ABSTRACT

Penetrating wounds to the heart represent a significant surgical challenge because of their unique clinical course and the need for emergent operative care. This operative care, which may include cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), must be initiated in a prompt yet careful fashion to optimize outcome, while minimizing morbidity. Trauma, because of its unpredictable and non-routine nature, may present many challenges to the perfusionist in an attempt to anticipate surgical needs and requirements. In this case report, we describe the successful surgical repair of a cardiac nail gun injury, as well as strategies we feel are essential for the safe, successful, and timely application of emergent CPB.

ABSTRACT

We report changes in variable-energy positron annihilation spectroscopy measurements on undoped hydrogenated amorphous silicon films after light soaking. The change, seen predominantly in the high momentum band of the annihilation radiation, is not reversed by thermal annealing. We suggest, following recent models of the Staebler-Wronski effect, that light exposure induces hydrogen trapped in vacancylike defects to become mobile in the Si network. The observations place constraints on models of hydrogen motion fitting macroscopic Staebler-Wronski effect kinetics and may help to achieve a definitive description of metastability in a-Si:H.

ABSTRACT

The effects of drought on the free amino acid pools in 21- to 23-week-old seedlings of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) Britt.), white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench.) Voss) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) were followed during soil drying. Although water and pressure potentials were sensitive to water deficits, large changes in osmotic potential were not recorded until after the development of severe drought. Total soluble amino nitrogen in the shoots and roots of the three species rose as turgor declined, with peak concentrations attained late in the drought period when the pressure potentials of the shoots approached zero. All white spruce seedlings were alive at zero turgor and showed large decrements in osmotic potential, but concentrations of free amino nitrogen in the roots and shoots showed only modest increases, reaching 125 to 150% of their control values. In contrast, large numbers of black spruce and jack pine were dead or severely damaged at zero turgor, and only small changes in osmotic potential were detected during soil drying. Nevertheless, concentrations of soluble amino nitrogen in both species reached 150 to 200% of control values a few days before the seedlings died. Alanine, arginine, aspartic acid/asparagine, glutamic acid/glutamine, glycine, hydroxyproline and proline were the major components of the free amino acid pools under both water-stressed and non-stressed conditions, with the largest and most consistent increases observed in the roots of all three conifers. Although proline was an important and dynamic component of the free pools, absolute concentrations were commony equalled or exceeded by other free amino acids in the roots and shoots and nearly always exceeded by the concentration of aspartic acid/asparagine in both tissues. Differences in drought resistance among the three conifers were not reflected by unique patterns of amino acid accumulation or by large differences in absolute concentrations of the free amino acid pools.

ABSTRACT

A program has been developed to evaluate the number of spectral windows required to perform elemental analysis by ICP-AES, given a certain spectral window width. The data indicate that photodiode array systems (sequential slew scan) with as few as 7 or 8 acquisitions (windows) might be viable. With smaller windows, approaching in size those used by direct-reading spectrometers, it appears that conventionally designed spectrometers with photomultiplier tube detectors could use between 29 and 37 windows to determine 59 elements. This indicates that a general purpose direct-reading spectrometer may be feasible.

ABSTRACT

Dormant seeds of Acer pseudoplatanus L. contain two zones of inhibition on paper chromatograms in "10:1:1" as detected by the lettuce and cress seed germination, and the wheat coleoptile bioassays. One zone at Rf 0.6-0.8 was partitioned into ethyl acetate at acid pH and was shown to contain ABA by its behaviour on GLC and isomerization under ultra-violet light. The other zone at Rf 0.9 was detected only in the germination bioassays and was partitioned into ethyl acetate over a range of pH indicating the presence of one or more neutral compounds.The inhibitors present in the embryo of dormant sycamore seeds inhibited the germination of non-dormant sycamore seeds at relatively low concentrations. A comparison with the effects of application of exogenous ABA indicated that endogenous ABA could not solely account for the inhibitory activity of seed extracts, which appeared to be due partly to the presence of ABA and partly to that of neutral compounds present in the embryo. Leaching treatments that removed dormancy led to a decrease in the level of inhibitors present mainly in the basic fraction. The exogenous application of kinetin to dormant sycamore seeds increased germination whereas gibberellic acid had no effect. Similar responses were obtained with lettuce seeds inhibited by the basic fraction of dormant sycamore seeds.It is suggested that an inhibitor-cytokinin interaction may be involved in the dormancy of sycamore seeds.

ABSTRACT

Stratification of sugar maple seed resulted in high levels of cytokinins after 20 days. A further increase in the chilling period led to a decrease in cytokinins. Most of the cytokinin activity detected was due to compound(s) that co-chromatographed with zeatin.It is concluded that this increase in cytokinins may result in the breaking of dormancy, perhaps by overcoming the effect of endogenous inhibitors.
