ABSTRACT
A primary squamous cell carcinoma occurring in the prostate of a sixty-nine-year-old man is described. A radical excision that included cystoprostatectomy, total penectomy, scrotectomy, pubic symphysiectomy, and abdominoperineal resection of rectum was done. The patient died of systemic metastases six months after diagnosis. Review of the literature suggests that such a cancer of the prostate is rare, highly aggressive, and responds poorly to any mode of therapy. Histogenesis of this tumor remains controversial; however, it probably does not originate from the prostatic acinar cells.

We report a case of human penile ossification with roentgenologic and histologic confirmation. The English literature is reviewed, and the pathogenesis of such a rare lesion is presented. Penile ossification appears to be an acquired metaplastic process occurring in an area of fibrosis.

Radiologic evaluation disclosed a renal tumor and a calcified mass in the right kidney of a 45-year-old man. The resected kidney revealed that a renal cell carcinoma had invaded the renal pelvis and the polypoid intrapelvic portion had undergone calcification resulting in a pseudocalculus.

Small-cell carcinoma of the prostate is rare, but lethal. We report on 2 cases and review another 6 cases reported in the English literature. Microscopically the tumor may be pure small-cell carcinoma like that seen in the lung or may have a mixed pattern of adenocarcinoma with small-cell carcinoma. This tumor most probably arises from the basal or reserve cells of the prostatic acini. The totipotential basal cells have dual capacity for differentiation into adenocarcinoma and small-cell carcinoma.

Three patients with carcinoma of the first and the third part of the duodenum are reported. A review of the literature shows the diagnosis of this rare lesion of the duodenum is usually late. In order for surgical resection to be successful, suspicion of such a lesion and an aggressive workup is needed.

A 67-year-old man presented with signs and symptoms of obstructive jaundice. At autopsy, a hepatocellular carcinoma was noted to have obstructed both hepatic ducts and the common hepatic duct. Literature is reviewed to elaborate on this unusual manifestation of hepatocellular carcinoma.

A case of symptomatic granular cell tumor of the esophagus is described. Another 32 cases collected from the English literature are analyzed. The reported cases have occurred mostly in women of less than 50 years of age presenting with dysphagia. Excision of the lesion is curative.

A case of human sparganosis is reported. Approximately sixty-eight such cases have been reported from the United States, most having been found in the southern states. Clinically sparganosis appears as a subcutaneous nodule. Diagnosis is established after the larval worm has been identified in the excised tissue. Excision of the lesion is curative.

A case is reported of prolonged survival after lobectomy for large cell undifferentiated carcinoma of the lung and resection of metastatic carcinoma of the brain. The patient had survived 11 years 5 months after lung resection and 10 years 4 months after excision of brain metastasis. A review of the reports of another 12 patients who survived 5 years or longer after craniotomy, shows that the surgical excision of a single metastatic lesion of the brain with or without postoperative irradiation offers the best hope for prolonged survival.

This report describes a 60-year-old woman with a fibroma of tendon sheath of left hand. Ultrastructural study of the tumor reveals the nature of the tumor cells as fibroblasts, thus distinguishing it from the more common giant cell tumor of tendon sheath believed to be derived from synovial cells.

A 54-year-old-man presented with inferior vena caval obstruction. At autopsy, a retroperitoneal malignant fibrous histiocytoma was noted to have invaded the inferior vena cava. Such a clinical presentation is quite unusual for a retroperitoneal sarcoma.

A 48-year-old man with a clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis on exploration was found to have a seminoma in an undescended pelvic testis. The tumor had directly invaded the retrocecal appendix, causing acute appendicitis. Such a highly unusual occurrence has not been described in the English literature.

Adenocarcinoma of the rete testis is very rare. It is highly malignant with potential of early metastasis. We are reporting such a case occurring in a 34-year-old man who remains tumor-free 7 years after orchiectomy. Another 20 reported cases of such a tumor from the English literature are reviewed.

A 60-year-old man had under gone a left below-knee amputation 30 years ago owing to trauma and burn suffered in a dynamite explosion. He has been wearing an artificial leg since then. He developed a squamous cell carcinoma on the amputation stump 30 years later. The possible relationship of the burn scar and chronic irritation by the artificial leg to the cancer is discussed.

A 64-year-old man diagnosed to have systemic scleroderma for 1 year developed small-cell carcinoma of the lung. Six additional cases obtained from the literature describing small-cell carcinoma occurring in patients with scleroderma are reviewed.
