ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms is more prevalent in middle-aged and older populations, and the development of Internet technology has brought new challenges and opportunities for the mental health of this group. This study aims to explore the bidirectional relationship between Internet device diversity and levels of depressive symptoms through longitudinal data analysis, as well as investigate the mediating role of social participation. METHODS: Data for the analysis was retrieved from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS) in 2015, 2018, and 2020, which included 9259 middle-aged and older adults. The sum of the number of devices mentioned by each participant was calculated to assess the diversity of internet device use, a weighted total score of how frequently and to what extent individuals had participated in various social activities in the past month was calculated to measure the social engagement, and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale was used to calculate depressive symptoms. A cross-lagged mediation model and bivariate correlation analysis were employed to examine the longitudinal relationships among depressive symptoms, internet device diversity, and social participation. Age, gender, highest education level, and chronic health conditions were adjusted as covariates. RESULTS: The results from the three waves of longitudinal data revealed mutual predictive relationships among internet device diversity, social participation, and depressive symptoms. The mediating effect was significant (ß = -0.612, 95 % CI -0.796 to -0.429), with significant gender differences observed. Furthermore, our findings indicated that social participation functioned as a protective factor against depressive symptoms, and the association between social participation and depressive symptoms was not a straightforward linear relationship. Older adults exhibiting a high level of social participation exhibited an elevated risk of depressive symptoms compared to those with a lower level of social participation. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that there is a relationship between internet device diversity and lower levels of depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults in China. Social participation mediates the relationship between internet device diversity and depressive symptoms, and different levels of social engagement have different effects on depressive symptoms. It is recommended to increase support for social participation among middle-aged and older adults, strengthen structural social capital, and better leverage the use of the internet to reduce depressive symptoms levels and promote the physical and mental well-being of this population.

ABSTRACT

Industrial lignin is a waste product of the paper industry, which contains a large amount of oxygen group structure, and can be used to treat industrial wastewater containing Cr(VI). However, lignin has very low reactivity, so how to enhance its adsorption performance is a major challenge at present. In this study, a two-stage hydrothermal and activation strategy was used to activate the lignin activity and doping S element to prepare high-performance S-doped lignin-based polyporous carbon (S-LPC). The results show that the surface of S-LPC is rich in S and O groups and has a well-developed pore structure, which is very beneficial to Cr(VI) uptake -reduction and mass transfer on the material. In the wastewater, the utmost adsorption potential of Cr(VI) by S-LPC achieved 882.83 mg/g. After 7 cycles of regeneration, the adsorption of S-LPC decreased by only approximately 18 %. Ion competition experiments showed that S-LPC has excellent specificity for Cr(VI) adsorption. In factory wastewater, the adsorption performance of S-LPC for Cr(VI) remained above 95 %, which shows the excellent performance of S-LPC in practical applications. The results are of great significance for green chemical utilization of waste lignin, treatment of industrial wastewater and sustainable development.

