ABSTRACT

Ammonia (NH3) is a carbon-free, hydrogen-rich chemical related to global food safety, clean energy, and environmental protection. As an essential technology for meeting the requirements raised by such issues, NH3 capture has been intensively explored by researchers in both fundamental and applied fields. The four typical methods used are (1) solvent absorption by ionic liquids and their derivatives, (2) adsorption by porous solids, (3) ab-adsorption by porous liquids, and (4) membrane separation. Rooted in the development of advanced materials for NH3 capture, we conducted a coherent review of the design of different materials, mainly in the past 5 years, their interactions with NH3 molecules and construction of transport pathways, as well as the structure-property relationship, with specific examples discussed. Finally, the challenges in current research and future worthwhile directions for NH3 capture materials are proposed.

ABSTRACT

Atopic dermatitis is usually associated with various ocular complications. We report a 21-year-old Chinese male who presented to our ophthalmology clinic with bilateral retinal detachment and cataracts. The patient had a clear medical history of atopic dermatitis, which had been diagnosed eight years earlier and had been treated with loratadine and pimecrolimus. Cataract surgery was performed for both eyes, combined with scleral buckling for the right eye and pars plana vitrectomy for the left eye. During postoperative follow-up, fundus fluorescein angiography showed retinal vasculitis in both eyes and macular edema in the left eye, which coincided with an exacerbation of atopic dermatitis. Macular edema improved after four months of regular dupilumab treatment in the dermatology department. The ocular condition remained stable three years postoperatively.

ABSTRACT

Rice effective panicle is a major trait for grain yield and is affected by both the genetic tiller numbers and the early tillering vigor (ETV) traits to survive environmental adversities. The mechanism behind tiller bud formation has been well described, while the genes and the molecular mechanism underlying rice-regulating ETV traits are unclear. In this study, the candidate genes in regulating ETV traits have been sought by quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping and bulk-segregation analysis by resequencing method (BSA-seq) conjoint analysis using rice backcross inbred line (BIL) populations, which were cultivated as late-season rice of double-cropping rice systems. By QTL mapping, seven QTLs were detected on chromosomes 1, 3, 4, and 9, with the logarithm of the odds (LOD) values ranging from 3.52 to 7.57 and explained 3.23% to 12.98% of the observed phenotypic variance. By BSA-seq analysis, seven QTLs on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 9 were identified using single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and insertions/deletions (InDel) index algorithm and Euclidean distance (ED) algorithm. The overlapping QTL resulting from QTL mapping and BSA-seq analysis was shown in a 1.39 Mb interval on chromosome 4. In the overlap interval, six genes, including the functional unknown genes Os04g0455650, Os04g0470901, Os04g0500600, and ethylene-insensitive 3 (Os04g0456900), sialyltransferase family domain containing protein (Os04g0506800), and ATOZI1 (Os04g0497300), showed the differential expression between ETV rice lines and late tillering vigor (LTV) rice lines and have a missense base mutation in the genomic DNA sequences of the parents. We speculate that the six genes are the candidate genes regulating the ETV trait in rice, which provides a research basis for revealing the molecular mechanism behind the ETV traits in rice.

ABSTRACT

Germline or somatic loss-of-function mutations of fumarate hydratase (FH) predispose patients to an aggressive form of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Since other than tumor resection there is no effective therapy for metastatic FH-deficient RCC, an accurate method for early diagnosis is needed. Although MRI or CT scans are offered, they cannot differentiate FH-deficient tumors from other RCCs. Therefore, finding noninvasive plasma biomarkers suitable for rapid diagnosis, screening, and surveillance would improve clinical outcomes. Taking advantage of the robust metabolic rewiring that occurs in FH-deficient cells, we performed plasma metabolomics analysis and identified 2 tumor-derived metabolites, succinyl-adenosine and succinic-cysteine, as excellent plasma biomarkers for early diagnosis. These 2 molecules reliably reflected the FH mutation status and tumor mass. We further identified the enzymatic cooperativity by which these biomarkers are produced within the tumor microenvironment. Longitudinal monitoring of patients demonstrated that these circulating biomarkers can be used for reporting on treatment efficacy and identifying recurrent or metastatic tumors.

