-19, and created a user-friendly website to apply this prediction model (https://puh3.shinyapps.io/CVSP_Model/).

BACKGROUND: Femoral neck fractures (FNFs) in young adults are usually caused by high-energy trauma, and their treatment remains a challenging issue for orthopedic surgeons. The quality of reduction is considered an important factor in improving the poor prognosis of patients with FNFs. In recent years, positive buttress closed reduction technique has received widespread attention in the treatment of FNFs. This comprehensive literature review is designed to encapsulate the impacts of both non-anatomic and anatomic reduction on the biomechanical stability, clinical outcomes, and postoperative complications in the management of FNFs, conjecture the efficacy of positively braced reduction techniques and provide a thorough summarization of the clinical outcomes. METHODS: In this literature review, we have examined all clinical and biomechanical studies related to the treatment of FNFs using non-anatomical reduction or positive and negative buttress reduction. PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Embase Library databases were searched systematically for studies published before September 1, 2023. Published literature on fracture reduction techniques for treating FNFs was reviewed. In addition, we evaluated the included literature using the MINORs tool. RESULTS: Although the "arch bridge" structure formed by the positive buttress reduction technique improved the support to the cortical bone and provided a more stable biomechanical structure, no significant differences were noted in the clinical efficacy and incidence of postoperative complications between the positive buttress reduction and anatomical reduction. CONCLUSION: Positive buttress reduction is an effective treatment method for young patients with FNFs. When facing difficult-to-reduce FNF, positive buttress reduction should be considered first, followed by anatomical reduction. However, negative buttress reduction should be avoided.

ABSTRACT

This research investigates the formation mechanism of soot and particulate matter during the pyrolysis and gasification of waste derived from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in a laboratory scale drop tube furnace. Compared with CO2 gasification atmosphere, more ultrafine particles (PM0.2, aerodynamic diameter less than 0.2 µm) were generated in N2 atmosphere at 1200℃, which were mainly composed of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), graphitic carbonaceous soot and volatile alkali salts. High reaction temperatures promote the formation of hydrocarbon gaseous products and their conversion to PAHs, which ultimately leads to the formation of soot particles. The soot particles generated by waste derived from MSW pyrolysis and gasification both have high specific surface area and well-developed pore structure. Compared with pyrolysis, the soot generated by gasification of waste derived from MSW had smaller size and higher proportion of inorganic components. The higher pyrolysis temperature led to the collapse of the mesoporous structure of submicron particles, resulting in a decrease in total pore volume and an increase in specific surface area. Innovatively, this research provides an explanation for the effect of reaction temperature/ CO2 on the formation pathways and physicochemical properties of soot and fine particulate matter.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: Rosacea is an inflammatory skin disease with immune and vascular dysfunction. Although there are multiple treatment strategies for rosacea, the clinical outcomes are unsatisfactory. MAIN METHODS: Combining transcriptome data and the Connectivity Map database quercetin was identified as a novel candidate for rosacea. Next, the therapeutic efficacy of quercetin was substantiated through proteomic analyses, in vivo experiments, and in vitro assays. Additionally, the utilization of DARTS, molecular docking and experimental verification revealed the therapeutic mechanisms of quercetin. KEY FINDINGS: Treatment with quercetin resulted in the following effects: (i) it effectively ameliorated rosacea-like features by reducing immune infiltration and angiogenesis; (ii) it suppressed the expression of inflammatory mediators in HaCaT cells and HDMECs; (iii) it interacted with p65 and ICAM-1 directly, and this interaction resulted in the repression of NF-κB signal and ICAM-1 expression in rosacea. SIGNIFICANCE: We show for the first time that quercetin interacted with p65 and ICAM-1 directly to alleviated inflammatory and vascular dysfunction, suggesting quercetin is a novel, promising therapeutic candidate for rosacea.

ABSTRACT

NK cells have been shown to exhibit inflammatory and immunoregulatory functions in a variety of healthy and diseased settings. In the context of chronic viral infection and cancer, distinct NK cell populations that inhibit adaptive immune responses have been observed. To understand how these cells arise and further characterize their immunosuppressive role, we examined in vitro conditions that could polarize human NK cells into an inhibitory subset. TGF-ß1 has been shown to induce regulatory T cells in vitro and in vivo; we therefore investigated if TGF-ß1 could also induce immunosuppressive NK-like cells. First, we found that TGF-ß1/IL-15, but not IL-15 alone, induced CD103+CD49a+ NK-like cells from peripheral blood NK cells, which expressed markers previously associated with inhibitory CD56+ innate lymphoid cells, including high expression of GITR and CD101. Moreover, supernatant from ascites collected from patients with ovarian carcinoma also induced CD103+CD49a+ NK-like cells in vitro in a TGF-ß-dependent manner. Interestingly, TGF-ß1/IL-15-induced CD103+CD56+ NK-like cells suppressed autologous CD4+ T cells in vitro by reducing absolute number, proliferation, and expression of activation marker CD25. Collectively, these findings provide new insight into how NK cells may acquire an inhibitory phenotype in TGF-ß1-rich environments.

