ABSTRACT

Research and development of high-performance catalysts is a key technology to realize hydrogen energy storage and transportation based on liquid organic hydrogen carriers. Co/beta was prepared using beta zeolite as a carrier via an electrostatic adsorption (ESA)-chemical reduction method, and it was used as the template and reducing agent to prepare bimetallic catalysts via an ultrasonic assisted galvanic replacement process (UGR). The fabricated PdCo/beta were characterized by TEM, XPS, FT-IR, XRD, H2-TPR, and H2-TPD. It was shown that the ultrafine PdCo nanoparticles (NPs) are evenly distributed on the surface of the beta zeolite. There is electron transfer between metal NPs and strong-metal-support-interaction (SMSI), which results in highly efficient catalytic dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (12H-NEC) dehydrogenation performance of PdCo bimetallic catalysts. The dehydrogenation efficiency reached 100 % in 4 h at 180 °C and 95.3 % in 6 h at 160 °C. The TOF of 146.22 min-1 is 7 times that of Pd/beta. The apparent activation energy of the reaction is 66.6 kJ/mol, which is much lower than that of Pd/beta. Under the action of ultrasonic waves, the galvanic replacement reaction is accelerated, and the intermetal and metal-carrier interactions are enhanced, which improves the catalytic reaction performance.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To examine the temporal patterns of patient characteristics, treatments used and outcomes associated with COVID-19 in patients who were hospitalised for the disease between January and 15 November 2020. DESIGN: Observational cohort study. SETTING: COVID-19 subset of the Optum deidentified electronic health records, including more than 1.8 million patients from across the USA. PARTICIPANTS: There were 51 510 hospitalised patients who met the COVID-19 definition, with 37 617 in the laboratory positive cohort and 13 893 in the clinical cohort. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Incident acute clinical outcomes, including in-hospital all-cause mortality. RESULTS: Respectively, 48% and 49% of the laboratory positive and clinical cohorts were women. The 50- 65 age group was the median age group for both cohorts. The use of antivirals and dexamethasone increased over time, fivefold and twofold, respectively, while the use of hydroxychloroquine declined by 98%. Among adult patients in the laboratory positive cohort, absolute age/sex standardised incidence proportion for in-hospital death changed by -0.036 per month (95% CI -0.042 to -0.031) from March to June 2020, but remained fairly flat from June to November, 2020 (0.001 (95% CI -0.001 to 0.003), 17.5% (660 deaths /3986 persons) in March and 10.2% (580/5137) in October); in the clinical cohort, the corresponding changes were -0.024 (95% CI -0.032 to -0.015) and 0.011 (95% CI 0.007 0.014), respectively (14.8% (175/1252) in March, 15.3% (189/1203) in October). Declines in the cumulative incidence of most acute clinical outcomes were observed in the laboratory positive cohort, but not for the clinical cohort. CONCLUSION: The incidence of adverse clinical outcomes remains high among COVID-19 patients with clinical diagnosis only. Patients with COVID-19 entering the hospital are at elevated risk of adverse outcomes.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To examine age, gender, and temporal differences in baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes of adult patients hospitalised with COVID-19. DESIGN: A cohort study using deidentified electronic medical records from a Global Research Network. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: 67 456 adult patients hospitalised with COVID-19 from the USA; 7306 from Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific between February 2020 and January 2021. RESULTS: In the US cohort, compared with patients 18-34 years old, patients ≥65 had a greater risk of intensive care unit (ICU) admission (adjusted HR (aHR) 1.73, 95% CI 1.58 to 1.90), acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS)/respiratory failure (aHR 1.86, 95% CI 1.76 to 1.96), invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV, aHR 1.93, 95% CI, 1.73 to 2.15), and all-cause mortality (aHR 5.6, 95% CI 4.36 to 7.18). Men appeared to be at a greater risk for ICU admission (aHR 1.34, 95% CI 1.29 to 1.39), ARDS/respiratory failure (aHR 1.24, 95% CI1.21 to 1.27), IMV (aHR 1.38, 95% CI 1.32 to 1.45), and all-cause mortality (aHR 1.16, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.24) compared with women. Moreover, we observed a greater risk of adverse outcomes during the early pandemic (ie, February-April 2020) compared with later periods. In the ex-US cohort, the age and gender trends were similar; for the temporal trend, the highest proportion of patients with all-cause mortality were also in February-April 2020; however, the highest percentages of patients with IMV and ARDS/respiratory failure were in August-October 2020 followed by February-April 2020. CONCLUSIONS: This study provided valuable information on the temporal trends of characteristics and outcomes of hospitalised adult COVID-19 patients in both USA and ex-USA. It also described the population at a potentially greater risk for worse clinical outcomes by identifying the age and gender differences. Together, the information could inform the prevention and treatment strategies of COVID-19. Furthermore, it can be used to raise public awareness of COVID-19's impact on vulnerable populations.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To identify associations between systemic medications and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) requiring a procedure using United States insurance claims data in a hypothesis-generating study. DESIGN: Database study. PARTICIPANTS: In total, 6130 POAG cases (defined as patients with POAG undergoing a glaucoma procedure) were matched to 30 650 controls (defined as patients undergoing cataract surgery but without a coded glaucoma diagnosis, procedure, or medication) by age, gender, and region of residence. METHODS: Participant prescription drug use was calculated for the 5-year period before the glaucoma procedure or cataract surgery. Separately for individual generic drugs and drug classes, logistic regression was used to assess the association with POAG status. This was done across all generic drugs and drug classes that were prescribed in at least 1% of cases and controls. Analyses were adjusted for age, sex, region of residence, employment status, insurance plan type, and the total number of drugs prescribed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between each drug or drug class and POAG. RESULTS: The median age of participants was 72 years, and 52% were women. We tested for associations of POAG with 423 drug classes and 1763 generic drugs, resulting in a total of 2186 statistical tests and a Bonferroni-adjusted significance threshold of P < 2.3 × 10-5. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were strongly associated with a reduced risk of POAG (OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.64-0.76; P = 1.0 × 10-15); the most significant drug in this class was citalopram (OR, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.57-0.77; P = 1.2 × 10-7). Calcium channel blockers were strongly associated with an increased risk of POAG (OR, 1.26; 95% CI, 1.18-1.35; P = 1.8 × 10-11); the most significant drug in this class was amlodipine (OR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.18-1.37; P = 5.9 × 10-10). CONCLUSIONS: We present data documenting potential associations of SSRIs and calcium channel blockers with POAG requiring a procedure. Further research may be indicated to better evaluate any associates of serotonin metabolism or calcium channels in glaucoma, or establish whether the associations are due to variations in the patterns for prescribing these drugs.