ABSTRACT

Two-dimensional (2D) π-conjugated conductive metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs, 2DπcMOF) with modulated channel sizes and a broad conductivity range have been reported in the last decade. In contrast, the corresponding comparative studies on their effects on chemiresistive sensing performances, which measure the resistive response toward external chemical stimuli, have not yet been reported. In this work, we sought to explore the structure-performance relationships of honeycomb-like 2D π-conjugated cMOF chemiresistive gas sensors with channel sizes less than 2 nm (the mass transport issue) and broad conductivity in the range from ∼10-8 S cm-1 to 1 S cm-1 (the charge transport issue). As a result, we found that the cMOF with a lower conductivity facilitates the much more sensitive response toward the charge transfer of the adsorbed gases (relative increases in resistance: R = 63.5% toward 100 ppm of NH3 for the as prepared Cu-THQ sensor with the conductivity of ∼10-8 S cm-1). Interestingly, the cMOF with a medium channel size (Cu-THHP-THQ) exhibited the fastest response speed in sensing, although it contains H2en2+ as neutralizing counterions in the channels. From the evaluation of the pore size distribution, it is found that the overall porosity (meso- & micro-pores) of cMOFs, rather than the pore size of the honeycomb structure, would determine their sensing speed. When comparing the performance of two different morphologies of nanorods (NRs) and nanosheets (NSs), NRs showed a slower response and extended recovery time, which can be ascribed to the slower gas diffusion in the more extended 1D channel. Altogether, our results demonstrate the first systematic studies on the effect of various structural parameters on the chemiresistive sensor performance of cMOFs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The neoadjuvant chemotherapy is increasingly used in advanced gastric cancer, but the effects on safety and survival are still controversial. The objective of this meta-analysis was to compare the overall survival and short-term surgical outcomes between neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery (NACS) and surgery alone (SA) for locally advanced gastric cancer. METHODS: Databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar) were explored for relative studies from January 2000 to January 2021. The quality of randomized controlled trials and cohort studies was evaluated using the modified Jadad scoring system and the Newcastle-Ottawa scale, respectively. The Review Manager software (version 5.3) was used to perform this meta-analysis. The overall survival was evaluated as the primary outcome, while perioperative indicators and post-operative complications were evaluated as the secondary outcomes. RESULTS: Twenty studies, including 1420 NACS cases and 1942 SA cases, were enrolled. The results showed that there were no significant differences in overall survival (P = 0.240), harvested lymph nodes (P = 0.200), total complications (P = 0.080), and 30-day post-operative mortality (P = 0.490) between the NACS and SA groups. However, the NACS group was associated with a longer operation time (P < 0.0001), a higher R0 resection rate (P = 0.003), less reoperation (P = 0.030), and less anastomotic leakage (P = 0.007) compared with SA group. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with SA, NACS was considered safe and feasible for improved R0 resection rate as well as decreased reoperation and anastomotic leakage. While unbenefited overall survival indicated a less important effect of NACS on long-term oncological outcomes.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, many studies have found that mechanical tension can activiate NF-kB signal pathway and NF-kB plays an important role in the process of osteogenesis. However, it is still unclear whether this process exists in the anterior palatal suture expansion. In this paper, we mainly studied the effect of intraperitoneal injection of PDTC on the NF-kB signaling pathway and osteogenesis index of the anterior palatal suture expansion model in young adult rats. The expansion model is grouped and established: 45 male 8-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups, an expansion only (EO) group, an expansion plus PDTC (PE) group, and a control group. The results revealed that PDTC inhibited the activity of NF-kB signaling pathway and promote one morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2), steocalatin (OCN) expression. Compared with the control group, the optical density (OD) value of BMP in the EO group and PE group rats increased significantly from the first day to the seventh day, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). After 6.0Gy irradiation, PDTC administration group could slightly increase the total SOD level in the liver and serum of rats, and reduce the MDA level in the liver and serum, especially the effect of 60mg/kg and 90mg/kg was the most obvious.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of a caregiver training program on the oral hygiene of caregivers and patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and to identify program components and parameters for accurate assessment of outcomes. DESIGN: Single-blinded prospective cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Patients with AD and caregivers in nursing homes in the Greater Zhengzhou Area, China. METHODS: Initially 168 AD patient/caregiver pairs were recruited and randomly assigned to control, limited training, and comprehensive training groups. The mini-mental state examination, global deterioration scale, and Katz activities of daily living scale were conducted for patients with AD. Information on participants' oral hygiene habits and general oral health was collected. The modified Quigley-Hein Plaque Index (PI) and Gingival Index (GI) were used to assess oral hygiene and gingival health. Intervention included (1) an educational video showing the role of dental plaque and the modified Bass technique; and (2) caregivers practicing toothbrushing on themselves and patients with AD under professional guidance. Changes in oral hygiene and correlations between patient PI/GI and caregiver PI/GI were analyzed. RESULTS: After 6 weeks, complete data for 146 AD patient/caregiver pairs were collected. Before enrollment, most patients with AD had very poor oral hygiene. Compared with controls and limited training, only comprehensive training was able to achieve steady reduction in PI and GI scores in patients with AD, which still fell short of desirable levels (PI: 2.46 ± 0.52, GI: 1.24 ± 0.24, week 6). PI and GI scores in caregivers saw steady improvement only through comprehensive training (PI: 1.41 ± 0.38, GI: 0.88 ± 0.19, week 6). Number of training sessions had the greatest influence on both patient PI and GI scores. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Comprehensive caregiver training on toothbrushing skills is effective in improving the oral hygiene of caregivers and patients with AD in nursing homes. Additional evidence is needed to establish the optimal program structure.