Background: Oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide because existing treatments are often insufficient. Therefore, new, reliable biomarkers must be identified. CTSL overexpression is closely associated with tumour progression and poor prognosis. However, the role and mechanism of CTSL as an oncogene in ESCC remain unclear. Methods: Genome-wide association study (GWAS) data were used for Mendelian randomization analysis to investigate the possible relationships between CTSL and ESCC. The correlation between CTSL expression and prognosis was analysed using GEO, TCGA, and GEPIA data. We compared CTSL expression among the cell types using single-cell sequencing. Correlations between CTSL and the tumour microenvironment, immune cell infiltration, tumour mutational load, immunological checkpoints, and treatment sensitivity in patients with ESCC were investigated. Finally, using mouse models and cellular investigations, we assessed the effects of CTSL on the growth, apoptosis, and metastasis of ESCC tumour cells. Results: CTSL was overexpressed in ESCC and correlated with prognosis. We also discovered its close association with cell immunity, especially with tumour-associated macrophages and immune checkpoints in the tumour microenvironment. CTSL may play a key role in ESCC development by affecting M2 macrophage polarisation. CTSL and the M2 macrophage marker genes showed significant positive correlations. Mendelian randomization analysis confirmed a relationship between CTSL and ESCC. Finally, our in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that CTSL promoted the proliferation and migration of ESCC cells, validating our bioinformatic analysis. Conclusion: CTSL emerged as a crucial gene in ESCC that influences patient prognosis and immunity, particularly in association with M2 macrophages. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Lobule transposition, a common procedure in auricle reconstruction, has been successfully performed over the past few decades. However, the transposition methods for unilateral microtia with evident asymmetry of bilateral earlobe positions still remain a challenge. The objective of this study was to investigate the application of prograde transposition for anteriorly low-set earlobes. METHOD: A total of 25 patients with lobule-type microtia with anteriorly low-set residual earlobe underwent prograde transposition during auricle reconstruction between 2020 and 2022. The post-operative earlobe aesthetic assessment and patient satisfaction were evaluated, and the data on any complications that occurred when followed-up were collected. This study provides a comprehensive analysis and summary of the techniques used in earlobe transposition for auricular reconstruction. RESULTS: The patients with evident asymmetry between the residual and healthy earlobes were usually concomitant with hemifacial microsomia and the residual ear was located in the anterior and lower region. No instances of flap necrosis, hematoma, or wound dehiscence were observed following auricular reconstruction. The mean aesthetic score of the auricle was 3.52, with 23 patients attaining good or excellent aesthetic outcomes. The mean Visual Analog Scale satisfaction score was 3.68, with 24 patients reporting relative satisfaction or satisfaction. CONCLUSION: The prograde transposition of anteriorly low-set earlobe in lobule-type microtia reconstruction can effectively ensure adequate blood supply, enhance aesthetic appearance, and significantly improve patient satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

Base excision is a crucial DNA repair process mediated by endonuclease IV in nucleotide excision. In Chlamydia pneumoniae, CpendoIV is the exclusive AP endonuclease IV, exhibiting DNA replication error-proofreading capabilities, making it a promising target for anti-chlamydial drug development. Predicting the structure of CpendoIV, molecular docking with DNA was performed, analyzing complex binding sites and protein surface electrostatic potential. Comparative structural studies were conducted with E. coli EndoIV and DNA complex containing AP sites.CpendoIV was cloned, expressed in E. coli, and purified via Ni-NTA chelation and size-exclusion chromatography. Low NaCl concentrations induced aggregation during purification, while high concentrations enhanced purity.CpendoIV recognizes and cleaving AP sites on dsDNA, and Zn2+ influences the activity. Crystallization was achieved under 8% (v/v) Tacsimate pH 5.2, 25% (w/v) polyethylene glycol 3350, and 1.91 Å resolution X-ray diffraction data was obtained at 100 K. This research is significant for provides a deeper understanding of CpendoIV involvement in the base excision repair process, offering insights into Chlamydia pneumoniae.

