ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: It is always a challenging job to compare forest resources as there is not a standardized spatial unit with location information. Google Plus Code, the newest alphanumeric geocoding system, uses 20 specifically selected letters and numbers to assign a unique global ID to every cell at different levels of a hierarchical grid system which is established based on latitude and longitude. It can be used as a standardized, unique global geospatial unit to segment, locate, quantitate, evaluate, and compare natural resources with area, boundary, and location information embedded. RESULTS: For this proof-of-concept case study, forest inventory data from 1987, 2002, and 2019 for the Zijin Mountain National Forest Park in Jiangsu Province, China was analyzed based on Google Plus Code grid/cell. This enabled the quantification of carbon storage at each cell allowing for the comparison of estimated carbon storage at same or different locations over time. CONCLUSIONS: This methodology is used to quantify the impacts of changing forest conditions and forest management activities on carbon storage with high spatial accuracy through the 32-year study period. Furthermore, this technique could be used for providing technical support and validation of carbon credit quantification and management.

ABSTRACT

Two series of unsymmetric α-cyanostilbene-based tetracatenars containing three hexadecyl chains at one end and one alkyl chain with varying lengths at the other end were prepared by using Suzuki coupling and Knoevenagel reactions. These tetracatenars with the terminal three hexadecyl chains, which are adjacent to the cyano group are non-mesogens, whereas the isomers with one alkyl chain, which is adjacent to the cyano group display transition from non-mesogens to monotropic hexagonal columnar liquid crystal upon elongation of the alkyl chain. This transition could be attributed to that the three hexadecyl chains which are adjacent to the cyano group decrease the interactions between π-conjugated rigid cores, hindering the formation of mesophase. In addition, weak slovatochromism implies weak ICT in both series tetracatenars. Both series isomers exhibit distinct AIE characteristics attributing to the presence of α-cyanostilbene, which could induce stereoisomerism and restricted intermolecular rotation in the aggregated state. Different mechanochromism behaviors could be achieved due to the positional isomerism of terminal alkyl chains. Therefore, tuning the position of terminal alkyl chains could give rise to distinct changes in the molecular aggregate, which provides a scheme to build multifunctional materials with diverse potentials.

ABSTRACT

Background: Intravenous lobular capillary hemangioma (IVLCH) of the neck is a kind of rare benign tumor of vein. Purpose: In this paper, we report two female patients who were hospitalized because of neck masses. Results: The tumors in the neck veins of our patients were white oval masses with pedicle, clearly defined and of different sizes. Their immunohistochemical staining results showed CD31 (+), CD34 (+), SMA (+), ERG (+). The pathological diagnosis was intravenous lobular capillary hemangioma. Conclusions: Due to the location, morphology and immunohistochemistry, This lesion needs to be distinguished from other intravascular lesions such as thrombus, hemangiosarcoma and papillary endothelial hyperplasia.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in the treatment of diabetic ulcers. Methods: The clinical data of 27 diabetic patients, who underwent CEUS examination of their ulcers in our hospital between April 2021 and July 2022 were collected. Among them, 26 patients suffered from diabetic foot ulcers, 5 of whom underwent amputation during hospitalization, and one patient suffered from hip ulcer. The 27 patients' mean age was (64.08±12.57) years. Fasting blood glucose levels of the patients were 3.36-34.61 mmol/L, with a mean of (10.62±8.77) mmol/L. Their glycosylated hemoglobin levels were 5.80%-10.70%, with an average of 7.96%±1.50%. Philips EPIQ7 ultrasound system with L9-3 linear probe of 3-9 MHz was used. First, the patients' ulcers were examined with conventional ultrasound to observe for abnormal echo. Then, 2.4 mL SonoVue (Bracco, Italy), a contrast agent, was injected intravenously through the elbow to look for effusion/pus, sinus tract, or dead space in the lesion area, and images were acquired. Results: Among the 27 patients, except for 5 with amputation stumps, 22 patients had wound areas ranging from 0.16 cm 2 to 215 cm 2, all being accompanied by sinus tract formation. Ten patients underwent ultrasound examination during their treatment. The positive rate of the results of conventional ultrasound was 50% (5/10) for identifying effusion/pus and pseudoaneurysm in the deep area of ulcers, while the positive rate of CEUS results was 100% (10/10). In addition to the lesions found by conventional ultrasound, CEUS also found large sinus tracts or dead spaces in the deep surface of ulcers in 5 additional patients. Of the 27 patients, 17 underwent ultrasound examination of the healing status of sinus tracts and dead spaces in the deep areas of ulcers before discharge. No sinus tracts in the deep areas of the ulcers were found by conventional ultrasound. However, relatively small dead spaces or sinus tracts in the deep areas of the ulcers were found in 10 patients by CEUS. Conventional ultrasound and CEUS found that 1 patient had a small amount of fluid in the amputation stump. In the remaining 6 patients, no deep sinus tracts in the ulcers were found by either conventional ultrasound or CUES, and the ulcers healed completely. Conclusion: By examining microvascular perfusion in diabetic wounds with CEUS, we can observe the extent of sinus tracts during treatment and whether the sinus tracts have healed or whether there are still dead spaces before patient discharge, which provides support for clinical decision-making concerning the treatment of diabetic ulcers.

