ABSTRACT

Introduction: This paper aims to explore the intersection of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and public health within the context of digital platforms. Specifically, the paper explores the impact of digital platforms on the sustainable development practices of enterprises, seeking to comprehend how these platforms influence the implementation of environmental protection policies, resource management, and social responsibility initiatives. Methods: To assess the impact of digital platforms on corporate environmental behavior, we conducted a questionnaire survey targeting employees in private enterprises. This survey aimed to evaluate the relationship between the adoption of digital platforms and the implementation of environmental protection policies and practices. Results: Analysis of the survey responses revealed a significant positive correlation between the use of digital platforms and the environmental protection behavior of enterprises (r=0.523;p<0.001), Moreover, the presence of innovative environmental protection technologies on these platforms was found to positively influence the enforcement of environmental policies, with a calculated impact ratio of (a∗b/c=55.31%). An intermediary analysis highlighted that environmental innovation technology plays a mediating role in this process. Additionally, adjustment analysis showed that enterprises of various sizes and industries respond differently to digital platforms, indicating the need for tailored environmental policies. Discussion: These findings underscore the pivotal role of digital platforms in enhancing CSR efforts and public health by fostering improved environmental practices among corporations. The mediating effect of environmental innovation technologies suggests that digital platforms not only facilitate direct environmental actions but also enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of such initiatives through technological advances. The variability in response by different enterprises points to the importance of customizable strategies in policy formulation. By offering empirical evidence of digital platforms' potential to advance CSR and public health through environmental initiatives, this paper contributes to the ongoing dialogue on sustainable development goals. It provides practical insights for enterprises and policy implications for governments striving to craft more effective environmental policies and strategies.

ABSTRACT

Sepsis-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a devastating clinically severe respiratory disorder, and no effective therapy is available. Melatonin (MEL), an endogenous neurohormone, has shown great promise in alleviating sepsis-induced ARDS, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. Using a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated mouse alveolar macrophage cell line (MH-S) model, we found that MEL significantly inhibited NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation in LPS-treated macrophages, whereas this inhibitory effect of MEL was weakened in MH-S cells transfected with glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) overexpressing lentivirus. Further experiments showed that MEL downregulated GLUT1 via inhibition of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1α). Notably, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a donor of reactive oxygen species (ROS), significantly increased the level of intracellular ROS and inhibited the regulatory effect of MEL on the HIF-1α/GLUT1 pathway. Interestingly, the protective effect of MEL was attenuated after the knockdown of melatonin receptor 1A (MT1) in MH-S cells. We also confirmed in vivo that MEL effectively downregulated the HIF-1α/GLUT1/NLRP3 pathway in the lung tissue of LPS-treated mice, as well as significantly ameliorated LPS-induced lung injury and improved survival in mice. Collectively, these findings revealed that MEL regulates the activation of the ROS/HIF-1α/GLUT1/NLRP3 pathway in alveolar macrophages via the MT1 receptor, further alleviating sepsis-induced ARDS.

ABSTRACT

In recent decades, Technology and Innovation (TI) have shown tremendous potential for improving agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability. However, the adoption and implementation of TI in the agricultural sector and its impact on the environment remain limited. To gain deeper insights into the significance of TI in enhancing agricultural productivity while maintaining environmental balance, this study investigates 21 agriculture-dependent Asian countries. Two machine learning techniques, LASSO (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) and Elastic-Net, are employed to analyze the data, which is categorized into three regional groups: ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation), and GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council). The findings of this study highlight the heterogeneous nature of technology adoption and its environmental implications across the three country groups. ASEAN countries emerge as proactive adopters of relevant technologies, effectively enhancing agricultural production while simultaneously upholding environmental quality. Conversely, SAARC countries exhibit weaker technology adoption, leading to significant fluctuations in environmental quality, which in turn impact agricultural productivity. Notably, agricultural emissions of N2O (nitrous oxide) and CO2 (carbon dioxide) in SAARC countries show a positive association with agricultural production, while CH4 (methane) emissions have an adverse effect. In contrast, the study reveals a lack of evidence regarding technological adoption in agriculture among GCC countries. Surprisingly, higher agricultural productivity in these countries is correlated with increased N2O emissions. Moreover, the results indicate that deforestation and expansion of cropland contribute to increased agricultural production; however, this expansion is accompanied by higher emissions related to agricultural activities. This research represents a pioneering empirical analysis of the impact of TI and environmental emission gases on agricultural productivity in the three aforementioned country groups. It underscores the imperative of embracing relevant technologies to enhance agricultural output while concurrently ensuring environmental sustainability. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders in formulating strategies to promote sustainable agriculture and technological advancement in the context of diverse regional dynamics.

