ABSTRACT

Herein, we report on the design, synthesis, physical and chemical properties, and organic photovoltaic (OPV) device performance of four new cathode interlayer (CIL) materials based on bay N-annulated perylene diimides. Starting from the previously reported N-annulated perylene diimide (PDIN-H), the N-position was functionalized with a benzyl and pentafluorobenzyl group to make PDIN-B and PDIN-FB, respectively. Similarly, starting from the previously reported cyanated N-annulated perylene diimide (CN-PDIN-H), the N-position was functionalized with a benzyl and pentafluorobenzyl group to make CN-PDIN-B and CN-PDIN-FB, respectively. The materials exhibit solubility in the green solvent, ethyl acetate, and thus were processed into thin films using ethyl acetate as the solvent. The optoelectronic properties were assessed for both solution and film, and the electrochemical properties were probed in solution. To validate the potential as electron transporting layers, each film was used in conventional OPVs as the CIL with processing from ethyl acetate, while using a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) comprised of PM6:Y6. High power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 13% were achieved compared to control devices using the standard PFN-Br CIL.

ABSTRACT

Carbazole- and fluorene-substituted benzidine blocks have been functionalized with two different solubilizing pendant groups, in order to enhance the material's solubility in greener solvents. Preserving the optical and electrochemical properties, the aromatic function and substitution showed an important influence on the solvent affinity, achieving concentrations up to 150 mg/mL in o-xylenes for the glycol-containing materials and decent solubility in alcohols for the compounds functionalized with ionic chains. The latter solution proved to be ideal for the preparation of luminescence slot-die coating film on top of flexible-substrates up to 33 cm×2 cm. As a proof of concept, the materials have been implemented in different organic electronic devices, highlighting the low turn-on voltage (4 V) presented by organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), which is comparable with vacuum-processed devices. A structure-solubility relationship and a synthetic strategy are disentangled in this manuscript to tailor organic semiconductors and adapt their solubility towards the desired solvent and application.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To develop and begin establishing evidence for validity of an instrument to assess the quality of induction in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey and video scoring. ANIMALS AND POPULATION: A total of 51 veterinary anesthesia personnel, four board-certified anesthesiologists and videos of induction of anesthesia in 18 dogs. METHODS: In Part 1, an online survey was sent to veterinary anesthesia personnel to solicit expressions and words that they associate with induction of anesthesia. These expressions were evaluated by four anesthesiologists to create a composite scale (Auburn Induction Scale). In Part 2, 18 videos were reviewed by the same four anesthesiologists on two separate occasions. The videos were scored using the Auburn Induction Scale, a simple descriptive scale (SDS) and a visual analog scale (VAS). Intra-rater and inter-rater reliability was measured using an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The survey yielded 51 responses that were condensed into 133 expressions. The four anesthesiologists created 18 items incorporating the 133 expressions. The mean ± standard deviation intra-rater reliability ICC was 0.81 ± 0.08 for the Auburn Induction Scale, 0.71 ± 0.02 for the SDS and 0.71 ± 0.08 for the VAS for all raters. The mean ± standard deviation inter-rater reliability ICC was 0.69 ± 0.04 for the Auburn Induction Scale, 0.61 ± 0.05 for the SDS and 0.60 ± 0.06 for the VAS. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In a research setting, widespread use of this scale may be helpful in increasing the accuracy of data and improving agreement between studies assessing induction of anesthesia in dogs. The results of this study have yielded a composite scale that is more reliable between and among raters than a unidimensional scale.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The Internet provides a powerful potential tool for sexual predators. Experiencing trauma, including sexual abuse, can increase child and adolescent risk of experiencing online sexual solicitation. METHOD: A retrospective chart review was conducted for the detailed information of all children and adolescents aged 8-18 years presenting to the Child Advocacy Center of large, tertiary care, Midwestern U.S. pediatric hospital with concerns of sexual abuse. RESULTS: Three-hundred twenty-five children and adolescents were seen in the Child Advocacy Center during the 9 months; 139 (42.8%) denied talking to anyone online that they had not met offline (face to face in real life), 88 (27.1%) reported talking to individuals online that they had not met offline but never talking about sex; 65 (20%) reported online sexual solicitation with individuals they had not met offline; and 33 (10.2%) reported highest-risk behaviors online involving meeting someone offline or having sex with someone offline whom they had met online. DISCUSSION: The number of youth involved in online sexual solicitation illustrates that children who have been sexually abused are at increased risk for sexual solicitation. This study also suggests that young children are vulnerable to online sexual solicitation. Youth engaged in these concerning online behaviors with individuals of all ages.