ABSTRACT

Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) is widely present in nature and regulates plant growth and development, as well as playing essential roles, especially in abiotic stress responses. Nevertheless, there is no comprehensive knowledge to date on MDH family members in rice. In this study, a total of 12 MDH members in rice were identified through genome-wide analysis and divided into three groups on the basis of their phylogenetic relationship and protein-conserved motifs. Evolutionary analysis showed that MDH proteins from rice, maize and wheat shared a close phylogenetic relationship, and the MDH family was conserved in the long-term process of domestication. We identified two segmental duplication events involving four genes, which could be the major force driving the expansion of the OsMDH family. The expression profile, cis-regulatory elements and qRT-PCR results of these genes revealed that a few OsMDH showed high tissue specificity, almost all of which had stress response elements in the promoter region, and ten MDH members were significantly induced by salt stress. Through gene-based association analysis, we found a significant correlation between salt tolerance at the seedling stage and the genetic variation of OsMDH8.1 and OsMDH12.1. Additionally, we found that the polymorphism in the promoter region of OsMDH8.1 might be related to the salt tolerance of rice. This study aimed to provide valuable information on the functional study of the rice MDH gene family related to salt stress response and revealed that OsMDH8.1 might be an important gene for the cultivar improvement of salt tolerance in rice.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the value of ultrasound (US) examination for the preoperative assessment of carotid body tumors (CBTs) and to predict surgical outcomes. METHODS: A total of 15 CBT lesions in 15 patients were included in this study. CBT measurements determined using US, and included maximal diameter, volume, tumor distance to base of skull (DTBOS), and carotid wall infiltration. A correlation analysis was conducted to determine the correlation between US measurements and surgical outcomes, including estimated blood loss (EBL), cranial nerve injury, surgical time, and hospital length of stay (HLOS). RESULTS: EBL showed a high level of correlation with the maximal dimeter (r = 0.596, p < .05) and the volume of the tumor (r = 0.864, p < .05). Surgical time was positively correlated with tumor volume (r = 0.592, p < .05) and negatively correlated with DTBOS (r = -0.554, p < .05). There was no significant correlation (p > .05) shown between cranial nerve injury and US variables. HLOS showed the high degree of correlation with the maximal dimeter (r = 0.658, p < .05), and was also negatively correlated with DTBOS (r = -0.620, p < .00). CONCLUSIONS: US examination allows for the visualization of features of CBTs, which is a useful and safe tool to be used to predict surgical outcomes. Further research is necessary to validate this exploration method for the preoperative assessment of CBTs.