ABSTRACT

Bioelectrochemical systems with biocathodes constitute a promising means to enhance the biological dechlorination of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) in constructed wetland (CW) sediments. However, the effect of different cathodic potentials on the structure and function of 2,4,6-TCP-reducing biocathode communities in CW sediments is largely unknown. Here, we evaluated the performance and microbial community structure of 2,4,6-TCP-reducing biocathode systems at different cathodic potentials (- 0.5, - 0.7, - 0.9, and - 1.1 V vs. saturated calomel electrode). The dechlorination efficiency of 2,4,6-TCP with the biocathode relatively increased by 16.02%-33.17% compared to that in the open circuit. The highest 2,4,6-TCP dechlorination efficiency (92.34 ± 0.86%) was observed at - 0.7 V in sediment, which may be due to the highest abundance of functional genera (e.g., Pseudomonas, Spirochaeta) at - 0.7 V. Metagenomic analysis provided new insights into the metabolic potential of microorganisms in CW sediments and suggested possible 2,4,6-TCP conversion pathways in sediments. 2,4,6-TCP was gradually dechlorinated to form 4-chlorophenol, followed by a ring-opening step via the activities of chlorophenol reductive dehalogenase and oxygenase (e.g., cprA, tfdB). Interestingly, micro-electrical stimulation enhanced the expression of chlorophenol reductive dehalogenase (cprA). Therefore, our findings at the molecular and gene expression levels provide insights into the effects of different cathodic potentials on the performance and community structure of 2,4,6-TCP-reducing biocathode systems in CW sediments.

ABSTRACT

As marketing tools, nutrition claims (NCs) and health claims (HCs) can be used to convey the nutritional properties and health benefits of food to consumers, but their respective effects on consumers' perceptions of healthier meat products are inconsistent in the literature. Using a physical prototype of omega-3-enriched sausages as a research interest, this paper explores how HCs and NCs differently influence consumers' sensory preferences and willingness to pay (WTP). Sensory tests were carried out among 330 participants, followed by a choice-based conjoint (CBC) experiment to measure consumers' WTP. Results indicate that, in comparison with the uninformed condition, labeling an omega-3 nutrition claim increased consumers' sensory liking for omega-3-enriched sausages in the attributes of appearance and texture. Moreover, consumers were willing to pay more for healthier sausages, but labeling HCs did not significantly improve participants' WTP for omega-3-enriched sausages more than NCs. Hence, HCs did not significantly outperform NCs, when it comes to positively influencing consumers' sensory liking and paying intentions for omega-3-enriched sausages. The findings of this study have implications for the meat industry in developing healthier sausage formulations with greater likelihood of success in the market.