OBJECTIVE: Many clinical studies have been carried out to investigate the relationship between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Owing to limited evidence and inconsistent findings among these studies, it is unclear whether periodontitis would increase the risk for RA. This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate whether periodontitis represents a risk factor for RA. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, and Wanfang were searched for eligible studies that compared periodontitis patients with controls. A pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to assess the association between periodontitis and RA. RESULTS: Thirteen studies including a total of 706611 periodontitis patients and 349983 control subjects were included. The pooled OR of RA risk between periodontitis and controls was (OR: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.31-2.17; P<0.0001), indicating that the patients in periodontitis group had a 69% greater risk for RA than people in control group. When stratified by disease type, the pooled results showed periodontitis represents a risk factor for incident RA (OR=1.70, 95%CI: 0.75-3.85, P<0.001) and mixed RA (OR=1.61, 95%CI: 1.26-2.06; P<0.001). When stratified by disease duration, the pooled results showed periodontitis represents a risk factor for RA disease duration>5 years (OR=2.88, 95%CI: 0.66-12.62, P=0.018), disease duration<5 years (OR=2.59, 95%CI: 0.83-8.11, P<0.001), mixed disease duration (OR=1.53; 95%CI: 1.05-2.22, P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis revealed an increased risk of RA in patients with periodontitis compared to healthy controls. Moreover, when stratified by disease type, there was a higher risk between incident RA and periodontitis. When stratified by disease duration, the patients with periodontitis might be more closely associated with the RA patients with disease duration >5 years.

