ABSTRACT

Semiconductor-based layered hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) house high-wavevector volume plasmon polariton (VPP) modes in the infrared spectral range. VPP modes have successfully been exploited in the weak-coupling regime through the enhanced Purcell effect. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate strong coupling between the VPP modes in a semiconductor HMM and the intersubband transition of epitaxially embedded quantum wells. We observe clear anticrossings in the dispersion curves for the zeroth-, first-, second-, and third-order VPP modes, resulting in upper and lower polariton branches for each mode. This demonstration sets the stage for the creation of novel infrared optoelectronic structures combining HMMs with embedded epitaxial emitter or detector structures.

ABSTRACT

Parasitic infections of the South China tigers in the Meihua Mountains have not been explored previously. Faeces of 22 South China tigers from the China Tiger Park in the Meihua Mountains were examined. Eggs of ascaridoid nematodes and oocysts of coccidia were detected by Mini-FLOTAC assay. Morphological observation and molecular characterisation of the oocysts were carried out. The prevalence of Toxascaris leonina (von Linstow, 1902) was 18% (4/22), and the highest egg per gram (EPG) count in the faeces was 27,150. The prevalence of Cystoisospora sp. was 45% (1 0/22) and the highest oocysts per gram (OPG) in the faeces was 6,000. In addition, we found one ascaridoid nematode in the South China tiger's faeces and was molecularly and morphologically identified as T. leonina. The oocysts in the faeces were sporulated in vitro and identified as Cystoisospora sp. Amplification of full-length internal transcribed spacers (ITS) resulted in sequences 1,622 bp long. Using the sequences, Cystoisospora sp. of the South China tiger was closest to Isospora belli (Wenyon, 1923) and Cystoisospora suis (Biester, 1934).

ABSTRACT

In the present study, samples of Oesophagostomum spp. collected from pigs from different geographical localities in mainland China were characterized genetically by polymerase chain reaction-linked single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) techniques using genetic markers in the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA). The second internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) was amplified from 51 individual nodule worms by PCR, and the amplicons were analyzed by SSCP. With the exception of slight microheterogeneity, SSCP analyses displayed two distinct banding profiles that allowed the identification of all Oesophagostomum spp. samples examined into two groups, the first one represented O. dentatum, and the second one may represent O. quadrispinulatum. Then, the entire ITS was amplified from individual samples, and the amplicons were digested with restriction endonuclease Pst I. The results of RFLP analyses were consistent with that of SSCP. Sequence analysis of ITS rDNA supported the identification and differentiation of Chinese Oesophagostomum spp. samples into two species, namely, O. dentatum and O. quadrispinulatum. These PCR-based approaches provide useful complementary tools to traditional methods for the accurate identification of Oesophagostomum spp. (irrespective of developmental stage) and have implications for studying the ecology and population genetic structures of these parasites and for the prevention and control of the diseases they cause.
