ABSTRACT

In June and July 2021, the National Society for Histotechnology (NSH) conducted an online survey designed to assess productivity and staffing in the clinical histology laboratory. The Productivity Benchmarking Survey was developed by the NSH Quality Management Committee. The survey of histology professionals provides critical data that may be used to inform staffing decisions and develop a quality management program. To create usable data the findings were segmented by a range of variables including facility type and size, and productivity related to grossing, embedding, microtomy, and ancillary duties. This study draws a connection between perceived operational efficiencies and the presence of a program or process used to assess employees quality performance for grossing, embedding, and microtomy. A followup survey is planned to further understand these particular employee assessment programs or processes.

ABSTRACT

The National Society for Histotechnology (NSH) Quality Management Committee conducted a Workload Study in response to numerous requests by NSH society members for current information examining productivity and staffing in the clinical histology laboratory. Data collection was conducted between October 11 and 9 November 2018 of 15,848 individuals with deliverable email addresses taken from the NSH database (3.6% net email bounce rate). Survey productivity questions were segmented into key areas including grossing, embedding, microtomy and ancillary duties. From the responses, comparisons of laboratory demographics and productivity were examined by institution type and size. This report presents the data collected from the NSH Workload Study.

ABSTRACT

The field of digital pathology has rapidly expanded within the last few years with increasing adoption and growth in popularity. As digital pathology matures, it is apparent that we need well-trained individuals to manage our whole-slide imaging systems. This editorial introduces the joint National Society for Histotechnology and Digital Pathology Association online self-paced digital pathology certificate program which was launched in May 2018 that was established to meet this demand. An overview of how this program was developed, the content of the educational modules, and the way that this program is being offered is discussed.