ABSTRACT

Sitosterolemia is a rare form of dyslipidemia that has diverse clinical manifestations, and insufficient knowledge of the disease frequently leads to a delay in diagnosis. We report a case of sitosterolemia in a 26-year-old Chinese woman, characterized by anemia, thrombocytopenia, persistent hypercholesterolemia, premature atherosclerosis, extensive xanthoma, and arthralgia-tenosynovitis. Successive misdiagnoses of Evans syndrome and familial hypercholesterolemia had been made, and the patient had responded minimally to steroid therapy, splenectomy, and statin treatment; therefore, she was referred to our hospital. On admission, a peripheral blood smear revealed the presence of abnormally shaped erythrocytes and giant platelets. Multiple atherosclerotic lesions, sites of tenosynovitis, and carotid sheath xanthomas were identified on ultrasonography. Compound heterozygous mutations of the ABCG5 gene, including a hot variant (c.1,336, exon10 C>T, p.(R446*)) and a novel variant (c.1,325-3(IVS9)_c.1325-2(IVS9)delCA) were separately identified in her parents by pedigree analysis. Plant sterols analysis by high performance liquid chromatography method revealed remarkably elevated plasma plant sterol concentrations after drug withdrawal but reduced rapidly after restarting ezetimibe during follow-up period. After 21 months of treatment with ezetimibe and a low-plant sterol diet, her hematologic abnormalities, tenosynovitis, and hypercholesterolemia had significantly improved; and ultrasonography showed that her skin and carotid sheath xanthomas had resolved or shrunk. This case demonstrates that morphological changes in blood cells on a peripheral blood smear, ultrasonographic findings and ABCG5/ABCG8 gene screening are valuable, and plant sterol analysis in serum is crucial to confirm diagnosis and assess treatment adequacy for sitosterolemia.

ABSTRACT

Xanthomas are visibly deformed cholesterol deposits that are commonly associated with lipid disorders, such as familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) or rare sitosterolemia. We present the first report of two cases of carotid sheath xanthomas in patients with lipid disorders. Case 1 involved a 26-year-old woman presenting with two heterogeneous mutations on the ABCG5 gene-as noted on genetic testing-who was finally diagnosed with sitosterolemia. Ultrasonography (US) revealed hypoechoic masses centered in the bilateral carotid sheath, which gradually reduced in size after diet control and the use of ezetimibe. Case 2 involved a 27-year-old man who was diagnosed with possible FH and had recurrent bilateral buttock xanthomas, as well as bilateral carotid sheath masses detected by US. Postoperative pathological examination of the resected right neck mass confirmed a xanthoma with proliferation of multinucleated giant cells and deposition of cholesterol clefts.

ABSTRACT

Intravascular lobular capillary hemangioma (ILCH) is a rare variant of pyogenic granuloma, which develops within the lumen of a blood vessel. Here, we report the case of a 38-year-old male presenting with a mobile, incompressible, nonpulsatile nodule in the superficial fascia of the forearm. A first ultrasonographic examination diagnosed the mass as intravascular thrombosis with partial recanalization. Three months later, a second ultrasonographic examination concluded to the existence of an intravascular tumor, which finally turned out at pathological examination to be ILCH. Here, we report the ultrasonographic features of ILCH and the differential diagnosis between ILCH and other intravascular masses like thrombus.

