ABSTRACT

The effect of bright fluorescent light (115 fc) on oxygen-induced retinopathy in newborn kittens was compared with that of complete darkness and cyclic illumination of 12 hr of bright light (115 fc) and 12 hr of complete darkness. No significant difference was found in the extent of preretinal vasoproliferation and retinal ultrastructural findings among the three groups of kittens reared in different levels of illumination and a control group raised in a standard laboratory illumination level of 40 fc. These results confirmed that light is not a required factor for the development of oxygen-induced retinopathy in kittens.

ABSTRACT

Spontaneous perforation of the small intestine in the newborn is rare. In most cases the etiology is unknown. Three cases of perforation in preterm newborn infants are described. The clinical diagnosis was necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and an urgent laparotomy was performed. The histologic examination was compatible with the diagnosis of a congenital defect of the intestinal musculature. All three infants survived.

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of Down's syndrome in both dizygotic twins appears to be very rare. A case of twins of unlike sex is reported, in which chromosomal analysis showed trisomy 21 in both of them, while the parental karyotypes were normal. This is the third reported case of such a constellation, and the second one in which infant and parental chromosomal analysis was done.

ABSTRACT

The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) has not often been described in newborn infants. Of 61 infants with respiratory problems who were admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit over a six-month period from July 1978, three had SIADH, diagnosed on the basis of hyponatremia, weight gain and the excretion of highly concentrated urine. In one infant the onset of marked hyponatremia was very rapid and resulted in deep coma. The occurrence of this syndrome in 5% of infants under intensive care for neonatal respiratory problems makes it essential to monitor these infants closely for deviations in fluid and electrolyte balance.

ABSTRACT

Traumatic oesophageal perforation may occur during the intensive care of premature infants due to trauma of the laryngoscope blade, to traumatic intubation with an endotracheal tube or to forced passing of a nasogastric tube. Over a four-year period, three infants of 787 admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit were diagnosed as having this complication. The careful analysis of the position of the nasogastric tube in relation to surrounding structures can be an early clue to the diagnosis of this condition.

ABSTRACT

A 3-day-old baby girl developed septicaemia, meningitis, and necrotising fasciitis due to group A beta-haemolytic streptococcus, type M52, which was also cultured from the mother's cervix. Necrotising fasciitis is a severe infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues with infarction, necrosis, and sloughing of the affected areas. Early recognition of this condition is essential so that appropriate treatment can be given.
