ABSTRACT

Anisotropy is a prevailing property in most substances in the real world. The thermal conductivity characteristic of anisotropy must be determined for utilizing geothermal resources and assessing battery performances. Most core samples were primarily obtained by drilling and intended to be cylindrical in shape, with the cores resembling quantities of familiar batteries. Although Fourier's law could be used to measure the axial thermal conductivity of square or cylindrical samples, there is still a need to develop a new method to measure the radial thermal conductivity of cylindrical samples and evaluate their anisotropy. Thus, we established a testing method for cylindrical samples using the theory of complex variable functions following the heat conduction equation and implemented a numerical simulation to determine the difference between this method and typical ones via a finite element model for various samples. Results show that the method could perfectly gauge the radial thermal conductivity of cylindrical samples with more powerful availability.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study are to evaluate the high-temperature performance of polymer-modified asphalt and asphalt mixtures, and to investigate if the standard technical indexes are useful in the performance evaluation of the polymer-modified asphalt. There are four typically used polymer-modified asphalt types employed in the study. The standard high-temperature rheological test, such as the temperature sweep test, was used to express the high-temperature performance of the polymer-modified asphalt. Also, considering the non-Newtonian fluid properties of the polymer-modified asphalt, the multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) and zero-shear viscosity (ZSV) tests were employed for the characterizations. Besides, based on the mixture design of SMA-13, the high temperature of the polymer-modified asphalt mixture was evaluated via Marshall stability and rutting tests. The test results concluded that the ranking of the four kinds of polymer-modified asphalt was different in various laboratory tests. The TB-APAO has the best technical indexes in MSCR and ZSV tests, while the WTR-APAO performed best in the temperature sweep test. In addition, the correlation between the polymer-modified asphalt and the asphalt mixture was very poor. Thus, the present standard technical indexes for the profoundly polymer-modified asphalt mixtures are no longer suitable.

ABSTRACT

Glucose is the main source of energy and carbon in organisms and plays a central role in metabolism and cellular homeostasis. However, the sensitive fluctuation of glucose in living cells is difficult to monitor. Thus, we developed a series of ratiometric, highly responsive, single fluorescent protein-based glucose sensors of wide dynamic range by combining a circularly permuted yellow fluorescent protein with a bacterial periplasmic glucose/galactose-binding protein. We used these sensors to monitor glucose transport in living Escherichia coli cells, and found that the cells take up glucose within 10 min to maintain physiological glucose levels, and observed the differences in glucose uptake and glucose metabolism between wild-type and Mlc knockout cells. These sensors can be specific and simple tools for glucose detection in vitro and non-invasive tools for real-time monitoring of glucose metabolism in vivo.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the information acquired through the four diagnostic methods of traditional Chinese medicine in patients with bronchial asthma, and to classify the syndrome types. METHODS: Four hundred and thirty patients with bronchial asthma were randomly investigated. The information acquired through the four diagnostic methods was recorded and the database was established by Amos software, and then the data were analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). RESULTS: After analyzing the data with 4 factors, 5 factors and 6 factors, we found that the results of CFA with 6 factors were in accordance with clinical practical experience. CONCLUSION: According to the results of CFA with 6 factors and with the standard regression coefficient 0.4 as primary and secondary critical points, the syndromes in patients with bronchial asthma can be classified into 5 types, which are syndromes of cold fluid retained in lung, phlegm-heat obstructing lung, wind-phlegm blocking lung, qi deficiency of lung and kidney and qi deficiency of spleen.