One month earlier, he started to experience left chest pain with no cough. Pulmonary CT angiography (CTA) revealed a left lower lobe segmental pulmonary embolus. The local hospital made a diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. He received anticoagulants, and his chest pain was gradually relieved. At the time of current presentation, the patient was experiencing right lower extremity swelling and pain. Physical examination revealed a 4 × 3 cm palpable right inguinal mass with no redness. His medical history and family history were negative. The results of laboratory work-up were normal, with a d-dimer level of 0.16 mg/L fibrinogen equivalent units (reference range, <0.46 mg/L) and an international normalized ratio of 2.45 (therapeutic range, 2.0-3.0 for a patient taking warfarin), except the prothrombin time was 28.2 seconds (reference range, 9.6-12.8 seconds) and the activated partial thromboplastin time was 52.2 seconds (reference range, 24.8-33.8 seconds). Echocardiography, chest radiography, chest CT, and contrast-enhanced (CE) CT revealed no abnormalities. The patient underwent right lower extremity vascular conventional US (Philips IU22; Philips) with an L9-3 probe (3-9 MHz, venous condition) and contrast-enhanced US (1.5-2.0 mL, SonoVue; Bracco) with an intravenous bolus injection at the initial evaluation. Two days later, noncontrast and contrast-enhanced CT images of the lower abdomen (1.5 mL per kilogram of body weight, 300 mg/mL iomeprol, Iomeron; Bracco) were acquired for further evaluation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recurrence after the healing of a foot ulcer is very common among patients with diabetes mellitus. Novel diabetic therapeutic footwear consisted of merino wool, vibration chip, and orthopedic insoles is designed to influence multifaceted mechanisms of foot ulcer occurrence. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the optimally designed therapeutic footwear on preventing ulcer recurrence in patients with a history of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). METHODS/DESIGN: The trial is designed as a two arms, parallel-group, open-label randomized controlled intervention study. The Log-rank Test was used for calculating sample size based on the latest national multicenter survey data of DFU in China. Three hundred and twenty participants will be recruited from the Diabetic Foot Care Center, West China Hospital, Sichuan University. Adults with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, healed foot ulceration in the 3 months prior to randomization, and aged ≥18 years, will be recruited. Participants will be randomized to receive novel diabetic therapeutic footwear (n = 160) or their own footwear (n = 160). The primary outcome will be the incidence of ulcer recurrence. The secondary outcome will be measurements of barefoot dynamic plantar pressures, the influence of footwear adherence on ulcer recurrence, and the incidence of cardiovascular events. Assessment visits and data collection will be obtained at baseline, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. The intention-to-treat principle will be applied. A cox regression model will be used to calculate the hazard ratio for the incidence of ulcer recurrence. The change of barefoot dynamic plantar pressures will be assessed using repeated measures ANOVA. The study protocol has been approved by the Ethics Committee of The Biomedical Research Ethics Committee of West China Hospital, Sichuan University (Reference No. 2019(96)). DISCUSSION: This clinical trial will give information on the ability of novel diabetic footwear on preventing ulcer recurrence in patients with a history of diabetic foot ulceration. If the optimally designed therapeutic footwear does work well, the findings will contribute to the development of innovative treatment devices for preventing foot ulcer recurrence in high-risk patients. ABSTRACT

The goal of this meta-analysis is to investigate whether carotid intraplaque neovascularization (IPN) on contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) correlates with past cardiovascular events (CVEs) and prognosis. The present meta-analysis included 22 studies involving 3232 patients. The pooled analysis revealed that the presence of IPN was significantly associated with a higher incidence of future CVEs (pooled relative risk = 3.28, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.28-4.73) and a lower event-free probability (pooled hazard ratio = 2.51, 95% CI: 1.48-4.27). The presence of IPN was significantly associated with higher rates of past cardiac events (odds ratio = 4.25, 95% CI: 2.48-7.29) and past cerebrovascular accidents (odds ratio = 4.83, 95% CI: 2.66-8.78). Our results suggest that carotid IPN on CEUS significantly correlates with past cardiac events and cerebrovascular accidents and can predict future CVEs. Carotid CEUS is useful in CVE risk stratification.

