ABSTRACT

The results of a pilot investigation are presented. The study aimed to show that the presence of radioactive strontium-90 in human bone could be used as evidence of active uptake during life. In this way the time since death of the individual could be identified as occurring before or after the date when atmospheric levels of radioactive strontium were at a peak in the early 1960s. The results of this initial investigation were encouraging but further detailed analysis is required on a substantially larger sample of material spanning a more controlled time period.

ABSTRACT

Subcutaneous harvesting using an extraluminal vein dissector was used to obtain saphenous and cephalic veins for aortocoronary vein bypass grafting (CVBG) in 428 unselected consecutive patients without complications. The operative technique is simple, quick and easy to learn. Advantages of the method include expeditious harvesting, limited tissue dissection and vein handling, with minimal overt and occult blood loss. Symptomatic benefits include a considerable reduction of leg wound infection (3% superficial inflammation), comfort and improved early mobility. Reduction in late morbidity due to saphenous nerve damage (1.6%), prolonged oedema (0.7%), and delayed sinus formation were also noticeable features. Light and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) studies of 57 vein samples showed no excessive trauma to the vein wall but more specifically no evidence of distraction injury to the tributaries when compared with the more traditional dissection technique.

ABSTRACT

A case of multiple hepatic tumours in a patient treated for four years with high doses of oral contraceptives is described. Solitary hepatocellular lesions associated with conventional doses of oral contraceptives have been reported previously in twenty nine cases. Haemorrhage has been a common mode of presentation and is attributed to the marked vascularity of the lesions, an appearance referred to as peliosis hepatis. Radiographic studies show this term to be inappropriate as the vessels are of arterial origin. Another finding not previously reported is the presence of diffuse hyperplasia in the non-tumourous parts of the liver.

ABSTRACT

A fatal case following ehtyleneimine inhalation is described. Profound destructive effects on tracheobronchial cartilage were found at necropsy after an interval of apparent recovery from early phases of poisoning. The pathogenesis of these cartilaginous changes is discussed. It is proposed that they may have been due to proteases liberated from liberated from mucosal granulation tissue.