ABSTRACT

Microbes in soil can degrade insoluble inorganic and organic phosphorus, which are components of the soil phosphorus cycle and play an important role in plant growth. Pinus massoniana is a pioneer tree species used for afforestation in southern China and grows in poor, acidic soil. A shortage of available phosphorus in soil limits the growth of P massoniana To alleviate this situation, it is necessary to improve soil fertility. A fungal strain (JP-NJ2) with the ability to solubilize phosphate was isolated from the P massoniana rhizosphere. The ability of JP-NJ2 to solubilize inorganic and organic phosphorus and promote the growth of P massoniana was evaluated. It showed that JP-NJ2 could grow in NBRIP inorganic phosphate (AlPO4, FePO4·4H2O, and Ca3[PO4]2) fermentation broths, with the highest phosphorus concentration (1.93 mg/ml) and phosphate-solubilizing rate (43.7%) for AlPO4 and in Monkina organic phosphate fermentation broth with a phosphorus concentration of 0.153 mg/ml. The phosphate-solubilizing capability in inorganic and organic fermentation broths was negatively correlated with pH. JP-NJ2-produced acids at a total concentration of 4.7 g/l, which included gluconic (2.3 g/l), oxalic (1.1 g/l), lactic (0.7 g/l) and malonic (0.5 g/l) acids. It prioritized extracellular acidic phosphatase and combined with phytase to solubilize organic phosphates. The fungal suspension and extracellular metabolites from phosphate-solubilizing fungi promoted the shoot length of P massoniana seedlings by 97.7% and 59.5%, respectively, while increasing the root crown diameter by 46.8% and 27.7%. JP-NJ2 was identified as Penicillium guanacastense based on its morphology and phylogenetic analyses of five genes/regions (ITS, ben A, cmd, cox1 and tef). This is the first report on P guanacastense isolated from pine tree rhizosphere soil in China and its high phosphate-solubilizing capability, which promoted the growth of P massoniana P guanacastense JP-NJ2 has potential use as a biological fertilizer in forestry and farming.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a common disease with an unclear pathological mechanism. No precise consensus has been reached to evaluate the association between the IL-10 rs1800872 (- 592, -590, -597 C>A) polymorphism and periodontal disease. Thus, we performed this meta-analysis to collect more evidence-based information. METHODS: Four online databases, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and China Biology Medicine disc (CBM), were searched in August 2018. An odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was applied to evaluate the association of the rs1800872 with periodontitis susceptibility. RESULTS: Twenty three case-control studies with 2714 patients and 2373 healthy controls were evaluated. The overall analyses verified that the IL-10 rs1800872 polymorphism was significantly associated with an increased risk of periodontitis in the allelic model, homozygote model, dominant model, and recessive model (A vs C: OR = 1.28, 95%CI = 1.11-1.49, P = .00, I = 56.87%; AA vs CC: OR = 2.06, 95%CI = 1.32-3.23, P = .00, I = 73.3%; AA + AC vs CC: OR = 1.42, 95%CI = 1.03-1.96, P = .03, I = 76.2%; AA vs AC + CC: OR = 1.78, 95%CI = 1.26-2.56, P = .00, I = 76.7%). Moreover, the subgroup analysis based on ethnicity, periodontitis type, and smoking status showed significant differences. CONCLUSIONS: The results of our meta-analysis demonstrate that rs1800872 is associated with periodontitis susceptibility in Caucasians and Asians. Moreover, A allele, AA genotype, CC genotype may be closely associated with chronic periodontitis (CP), while A allele, AA genotype may be closely associated with aggressive periodontitis (AgP).

ABSTRACT

NH3 is a valuable chemical with a wide range of applications, but the conventional Haber-Bosch process for industrial-scale NH3 production is highly energy-intensive with serious greenhouse gas emission. Electrochemical reduction offers an environmentally benign and sustainable route to convert N2 to NH3 at ambient conditions, but its efficiency depends greatly on identifying earth-abundant catalysts with high activity for the N2 reduction reaction. Here, it is reported that MnO particles act as a highly active catalyst for electrocatalytic hydrogenation of N2 to NH3 with excellent selectivity. In 0.1 m Na2SO4, this catalyst achieves a high Faradaic efficiency up to 8.02% and a NH3 yield of 1.11 × 10-10 mol s-1 cm-2 at -0.39 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, with great electrochemical and structural stability. On the basis of density functional theory calculations, MnO (200) surface has a smaller adsorption energy toward N than that of H with the *N2 → *N2H transformation being the potential-determining step in the nitrogen reduction reaction.

As a mitotic kinesin, kinesin family member 14 (KIF14) has been reported to serve oncogenic roles in a variety of malignancies; however, its functional role and regulatory mechanisms in colorectal cancer (CRC) remain unclear. In the present study, KIF14 was observed to be markedly overexpressed in CRC, and this upregulation was associated with tumor size and marker of proliferation Ki-67 immunostaining scores. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments were applied to identify the function of KIF14 in CRC progression. In vitro and in vivo assays revealed that KIF14 promoted CRC cell proliferation and accelerated the cell cycle via activation of protein kinase B. In addition, the present study investigated the potential mechanisms underlying KIF14 overexpression in CRC. Bioinformatics analyses and validation experiments, including reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, western blotting and a Dual-Luciferase reporter assay, demonstrated that, in addition to genomic amplification and transcriptional activation, KIF14 was regulated by microRNA (miR)-200c at the post-transcriptional level. Rescue experiments further demonstrated that decreased miR-200c expression could facilitate KIF14 to exert its pro-proliferative role. The expression of miR-200c was negatively correlated with KIF14 in CRC specimens. Collectively, the findings of the present study demonstrated the oncogenic role of KIF14 in colorectal tumorigenesis, and also revealed a complexity of regulatory mechanisms mediating KIF14 overexpression, which may provide insight for developing novel treatments for patients with CRC.