ABSTRACT

Psoriasis is associated with a substantial burden of comorbidities; however, incidence rates (IRs) of these comorbidities following psoriasis diagnosis are not well characterized. Using administrative claims data from the Truven Health Analytics MarketScan Commercial and Medicare Supplemental Databases between January 1, 2002 and September 30, 2015, we compared the incidence of newly diagnosed comorbidities among patients with psoriasis versus demographically matched (birth year, gender, and geographic region) control patients without psoriasis in the United States. Comorbidities of interest were identified using ICD-9-CM codes. A total of 114,824 matched pairs of patients with psoriasis and control patients were included. IRs of all selected comorbidities were significantly higher among patients with psoriasis compared with controls (P<0.05). The most common newly diagnosed comorbidities in both groups were hyperlipidemia (psoriasis versus control, IR per 1,000 patient-years, 127.5 versus 102.8) and hypertension (94.3 versus 80.6). The greatest differences in IRs between patients with psoriasis and controls were observed for rheumatoid arthritis (9.7 versus 3.1; IR ratio [IRR], 3.15) and psoriatic arthritis (24.0 versus 0.2; IRR, 151.57). In this real-world study, patients with psoriasis were more likely to develop new selected comorbidities after diagnosis compared with demographically matched patients without psoriasis.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: We analyzed the burden of illness of sporadic inclusion body myositis (sIBM) patients and the costs to the healthcare system. METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis of 333 sIBM patients aged ≥ 50 years was performed using United States (U.S.) claims data. sIBM patients were matched in a 1:5 ratio to randomly selected individuals with ≥1 healthcare encounter within the year of index date. RESULTS: sIBM patients presented with higher rates of disease- and muscle-related conditions, such as myalgia, myositis, muscle weakness, dysphagia, pneumonia, and falls. Use of healthcare resources, including physical therapy, office visits, emergency room (ER) visits, and hospitalizations, was greater in sIBM patients. This was also reflected in significantly higher overall healthcare costs in the sIBM population driven mainly by more all-cause office visits, all-cause ER visits and hospitalizations. CONCLUSIONS: sIBM imposes a substantial burden on U.S. patients in terms of additional healthcare usage and associated costs. Muscle Nerve 56: 861-867, 2017.