ABSTRACT

Biocathode systems could be used for in-situ bioremediation of chlorophenols (CPs) in constructed wetland (CW) sediments. However, little is known regarding whether or how cathode burial depths affect the dechlorination of CPs in sediments. Here, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP)-dechlorinating biocathode systems were constructed under a cathode potential of - 0.7 V (vs. a saturated calomel electrode, SCE) at three different cathode burial depths (5, 10, and 15 cm). The 2,4,6-TCP removal efficiency and average transformation rate with the biocathode increased by 21.46-36.86% and 14.63-34.88% compared to those in the non-electrode groups. Deeper cathode burial depths enhanced the 2,4,6-TCP dechlorination performance. Furthermore, the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of the sediment decreased with sediment depth and the applied potential created a more favorable redox environment for the enrichment of functional bacteria. Deeper cathode burial depths also promoted the selective enrichment of electro-active and dechlorinating bacteria (e.g., Bacillus and Dehalobacter, respectively). The biocathode thus served as the carrier, electron source, and regulator of functional bacteria to accelerate the transformation of 2,4,6-TCP (2,4,6-TCP → 2,4-dichlorophenol → 4-chlorophenol → phenol) in sediments. These results offer insights into the effects of cathode burial depth on 2,4,6-TCP dechlorination in sediments from a redox environment and microbial community structure standpoint.

ABSTRACT

Although narcissism is an important factor influencing entrepreneurial activity and outcomes, not much research has been conducted on the relationship between narcissism and entrepreneurship. To summarize the current literature on this relationship and provide an agenda for further in-depth research, a systematic review was conducted based on the PRISMA guidelines using Web of Science, Elsevier ScienceDirect, and EBSCO host databases. Accordingly, 33 articles have been identified as being eligible for the final synthesis. The findings of the present study showed, in general, that (1) life history theory, person-environment fit theory (P-E theory), and career choice theory were mostly used to explore the topic of narcissism and entrepreneurial intention, social exchange theory was used to analyze narcissistic entrepreneurs' entrepreneurial motives and attitudes, and upper echelons theory (UET) was applied to research on the relationship between narcissism and entrepreneurial outcomes, (2) Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) and narcissistic sub-dimension of the Dark Triad were frequently used self-report scales among 23 identified empirical studies, and (3) narcissism has both bright and dark sides to entrepreneurial activities and outcomes. While narcissism makes potential entrepreneurs have higher entrepreneurial intentions and greater willingness to take risks, it also prevents entrepreneurs from discovering opportunities, acquiring resources, and learning from failure. Besides, results also showed that relations between narcissism and entrepreneurial intentions and performance are more complex. For a deeper understanding of this complex relations and advancing research on narcissism and entrepreneurship, more research is necessary to explore the relations between narcissism and entrepreneurship-related variables from a temporal perspective and at the team level, examine the relationship between narcissism and entrepreneurship ethics, and investigate the interaction effects of narcissism and other personalities.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication of herpes zoster. Methylene blue (MB) is an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthesis with potentially analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have demonstrated that thoracic paravertebral single MB injection is effective in treating chronic pain. However, there are rare reports of the efficacy of continuous thoracic paravertebral infusion of MB for pain management in PHN patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of continuous thoracic paravertebral infusion of MB on PHN. METHODS: A total of 104 PHN patients were randomly divided into two groups: the control group (continuous thoracic paravertebral infusion of 5% lidocaine in a total volume of 300 ml) and the MB group (continuous thoracic paravertebral infusion of 5% lidocaine plus 0.2% MB in a total volume of 300 ml). All patients were evaluated using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), and medication doses before and after the procedure. The effective treatment rate and adverse complications were recorded 6 months after the procedure. RESULTS: In both groups, the NRS scores, ISI scores, PHQ-9 scores, and rescue medication dosages were significantly decreased at different time points after treatment compared to baseline, while the SF-36 scores were evidently improved at different time points after treatment compared to baseline. Compared with the control group, the MB group had significantly reduced NRS scores, ISI scores, PHQ-9 scores, and rescue medication dosages at each observation time point. Furthermore, the SF-36 scores in the MB group were significantly higher than those in the control group at each observation time point. The total effective treatment rate of the MB group was higher than that of the control group 6 months after the procedure. No severe adverse complications were observed in either group. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound-guided continuous thoracic paravertebral infusion with MB is a safe and effective therapy for PHN. Continuous infusion with MB can significantly reduce pain intensity, improve pain-related depression, increase quality of life, and decrease the amount of rescue medicine with no serious adverse complications.