ABSTRACT

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 76 year-old woman with 8-year history of diabetes mellitus and hypertension was admitted with gangrene of left great toe, 3rd, 4th and 5th toes. Twenty months ago, She started to receive hemodialysis due to end-stage renal disease. She did not have any history of reactive airway disease nor bradycardia that would contraindicate the use of topical beta-blocker. The X-ray of left lower limb and foot showed calcification of left superficial femoral artery, popliteal artery, anterior tibial artery, posterior tibial artery, dorsal foot artery and digital artery, as well as osteolytic destruction at distal end of metatarsal bone, and lateral dislocation of the 4th and 5th toes. Color Doppler ultrasound of bilateral lower extremity arteries showed obvious calcification of bilateral superficial femoral arteries, thrombosis of left popliteal artery, severe stenosis of left anterior tibial artery, occlusion of left posterior tibial artery, right anterior tibial artery and posterior tibial artery. Computed tomographic angiography (CTA) of bilateral lower limb arteries revealed moderate stenosis of left superficial femoral artery, occlusion of left popliteal artery, left posterior tibial artery and dorsal pedal artery, occulusion of right posterior tibial artery, but right dorsal pedal artery was visible. DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT AND FOLLOW-UP: Diagnosis of diabetic foot (left, grade 4) and diabetic lower extremity arterial occlusion (left, stage 4) was made. Based on multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussion, the patient was unable to undergo vascular bypass surgery, and left lower extermity amputation also was not suitable because of right atrial thrombosis. Therefore, conservative treatment was recommended. The specific scheme used clopidogrel for antiplatelet agglutination, Low Molecular Weight Heparin (Clexane) and warfarin for anticoagulation, lipo-alprostadil for vasodilation, as well as local debridement and ultrasonic debridement. The treatments were given for up to 9 weeks, but with no significant clinical response. So the patient was treated with vacuum-assisted closure and autologous platelet-rich gel therapy for the next 7 weeks, then applied with 1 drop of timolol maleate 0.5% ophthalmic solution per cm 2 wound area every other day for another 6 weeks, the wound rapidly healed and re-epithelialized basically. The follow-up for 5 weeks showed that the wound healed completely without any discomfort. No side effect was found.

ABSTRACT

Soil salinity is a major factor affecting rice growth and productivity worldwide especially at seedling stage. Many genes for salt tolerance have been identified and applied to rice breeding, but the actual mechanism of salt tolerance remains unclear. In this study, seedlings of 664 cultivated rice varieties from the 3000 Rice Genome Project (3K-RG) were cultivated by hydroponic culture with 0.9% salt solution for trait identification. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) of salt tolerance was performed using different models of analysis. Twenty-one QTLs were identified and two candidate genes named OsSTL1 (Oryza sativa salt tolerance level 1) and OsSTL2 (Oryza sativa salt tolerance level 2) were confirmed using sequence analysis. Haplotype and sequence analysis revealed that gene OsSTL1 was a homolog of salt tolerance gene SRP1 (Stress associated RNA-binding protein 1) in Arabidopsis. The hap1 of OsSTL1 was identified as the superior haplotype and a non-synonymous SNP was most likely to be the functional site. We also determined that the level of salt tolerance was improved by combining haplotypes of different genes. Our study provides a foundation for molecular breeding and functional analysis of salt tolerance in rice seedlings.

ABSTRACT

Carotid artery web has been frequently reported. However, the vertebral artery web has been less reported. It is difficult and seldom to diagnose vertebral artery web with noninvasive examinations. Here, we present a case of asymptomatic vertebral artery web diagnosed by ultrasound and confirmed by digital subtraction angiography.

ABSTRACT

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) can impair healing of diabetic foot (DF) in patients with diabetes mellitus. To determine whether carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) can predict lower limb arterial lesions in patients with DF, this cross-sectional study enrolled patients with DF at West China Hospital (China) between January 2012 and December 2015. Ultrasonography was used to measure CIMT, assess the internal carotid arteries (ICA) for plaques, and evaluate lower limb segmental arteries for stenosis. The optimal CIMT cutoff for detecting lower limb PAD was determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Factors associated with PAD were identified by logistic regression analyses. A total of 167 patients (mean age: 69.7±10.3 years; 102 men) were included. Patients with PAD were older and had higher levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein than patients without PAD (P<0.05). The area under the ROC curve was 0.747 (P<0.001). At the optimal CIMT cutoff of 0.71 mm, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were 79.65, 61.11, 81.08, and 58.93%, respectively. Compared with those without PAD, more patients with PAD had CIMT ≥0.71 mm (79.65 vs 38.89%; P<0.001) and ICA plaques (66.37vs 11.11%; P<0.001). Multivariate logistic regression revealed that age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.118; 95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 1.056-1.183; P<0.001), ICA plaques (OR: 13.452; 95%CI: 4.450-40.662; P<0.001), and CIMT ≥0.71 mm (OR: 2.802; 95%CI: 1.092-7.188; P=0.032) were associated with PAD.CIMT may be a surrogate marker of PAD in patients with DF.
