ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Corneal endothelium cell density evaluation in refractive surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The corneal endothelium cell measurements by means of specular microscopy before PRK as well as, 1 month and 12 months after PRK procedures in 62 eyes have been performed. RESULTS: No statistically significant difference was found comparing corneal cell density before and after photorefractive keratectomy procedures. CONCLUSION: The excimer laser radiation used for correction of refractive errors is safe for corneal endothelium.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the usefulness of excimer laser photokeratectomy in bullous keratopathy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Treatment with excimer laser photokeratectomy was performed in 22 eyes with bullous keratopathy which developed after cataract extraction with IOL implantation. RESULTS: During 1 month follow-up a slight improvement of visual acuity, local state improvement and subjective symptoms regression were noted. This state was stable in 14 eyes for 6-12 months, in 8 eyes the recurrence of the disease occurred, but without pain symptoms. CONCLUSION: Excimer laser photokeratectomy does not restore corneal transparency but its benefit in bullous keratopathy is to decrease pain while awaiting for keratoplasty.

ABSTRACT

We have examined endothelial cell density before and 3, 6, 12 months after extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation (posterior chamber) in diabetic patients and in non-diabetics. We have not found statistically significant differences between the mean loss of endothelial cells due to surgery in diabetic and non-diabetic patients.

ABSTRACT

The observation of the corneal endothelium was performed by means of an endothelial corneal microscope before the surgical operation of the anterior segment. Endothelial microscopy was executed in eyes in which one could expect changes caused by injuries, by previous operation or by already suffered inflammatory conditions of the anterior segment as well as in order to quality the corneae of the donors for transplantation.

ABSTRACT

The central area of the corneal endothelium was examined in 130 patients after an intracapsular extraction of a senile cataract without implantation of an intraocular artificial lens, with implantation of an anterior chamber artificial lens and after an extracapsular extraction of senile cataract with implantation of a posterior chamber artificial lens. The authors used the endothelial contact microscope Copper Vision with an endothelial cell counter from MLC Technologies. The mean proportional loss of the corneal endothelial cells for the 1st group after 1 month amounted 11.6%, after 6 months from operation 13.0%; for the 2nd group after the 1st month 15.0%; for the 3d group after 1 month 13.5% and after 6 months 17.0%.

ABSTRACT

Discussed are the results of kerato-prosthetics in 12 cases of severe post-burn leukoma by means of a new model of keratoprosthesis with a carbon bearing. The material for construction of the carrier part of the prosthesis is based on carbon fibres and Polish technology worked up by the Institute of Material Engineering of the Mining-Metallurgic Academy in Krakow.

ABSTRACT

The examination of the corneal endothelium with a posttraumatic scar was performed by means of a corneal microscope with an endothelial cell counter in patients with traumatic cataract before its removal with simultaneous implantation of an artificial intraocular lens. It was established that the density of the endothelial cells in these eyes before surgery amounted 950-3000/mm2. The density of the cells below this value creates a danger of formation of bullous keratopathy after the surgical intervention.
