ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to identify primary health care nurses' competencies when responding to hydrological disasters in rural areas. METHODS: A descriptive, exploratory and qualitative study was developed. The Critical Incidents Technique was adopted. Twenty public health nurses who worked during the flood season in the years 2014 and 2015 in a rural area in southern Brazil were interviewed. Critical incidents and requirements identified in the data gave rise to the development of the competencies. RESULTS: Thirty competencies were identified and classified in the domains of leadership and management, teamwork, health care, being community-oriented, communication, psychological support, health surveillance and education. CONCLUSIONS: Although the competencies could be related to the established international competencies for nurses in disasters, a number were described only in this study. These competencies can contribute to the education and practice of nurses in primary health care, strengthening the capacity of the profession to face flood disaster situations in rural areas.

ABSTRACT

Building nurses' resilience to complex and stressful practice environments is necessary to keep skilled nurses in the workplace and ensuring safe patient care. A unified theoretical framework titled Health Services Workplace Environmental Resilience Model (HSWERM), is presented to explain the environmental factors in the workplace that promote nurses' resilience. The framework builds on a previously-published theoretical model of individual resilience, which identified the key constructs of psychological resilience as self-efficacy, coping and mindfulness, but did not examine environmental factors in the workplace that promote nurses' resilience. This unified theoretical framework was developed using a literary synthesis drawing on data from international studies and literature reviews on the nursing workforce in hospitals. The most frequent workplace environmental factors were identified, extracted and clustered in alignment with key constructs for psychological resilience. Six major organizational concepts emerged that related to a positive resilience-building workplace and formed the foundation of the theoretical model. Three concepts related to nursing staff support (professional, practice, personal) and three related to nursing staff development (professional, practice, personal) within the workplace environment. The unified theoretical model incorporates these concepts within the workplace context, linking to the nurse, and then impacting on personal resilience and workplace outcomes, and its use has the potential to increase staff retention and quality of patient care.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: Introduction Hospital nurses play a key role in the aftermath of the occurrence of disasters and need specific competencies to work in these situations. From a global perspective, few models exist that focus on disaster nursing. PROBLEM: This study aimed to identify hospital nurses' competencies in disaster situations. METHOD: A qualitative, descriptive, exploratory study was developed using focus groups as a method of data collection. Three meetings were held from June through September 2012 with nurses who worked at a hospital used as reference for disaster situations in the South of Brazil. Thematic analysis of collected data generated the competencies. For statement standardization, a format consistent with a verb, a noun, and a complement was adopted. RESULTS: The group validated 17 competencies, which were organized according to the phases of emergency management described by the World Health Organization (WHO) and classified in domain areas of management, health care, communication, and education. CONCLUSIONS: The competencies identified in this study can contribute to the education and practice of nurses in the hospital ambience, strengthening its capacity to face disaster situations.

ABSTRACT

This poster focuses on two digital learning objects which use hypertext, animations and video. The digital learning objects for Obesity and Dyslipidemia are being evaluated through a research project implemented by the undergraduate nursing students at The Federal University do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). The project "Digital Learning Objects: Obesity and Dyslipidemia" is designed to subsidize the questions about non-communicable chronic diseases in the academic and professional routine in primary health care.
