ABSTRACT
The milk kitchen at Sheffield Children's Hospital has recently been modernized to update equipment and practices. Microbiological assessments before, during and after this upgrading are described. Limits for viable counts in pasteurized feeds are suggested and the practices adopted to minimize the contamination of feeds are described.

Ten children with phenylketonuria aged between 9 and 11 years were studied for a period of 1 year. Their usual phenylalanine free amino acid supplement was replaced by Maxamum XP (Scientific Hospital Supplies). There was no evidence of any change in the clinical status of these children and all claimed to prefer Maxamum XP to previous amino acid mixtures. Growth was normal and various biochemical parameters of nutritional status remained unaltered.

To assess the effects of dietary vasoactive amines in the aetiology of childhood migraine, 39 children were randomly allocated to either a high fibre diet low in these substances or a high fibre diet alone. Both groups of children showed a significant decrease in the number of headaches and there was no significant difference between the two groups. Dietary vasoactive amines have not been shown in this study to influence childhood migraine. The improvement seen in both groups emphasises the need for a control diet in studies designed to show that dietary manipulation improves disease.