ABSTRACT

It is highly attractive to develop efficient electrocatalysts for the sensitive and selective detection of nitrite. In this communication, we report that an MnO2 nanoarray on titanium mesh (MnO2 NA/TM) is an efficient catalyst electrode for the electroreduction of nitrite. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the constructed MnO2 NA/TM sensor offers a superior sensing performance, having a short response time of 3 s, a wide detection range of 1.0 µM to 5.0 mM, a low detection limit of 1.5 nM (S/N = 3), and a response sensitivity of 10 301 µA mM-1 cm-2, with satisfactory selectivity, specificity, and reproducibility. This electrochemical system is also capable of catalyzing the electrochemical reduction of nitrite to NH3 with a transformation efficiency of 6%.

It is highly desired to design and develop low-cost and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for zinc-air batteries (ZABs). In this communication, we report that Fe-doped CoP nanosheet arrays on nickel foam (Fe0.33-CoP/NF) act as a highly active bifunctional electrocatalyst for both the oxygen reduction reaction and the oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media. We further demonstrate the use of Fe0.33-CoP/NF as the cathode to construct rechargeable ZABs with superior performance to that of the CoP/NF counterpart. In concentrated alkaline electrolytes, such ZABs exhibit a higher power density of 63 mW cm-2 than that of CoP/NF (23 mW cm-2) with a long cycle life (up to 200 h).

ABSTRACT

It is of great importance to design and develop highly active electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under alkaline conditions. In this work, we report the development of a CeO2-Cu3P nanoarray supported on nickel foam (CeO2-Cu3P/NF) as an excellent HER catalyst with the demand of an overpotential of only 148 mV to deliver a geometrical catalytic current density of 20 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH. Remarkably, this catalyst also shows strong long-term electrochemical durability for at least 100 h with nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the CeO2-Cu3P/NF hybrid has a lower water dissociation energy and a more thermo-neutral hydrogen adsorption free energy.

ABSTRACT

It is highly attractive to construct natural enzyme-free nanoarray architecture as a 3D catalyst for hydrogen peroxide detection due to its great specific surface area and easy accessibility to target molecules. In this communication, we demonstrate that nickel borate nanoarray supported on carbon cloth (Ni-Bi/CC) behaves as an efficient catalyst electrode for H2 O2 electro-reduction in neutral media. As a non-enzymatic electrochemical H2 O2 sensor, such Ni-Bi/CC shows superior sensing performances with a fast response time (less than 3 s), a low detection limit (0.85 nm, S/N=3), and a high sensitivity (18320 µA mm cm-2 ). Importantly, it also demonstrates favourable reproducibility and long-term stability.

ABSTRACT

Among reported electrode materials, a nanoarray is an attractive architecture for molecular detection because of its large specific surface area and easy accessibility for target molecules. Here, a new Fe3 N-Co2 N nanowires array grown on carbon cloth (Fe3 N-Co2 N/CC) is reported as a non-noble-metal bifunctional catalyst electrode for high-performance glucose oxidation and H2 O2 reduction. As an electrochemical non-enzymatic sensor for glucose detection, Fe3 N-Co2 N/CC shows a fast response time of 8 s, a low detection limit (LOD) of 77 nm (signal/noise=3), and a high sensitivity of 4333.7 µA mm-1 cm-2 . As an H2 O2 sensor, it shows a LOD of 59 nm (signal/noise=3) and a sensitivity of 2273.8 µA mm-1 cm-2 with a response time of 2 s. In addition, the proposed sensor is stable with high selectivity, specificity, and reproducibility, and its application for real sample analysis has been successfully demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

High-performance supercapacitors require the design and development of electrode materials with high conductivity and a large electrolyte-accessible surface area. Here, the use of a conductive NiCoP nanoarray on nickel foam (NiCoP/NF) as a superior pseudocapacitor electrode is demonstrated. This 3D electrode exhibits high areal capacitances of 9.2 and 5.97 F cm-2 at current densities of 2 and 50 mA cm-2 , respectively, with good rate capability and cycling stability. The asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device assembled using NiCoP/NF as positive electrode and active carbon as negative electrode delivers a high energy density of 1.16 mWh cm-2 at a power density of 1.6 mW cm-2 with 72 % retention of its initial specific capacitance after 2000 cycles at 50 mA cm-2 . The practical use is further demonstrated with two such ASC devices in series to light six LED indicators and also to drive an alkaline water electro- lyzer using NiCoP/NF as both cathode and anode for hydrogen production.
