ABSTRACT

To explore the short-term impact of biodegradable organic matter on the activities of different functional microbes in autotrophic partial nitrification granular sludge (PNG),the variations of both nitrogen transformation performance and dissolved oxygen (DO) uptake of PNG were investigated in this study,by carrying out successive batch tests with and without the organics stressing.The results showed that the higher the C/N ratio,the lower the specific nitrite accumulation rate of q(NO2--N).Meanwhile,the increase of heterotrophic bacteria (HeB) activities caused the fast DO uptake by PNG,which could effectively suppress nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) with the low oxygen affinity.When inorganic substrate culture was employed in the following phase,both HeB and NOB showed low activities,with significant increase in q(NO2--N).In short,the adverse effects of biodegradable organic matter on the performance of PNG system were partially reversible,which could benefit to enhance the advantage of ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and improve the stability of partial nitrification reaction.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the expression of Foxa2 in different pathological types of gastric polyps and examine the correlation with cancerous risk. METHODS: According to computerize random number, a total of 2000 patients were selected to receive endoscopic biopsy during November 2011 to October 2012. Tissues were harvested from 170 with gastric polyps and suspicious cancerous lesions and their histological types detected. There were hyperplastic polyps(n = 35), adenomatous polyps(n = 31), fundic gland polyps(n = 42), advanced gastric cancer tissues (n = 32)and normal gastric mucosa tissues (n = 30). ABC immunohistochemical staining and reverse transcription(RT)-PCR were employed to detect the expression of Foxa2 in these different types of tissues. Imagepro plus was used for quantitative and statistical analyses. RESULTS: A low-level expression of Foxa2 was 3.6% ± 1.3% in normal gastric mucosa group. And its expreesion gradually higher in proliferative inflammatory polyp group(33.1% ± 8.0%), adenomatous polyp group (71.4% ± 1.7%) and gastric cancer group(96.3% ± 0.9%, all P < 0.05). Its expression was 35.6% ± 5.6% in fundic gland polyps, similar to that of proliferative inflammatory polyp group (P > 0.05), it was markedly lower than the gastric cancer group (P < 0.05) and higher than the normal gastric mucosa group (P < 0.05). Correlation analyses of clinicopathological parameters showed that no significant correlation existed between its expression and patient gender, age, predilection, Helicobacter. pylori infection or proton pump inhibitor used (all P > 0.05). However, the size of polyps was correlated with Foxa2 (rs = 0.69, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The expression level of Foxa2 in different types of gastric polyps may be used as a clinical predicator of polyps risk.

ABSTRACT

The mandibular first molars mostly have two mesial canals. In this report, two cases of mandibular first molars with three mesial canals are presented. The middle mesial canal was detected under endodontic microscope and further confirmed by cone-beam computed tomography and angled radiography, respectively. The purpose of this paper was to highlight the possibility of an aberrant root canal in a mandibular first molar and to help reduce the failure rates of the dental pulp treatment of the mandibular first molar.

ABSTRACT

Modern grylloblattids are one of the least diverse of the modern insect orders. The thorax changes in morphology might be associated with the changes of the function of the forelegs, wing loss, changes in behavior and adaptation to habitat. As temperature is the main barrier for migration of modern grylloblattids, the range of each species is extremely limited. The potential distribution areas of grylloblattids remain unclear. A second new species of ice crawlers (Insecta: Grylloblattodea), Grylloblattella cheni Bai, Wang et Yang sp. nov., is described from China. The distribution map and key to species of Grylloblattella are given. A comparison of the thorax of extant and extinct Grylloblattodea is presented, with an emphasis on the pronotum using geometric morphometric analysis, which may reflect thorax adaptation and the evolution of Grylloblattodea. Potential global distribution of grylloblattids is inferred. Highly diversified pronota of extinct Grylloblattodea may reflect diverse habitats and niches. The relatively homogeneous pronota of modern grylloblattids might be explained by two hypotheses: synapomorphy or convergent evolution. Most fossils of Grylloblattodea contain an obviously longer meso- and metathorax than prothorax. The length of the meso- and metathorax of modern grylloblattids is normally shorter than the prothorax. This may be associated with the wing loss, which is accompanied by muscle reduction and changes to the thoracic skeleton system. Threats to grylloblattids and several conservation comments are also provided.
