ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: NEOSS® (Neoss Ltd., Harrogate, UK) dental implant system was introduced on the clinical arena in 2003. It is important that novel implant systems are systematically evaluated in a multicenter setting. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to follow a large number of consecutively treated patients, with NEOSS dental implant system, both clinically and radiographically. The current report constitutes the 1-year data of a planned 5-year study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included a total of 177 patients treated with 590 NEOSS implants at 13 clinics in Sweden. The material was composed of 72 males and 105 females treated for single, partial, and total edentulism. Clinical, radiographic, and subjective evaluations were performed. RESULTS: Out of 590 implants, 13 early failures have been reported, corresponding to a 1-year cumulative survival rate (CSR) of 97.8%. Evaluation of function and esthetics at the 1-year visit resulted in 100% success for function and 98% success for the esthetic outcome. The mean marginal bone loss was 0.6 mm (SD 1.1) after 1 year in clinical function. No adverse effects of the NEOSS dental implants were reported, and complications were few and similar to those reported for implant treatment in general. CONCLUSION: The CSR in the present study was 97.8%. No adverse effects of the NEOSS implants were reported, and complications during the study period were few and similar to those reported to for other well-documented implants system. Based on the present data, we conclude that NEOSS dental implant is a safe and predictable implant system. However, the high number of dropouts in the radiological evaluation must be considered when interpreting the data.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study evaluated outcome and quality of treatments with telescopic crown-retained dentures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 72 subjects (27 men and 45 women; mean age 67 years) wearing 75 telescopic crown-retained dentures (18 in the mandible and 57 in the maxilla) participated in the study. There were a total of 368 abutment teeth, 272 in the maxilla and 96 in the mandible. Each patient was clinically examined. Using the CDA evaluation system, four calibrated evaluators also examined, independently, the inner crowns for margin integrity and the superstructure for retention, occlusion, stability, wear, and esthetic appearance. Observer consistency was measured with Cohen's kappa. RESULTS: The observation period varied from 9 months to 9.3 years (mean 3.8 years). One telescopic crown-retained denture was lost, and 24 abutment teeth (7%) were extracted during the observation period. In 49 abutment teeth (13%), technical complications had occurred, and a total of four framework fractures (5%) were observed. Based on the CDA criteria, most of the characteristics were evaluated as satisfactory. The characteristics "condition of denture-supporting soft tissue" and "superstructure wear" showed the highest frequencies of not acceptable ratings, 44% and 45%, respectively. CONCLUSION: In this retrospective follow-up study, satisfactory outcome was found for tooth-supported telescopic crown-retained dentures over a mean observation period of 3.8 years.

ABSTRACT

Treatment of patients with implant-supported mandibular fixed prostheses performed according to an early loading concept has shown excellent results in several reports. The outcome of such treatments with 4 implants, in which the posteriors are distally inclined, has not been reported. This clinical report describes a 12-month evaluation of 17 consecutive patients with 68 conical Brånemark implants placed between the mental foramina according to a 1-stage surgical procedure. Fixed mandibular prostheses were connected to the implants an average of 33 days after implant placement. Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed at the time of placement of the fixed prosthesis and at a 12-month examination. Five implants were lost during the observation period, 3 before loading and 2 after prosthesis connection, rendering an implant survival rate of 93%. One patient lost her prosthesis because of a failing implant. The average marginal bone loss was 0.24 mm.