ABSTRACT

In patients with obstructive jaundice, the cardiovascular system exhibits hypotension and vascular hyporeactivity. Most norepinephrine is taken up through the neuronal norepinephrine transporter (NET), which is implicated in cardiovascular diseases. A previous study demonstrated that pharmacological NET inhibition could increase resting blood pressure. However, the role of NETs in vascular hyporeactivity induced by obstructive jaundice is poorly understood. This study used the NET inhibitor nisoxetine and a rat model of bile duct ligation (BDL) to investigate whether NET is associated with BDL-induced vascular hyporeactivity. Rats were injected with nisoxetine via the tail vein for 7 consecutive days after BDL. Samples of the superior cervical sympathetic ganglion (SCG) and thoracic aortic rings were processed for investigations. Our results showed that NET expression in the SCG was significantly increased after BDL. Nisoxetine prevented the augmentation of NET expression, increased α1-adrenoceptor activation, and enhanced the weakened contractile responses of thoracic aortic rings after BDL. Our study demonstrates that nisoxetine plays a protective role in BDL-induced vascular hyporeactivity through increased α1-adrenoceptor activation in rats.

ABSTRACT

This study explores the effects of a toxic workplace environment (TWE) on employee engagement (EE). Building on conservation of resources (COR) theory and organizational support theory (OST), this study proposed a research model. In this research model, a toxic workplace environment negatively affected employee engagement, directly and indirectly, through organizational support (OS) and employee well-being (EW). In this study, we used a quantitative research approach, and data were collected from 301 workers employed in the small and medium-size enterprises of China. To estimate the proposed relationships of the research model, we used partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM 3.2.2). The results of this study confirmed that a toxic workplace environment has a negative impact on employee engagement. Moreover, the findings of this research confirm that organizational support and employee well-being significantly mediate a toxic workplace environment and employee engagement. The conclusions of this study are as follows: First, the direct relationship between a toxic workplace environment and employee engagement confirms that if employees are working in a toxic environment, they will spread negative feelings among other co-workers. The feelings that come with a toxic workplace environment, i.e., harassment, bullying, and ostracism, can be detrimental and lead to unnecessary stress, burnout, depression, and anxiety among the workers. Second, employee well-being will affect employee behaviors that enhance employee engagement with the work as well as with the organization. Third, organizational support also increases employee engagement with the work as well as with the organization. So, it is also confirmed that when workers perceive the support from the organization, their sense of belonging to the organization is strengthened.

ABSTRACT

The current study examines the relationship between financialization, managers' incentives, and the enterprise's innovation. Based on the principal-agent and incentive theories, this study proposes a research model with two management incentives as moderating variables between financialization and the enterprise's innovation. First, we analyze the direct relationship between financialization and the enterprise's innovation. Second, we examine the moderating effect of managers' equity incentive and compensation incentives on the relationship between entity financialization and the enterprise's innovation in high-tech/non-high-tech enterprises and state-owned and non-state-owned enterprises. This study covers the most recent updated data from both A-share listed companies in the Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchange in China from 2009 to 2019. This study's finding indicates a significant negative impact of entity financialization and the enterprise's innovation. It means that the entity financial has a significant "crowding-out" effect on the enterprise's innovation. This study also confirms that management incentives cannot effectively suppress a "crowding-out" impact of entity financialization on firm innovation because of the principal-agent severe problem in financialization. Finally, considering the heterogeneities of property rights and degrees of dependence on the enterprise's innovation, a "crowding-out" effect of entity financialization on the enterprise's innovation is more significant in high-tech and state-owned enterprises. Managers' equity incentive significantly affects the enterprise's innovation in high-tech enterprises, while the managers' compensation incentive affects the enterprise's innovation in state-owned enterprises. Our study could help the enterprise to improve the company manager's incentive and provide the optimal assets allocation to improve the enterprise's innovation ability. Lastly, this study provides significant policies and recommendations for the public sector high-tech enterprise and private sector high-tech enterprises. Moreover, policies and recommendations are fruitful for the public sector non-high-tech enterprise and private sector non-high-tech enterprise.