ABSTRACT

Tracking protein corona (PC) formation on the surface of nanoparticles (NPs) is a prerequisite for successful design of next generation nanocarriers with predictable fate and behavior. However, PC formation has mostly been investigated for plasma proteins without considering potential competition with the extravascular proteins either when the NPs exit the blood circulation or when they are injected extravascularly. This study investigates the deposition of collagen, an extravascular protein that is the most abundant in the body, and albumin, the most abundant vascular protein, on the surface of gold (Au) NPs using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy with the support of mathematical modeling. Moreover, a novel spectroscopic approach to determining the protein-NP binding constants and surface occupancy is presented. We show that albumin and collagen have drastically different affinities for Au NPs. Our data demonstrates that the surface bound albumin can be exchanged with collagen confirming the dynamic nature of PC in the extravascular milieu. We propose that future PC investigations in the framework of drug delivery should rely on understanding of the NP transit in the body, and include competition experiments with relevant vascular and extravascular proteins. Furthermore, our results that reveal very strong binding of collagen to AuNPs may lay the foundation for designing long circulating collagen-coated NPs with minimal surface adsorption of plasma proteins and, thus, reduced immune recognition.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare, describe and assess the level of validation of all instruments measuring quality of induction and recovery from anesthesia in dogs. DATABASES USED: A search was performed using the electronic database PubMed to find articles containing an induction quality scale, a recovery quality scale or both in dogs. Articles not directly accessible through PubMed were obtained through the Auburn University Library website and Google Scholar. The phrases 'induction scoring systems dogs', 'recovery scoring systems dogs', 'anesthetic induction score dogs', and 'anesthetic recovery score dogs' were used for searches using the 'best match search' function. The time frame searched was from 1980 to May 2020. The search was conducted from March 2020 to May 2020. CONCLUSIONS: A thoroughly tested and validated scale for measuring the quality of induction and recovery does not exist in the current veterinary literature. A large disagreement exists between studies on the use of induction and recovery scales, and many have reported inconsistent results with current instruments. It is recommended that an induction and recovery scale intended for wide-scale use be constructed and tested extensively for psychometric validation and reliability.

ABSTRACT

Colleges and schools of education serve K12 educators very well in many areas and there are instructional design programs housed in traditional academic units that produce high-caliber scholars and researchers that impact our field. However, this article suggests that partnerships between university innovation hubs and K12 schools fill a gap of programming focused on developing practical skills related to digital transformation of learning environments. This article presents a case study of an innovation hub developing such programming. Anderson University (SC)'s Center for Innovation and Digital Learning (CIDL) staff began offering external professional development offerings for K12 educators and leaders who were seeking to use design thinking and emerging technologies as the university had been doing with its own initiatives, such as its one-to-one program. Over time, these relationships led to the development of a uniquely structured professional master's degree intentionally aligned to national K12 and post-secondary educational technology association standards as well as state online teacher endorsement criteria. The program is administered and taught by instructional design personnel in the CIDL, a university innovation hub outside of a traditional academic unit. The article offers insight into the development and alignment of external programming as well as specific insights from the learners, instructors, and the program leaders: (1) the importance of having practitioners as faculty in digital transformation programs; (2) the role of practitioner-faculty in professional community development; and (3) the organizational advantages and impact. Implications and further research opportunities around this type of programming will be identified as well.