ABSTRACT

There are numerous defects existing on the surface and grain boundary of perovskite, which adversely affect the performance and stability of perovskite solar cell devices. Systematic first-principles calculations show that the I vacancy (VI), Pb vacancy (VPb), Pb-I antisite (PbI), and I-Pb antisite (IPb) defects can significantly affect the electronic properties of the surface of formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI3); in particular the VPb, PbI and IPb surface defects can introduce defect energy levels in the band gap. Tetrahexylammonium iodide (THAI) that is strongly adsorbed on the (1 0 0) surface of FAPbI3 by forming Pb-I coordination bonds and I⋯H hydrogen bonds could eliminate or reduce the defect states near the band edge or in the band gap by transferring electrons between THAI and the surface of FAPbI3. In particular, the defect states introduced by VPb could be completely eliminated after the adsorption of THAI. This study shows an in-depth understanding of the influence of defects on the electronic properties of the surface of FAPbI3, as well as the passivation mechanism of organic salts on the surface defects of perovskite.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the malignant tumor with the highest incidence rate and the heaviest disease burden in China. In recent years, lung cancer has shown a high incidence trend, seriously affecting the health of the population. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of lung cancer incidence in 2019 and the trend of incidence rate from 2010-2019 in the tumor registration area of Gansu province, in order to provide a reference basis for the development of lung cancer prevention and control strategies in Gansu province. METHODS: By analyzing the cases of lung cancer incidence in the tumor registration area of Gansu province in 2019, we calculated the incidence rate, medium incidence rate, world incidence rate and other related indexes; we used Joinpoint to calculate the annual percentage change (APC) for trend analysis. RESULTS: In 2019, a total of 3757 new cases of lung cancer were reported in Gansu province, accounting for 14.96% of all new malignant tumors. The incidence rate, medium incidence rate and world incidence rate and world rate of lung cancer were 40.52/105, 25.78/105, 25.86/105; and the cumulative rate of 0-74 years old, and the truncation rate of 35-64 years old were 3.23%, 40.03/105, respectively. The incidence of lung cancer rises with age, and is high in the age group of 40 years and above, and the incidence peaks in the male and female populations in the group of 75 years and above, and the group of 80 years and above, respectively. The crude incidence rate of lung cancer in the tumor registration area of Gansu province from 2010-2019 showed an overall increasing trend, and the rate of increase was relatively fast, with an APC 5.39% (P<0.05); Separately, according to gender, urban and rural areas, the incidence of lung cancer in all populations showed an increasing trend, and the APC of male, female, urban and rural populations were 4.98%, 6.39%, 6.26%, and 4.64%, respectively (all P<0.05). According to the trend analysis of lung cancer incidence rate by age group, only lung cancer incidence in the age group of 65 years and above increased at an annual average rate of 4.15% (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The incidence rate of lung cancer in the tumor registration area of Gansu province from 2010 to 2019 shows a rising trend year by year, and there are differences in the incidence of lung cancer in people of different genders, regions and age groups, so comprehensive prevention and control work should be carried out for the key populations of lung cancer incidence.

BACKGROUND: Bone mineral density is an important indicator of osteoporosis, and its variation with volatile organic compounds exposure has rarely been studied. However, the relationship between chloroform (an essential volatile organic compounds component) and bone mineral density remains unclear. Consequently, we aimed to explore the relationship between chloroform alone and bone mineral density or bone mineral content. METHODS: Herein, 2,553 individuals aged 18 and above from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) in 2009-2010, 2013-2014, and 2017-2020, were included. We employed two independent t-tests and multi-linear regression models to statistically assess the relationship between chloroform exposure and BMD/BMC in the spine and femoral area. RESULTS: A "V"-shaped correlation between chloroform exposure and bone mineral density or bone mineral content (BMD/BMC) was observed in the unadjusted model, particularly in the Ward's triangle and femoral neck as a whole. A negative correlation was specifically observed for the Ward's triangle BMD/BMC and L4 BMD/BMC. On the other hand, in the adjusted model, a dominantly negative correlation between the L4 BMC and chloroform exposure was observed over a range of exposure levels. The subgroup analysis revealed a negative correlation between chloroform concentrations and BMC in the femur and spine, especially in women and the 65-80 age population. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed a "V" shaped correlation between chloroform and BMD/BMC of the femur and spine in U.S. adults. This finding highlights the fact that prolonged exposure to chloroform may cause the changes in BMD/BMC.