ABSTRACT

Macrophages play a key role in the development of sepsis-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Recent evidence has proved that glycolysis plays an important role in regulating macrophage polarization through metabolic reprogramming. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) can alleviate sepsis-induced lung injury and possess potent immunomodulatory and immunosuppressive properties via secreting exosomes. However, it is unknown whether BMSCs-derived exosomes exert their therapeutic effect against sepsis-induced lung injury by inhibiting glycolysis in macrophages. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of exosomes released from BMSCs on acute lung injury induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in mice and explored the possible underlying mechanisms in vitro and in vivo. We found that BMSCs inhibited M1 polarization and promoted M2 polarization in MH-S cells (a murine alveolar macrophage cell line) by releasing exosomes. Further experiments showed that exosomes secreted by BMSCs modulated LPS-treated MH-S cells polarization by inhibiting cellular glycolysis. Moreover, our results showed that BMSCs-derived exosomes down-regulated the expression of several essential proteins of glycolysis via inhibition of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1)α. Finally, a model of LPS-induced ARDS in mice was established, we found that BMSCs-derived exosomes ameliorated the LPS-induced inflammation and lung pathological damage. Meanwhile, we found that intratracheal delivery of BMSCs-derived exosomes effectively down-regulated LPS-induced glycolysis in mice lung tissue. These findings reveal new mechanisms of BMSCs-derived exosomes in regulating macrophage polarization which may provide novel strategies for the prevention and treatment of LPS-induced ARDS.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationships between workplace violence, occupational stress, and sustainable work performance. Multiple dimensions of workplace violence (harassment, mobbing, ostracism, and stalking) were used in this study. A questionnaire survey was used, composed of 48 items with a 5-point Likert scale (1, strongly disagree, to 5, strongly agree). Data were collected from 15 hospitals in the vicinity of Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, Pakistan. The target population of this study consisted of doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff. We distributed 500 questionnaires among the target population. In total, 345 usable questionnaires were returned, resulting in a response rate of 69%. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to test the direct and indirect effects. The results of this study highlight that in both direct and indirect relationships, workplace violence negatively influences sustainable work performance. The findings of this study are as follows: First, harassment reduces employee morale, which consistently lessens employees' work performance. Second, mobbing at the workplace reduces productivity, increases levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and irritability, and increases low work engagement, work absences, and work destruction. Third, ostracism at the workplace reduces motivation among workers and organizations, which reduces work efficiency. Work performance is undermined due to stalking at the workplace because it creates a bad image and brings toxicity among colleagues and peers. Fourth, occupational stress is considered a stigma among employees who are facing stress at the workplace. We can conclude that if employees are happy and healthy, they can be their most productive. So, organizations need to construct a culture where employees can be at their best and shine.

BACKGROUND: This study examined how human resource management (HRM) can directly and indirectly influence sustainable organizational performance (SOP), with organizational innovation (OI) as a mediator. RESEARCH METHODS: For this quantitative study, a 31-item questionnaire was used to collect data on HRM and SOP from 20 Shanghai branches of five Chinese banks. HRM was defined as multidimensional, consisting of employee staffing, staff development, performance management, and compensation and benefits. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM 3.2) was used to estimate the effects. RESULTS: The HRM practices of performance management and compensation and benefits showed a direct and positive influence on SOP. Looking at indirect relationships, all four dimensions of HRM practices were positively related to OI (product, process, and knowledge innovation), which, in turn, was positively related to SOP. Organizational innovation was thus shown to play a mediating role between HRM and SOP. CONCLUSION: The study emphasizes that the banking sector of China consists of many employees who maintain old styles of working, alongside some who attempt to take on the new innovative working mechanisms and engage with staff development programs. This latter group of personnel make a valuable contribution to SOP. Moreover, the effect on organizational dynamics of implementing HRM practices aids in bringing about innovations in processes, products, and knowledge.
