ABSTRACT

The knowledge of the correct morphological and biochemical parameters in mute swans is an important indicator of their health status, body condition, adaptation to habitat and useful diagnostic tools in veterinary practice and ecological research. The aim of the study was to obtain hematological parameters in relation to age, sex and serum biochemistry values in wild-living mute swans. We found the significant differences in the erythrocyte count, hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in relation to age of mute swans. There were no differences in hematological values between males and females. The leukogram and H/L ratio did not vary by age and sex in swans. Among of biochemical parameters the slightly increased AST, ALP, CK, K, urea, decreased CHOL and TG values were recorded. As far as we know, this is the first study in which the morphometric parameters of blood cells in mute swans were presented. We found extremely low concentration of lead in blood (at subthreshold level). No blood parasites were found in blood smears. The analysis of body mass and biometric parameters revealed a significant differences dependent on age and sex. No differences in the scaled mass index were found. Our results represent a normal hematologic and blood chemistry values and age-sex related changes, as reference values for the mute swan.

ABSTRACT

During a 3-year surveillance study for avian influenza virus (AIV) infections at the Jeziorsko reservoir in central Poland, 549 oropharyngeal or cloacal swabs from 366 birds of 14 species belonging to 3 orders (Anseriformes, Charadriiformes and Gruiformes) were tested. AIV was detected in 14 birds (3.8%): Common Teals (12x), Mallard (1x) and Garganey (1x). Three potentially dangerous H5 AIV were detected in Common Teals (2x) and Garganey (1x) but all of them revealed a low pathogenic pathotype. A unique cleavage site amino acid motif PQREIR*GLF was found in one H5 isolate from a Garganey.

ABSTRACT

Thin SiO2 films were grown on a Ru(0001) single crystal and studied by photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy. The experimental results in combination with density functional theory calculations provide compelling evidence for the formation of crystalline, double-layer sheet silica weakly bound to a metal substrate.

ABSTRACT

The sensitivity of GAFChromic dosimetry using a conventional broad band light source densitometer has significantly been improved twofold using an inexpensive red acetate filter overlay during the densitometric measurements. This thin sheet of red acetate enhances the dosimetric analysis of radiochromic blue image distributions recorded on GAFChromic films. The combination provides higher sensitivity in the optical density measurements than the more expensive He-Ne laser-scanning densitometers.

ABSTRACT

Fine-needle biopsy is one of the method used in diagnosis of lung tumors. In this study the results of 192 biopsies performed by x-ray apparatus inspection were analysed. There was shown that lung cancer was recognized in over 50% of patients studied. In another cases non-specific inflammation (31%), lung fibrosis (1%), tuberculosis (1%), purulent inflammation (1%), blood (7%) were recognized. These results indicate for usefulness of this method in diagnosis of not only peripheral, but also central localized lung tumors.

ABSTRACT

The authors have tried to compose the characteristics of the free radicals and their role in the pathogenesis od various diseases. They show up both the ways the free radicals appear and the biochemical compounds negating their toxic effects. They stress the meaning of the dynamic equilibrium between them, and asses its value in the lung cancer pathogenesis. They also quote the examples of the medicines, which work towards neutralizing the free radicals.

ABSTRACT

Seven cases of comminuted, unstable trochanteric fracture of the femur treated with total or partial hip arthroplasty are presented. The age of patients at operation ranged from 69 to 88 years (mean 81.3). General condition of these patients was critical, the treatment used allowed for early mobilization. One patient died 9 weeks after surgery. In remaining 6 cases good functional result has been found at mean follow-up of 17 months (range 8 to 47 months). Hip joint arthroplasty for trochanteric fracture in elderly patients in poor general state allows for early mobilization.

ABSTRACT

The authors present a case of a 70-years old patients with bilateral pneumonia of pneumococcal etiology. During the treatment, after the initial improvement respiratory failure was observed and mechanical ventilations was applied. Following this procedure appeared such complications as left pneumothorax and pleural empyema. After drainage and evacuation of purulent fluid from pleural cavity the clinical improvement was observed. The case shows how pneumonia is still dangerous, especially for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

ABSTRACT

The paper presents results of treatment of 16 patients operated on because of giant cell tumor. Frequent local recurrence after curettage makes the authors to suggest more common use of the thermal or chemical destruction of the neoplastic cells to achieve oncologic sterility.

ABSTRACT

In 38 patients with atopic bronchial asthma DNCG (disodium cromoglycate) and DNCG comp. (disodium cromoglycate and reproterol hydrochloride) were applied in inhalation way. After 7 days course spirometric values were monitoring in all patients. Decrease of Raw values and increases of FEF50 and FEV1 were noticed in all patients, especially in asthmatics treated with DNCG comp. Obtained results suggest a good clinical effect and improvement of spirometric values in patients with atopic bronchial asthma during DNCG and DNCG comp. therapy.

ABSTRACT

The late results of surgical treatment of infantile scoliosis by the Harrington method have been presented in 43 patients. The patients age at surgical treatment ranged from 11 to 21 years (14.1 years in the average). The patients age at final follow up examination ranged from 18 to 34 years (25.4 years on the average). The curvature angle at operation was 102.1 degrees according to Cobb on the average. 43.7 per cent of curvature was corrected. Although an improvement of posture was present in all the patients, only 51 per cent of the patients, had good posture. After the treatment 81 per cent of the patients worked.