ABSTRACT

Background: Electroacupuncture (EA) has been shown to promote functional recovery after cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, the contribution of mitochondrial dynamics to recovery remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether mitochondrial dynamics are involved in the effects of EA on cerebral I/R injury. Methods: The rats with cerebral I/R injury were established by the middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion. Subsequently, EA was applied to Baihui (GV20) and Dazhui (GV14) acupoints, with 2 Hz/5 Hz in frequency, 1.0 mA in intensity, 20 min each time, once a day for seven consecutive days. The therapeutic outcomes were assessed by modified neurological severity score (mNSS), 2,3,5-Triphenyte-trazolium chloride (TTC) staining, and hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. Mitochondrial morphology was observed under transmission electron microscopy. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content and ATP synthases (ATPases) activity were evaluated to measure mitochondrial function using ELISA. Finally, mitochondrial dynamics-related molecules, including dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1), fission 1 (Fis1), mitofusin 1 (Mfn1), mitofusin 2 (Mfn2), and optic atrophy 1 (OPA1), were detected by Western blot and immunofluorescence staining. Results: Cerebral I/R injury induced neurological dysfunction, cerebral infarction and neuronal injury, all of which were ameliorated by EA. And EA improved mitochondrial morphology and function. Moreover, EA altered the balance of mitochondrial dynamics. Specifically, the data showed a significant decrease in the expression of Drp1 and Fis1, leading to the inhibition of mitochondrial fission. Additionally, Mfn1, Mfn2 and Opa1, which are related to mitochondrial fusion, were effectively promoted after EA treatment. However, sham EA did not show any neuroprotective effects in rats with cerebral I/R injury. Conclusions: In summary, our study indicates that the balance of mitochondrial dynamics is crucial for EA therapy to treat cerebral I/R injury.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: With the discovery of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), it is considered as a valuable tool for supporting the treatment of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). It has gained increasing attention, particularly during the COVID-19 epidemic. However, to date, no relevant bibliometric research on the association between ECMO and ARDS (ECMO-ARDS) has been reported. Our study aimed to summarize the knowledge structure and research focus of ECMO-ARDS through a bibliometric analysis. Method: Publications related to ECMO-ARDS from 2000 to 2022 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Research data underwent bibliometric and visual analysis by using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and one online analysis platform. By analyzing the countries, institutions, journals, authors, the geographic distribution of research contributions as well as the leading institutions and researchers in this field were identified. Additionally, prominent journals and highly cited publications were highlighted, indicating their influence and significance in the field. Moreover, the co-citation references and co-occurring keywords provided valuable information on the major research topics, trends, and potential emerging frontiers. Results: A total of 1,565 publications from 60 countries/regions were retrieved. The annual publication number over time revealed exponential growth trends (R2 = 0.9511). The United States was dominant in ECMO-ARDS research, whereas the Univ Toronto was most productive institution. Prof Combes A published the most publications in this area. ASAIO Journal and Intensive Care Medicine were the most active and co-cited journals, respectively. Reference co-citation analysis showed that current research focus has shifted to COVID-related ARDS, multi-center studies, as well as prone positioning. Apart from the keywords "ECMO" and "ARDS", other keywords appearing at high frequency in the research field were "COVID-19", "mechanical ventilation", "extracorporeal life support", "respiratory failure", "veno-venous ECMO", "SARS-CoV-2", "outcome". Among them, keywords like "mortality", "veno-venous ECMO", "epidemiology", "obesity", "coagulopathy", "lung ultrasound", "inhalation injury", "noninvasive ventilation", "diagnosis", "heparin", "cytokine storm" has received growing interest in current research and also has the potential to continue to become research hotspots in the near future. Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis offers a comprehensive understanding of the current state of ECMO-ARDS research and can serve as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders in exploring future research directions and fostering collaborations in this critical field.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous autoimmune disease with an unsatisfactory state of treatment. We aim to explore novel targets for SLE from a genetic standpoint. METHODS: Cis-expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) for whole blood from 31,684 samples provided by the eQTLGen Consortium as well as two large SLE cohorts were utilized for screening and validating genes causally associated with SLE. Colocalization analysis was employed to further investigate whether changes in the expression of risk genes, as indicated by GWAS signals, influence the occurrence and development of SLE. Targets identified for drug development were evaluated for potential side effects using a phenome-wide association study (PheWAS). Based on the multiple databases, we explored the interactions between drugs and genes for drug prediction and the assessment of current medications. RESULTS: The analysis comprised 5427 druggable genes in total. The two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) in the discovery phase identified 20 genes causally associated with SLE and validated 8 genes in the replication phase. Colocalization analysis ultimately identified five genes (BLK, HIST1H3H, HSPA1A, IL12A, NEU1) with PPH4 > 0.8. PheWAS further indicated that drugs acting on BLK and IL12A are less likely to have potential side effects, while HSPA1A and NEU1 were associated with other traits. Four genes (BLK, HSPA1A, IL12A, NEU1) have been targeted for drug development in autoimmune diseases and other conditions. CONCLUSIONS: .This study identified five genes as therapeutic targets for SLE. Repurposing and developing drugs targeting these genes is anticipated to improve the existing treatment state for SLE. Key Points • We identified five gene targets of priority for the treatment of SLE, with BLK and IL12A indicating fewer side effects. • Among the existing drugs that target these candidate genes, Ustekinumab, Ebdarokimab, and Briakinumab (targeting the IL12 gene) and CD24FC (targeting HSPA1A) may potentially be repurposed for the treatment of SLE.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Extensive research efforts have been dedicated to elucidating the intricate pathways by which gastrointestinal microbiota and their metabolites exert influence on the processes of bone formation. Nonetheless, a notable gap exists in the literature concerning a bibliometric analysis of research trends at the nexus of gastrointestinal microbiota and bone metabolism. Methods: To address this scholarly void, the present study employs a suite of bibliometric tools including online platforms, CiteSpace and VOSviewer to scrutinize the pertinent literature in the realm of gastrointestinal microbiota and bone metabolism. Results and discussion: Examination of the temporal distribution of publications spanning from 2000 to 2023 reveals a discernible upward trajectory in research output, characterized by an average annual growth rate of 19.2%. Notably, China and the United States emerge as primary contributors. Predominant among contributing institutions are Emory University, Harvard University, and the University of California. Pacifici R from Emory University contributed the most research with 15 publications. In the realm of academic journals, Nutrients emerges as the foremost publisher, followed closely by Frontiers in Microbiology and PLOS One. And PLOS One attains the highest average citations of 32.48. Analysis of highly cited papers underscores a burgeoning interest in the therapeutic potential of probiotics or probiotic blends in modulating bone metabolism by augmenting host immune responses. Notably, significant research attention has coalesced around the therapeutic interventions of probiotics, particularly Lactobacillus reuteri, in osteoporosis, as well as the role of gastrointestinal microbiota in the etiology and progression of osteoarthritis. Keyword analysis reveals prevalent terms including gut microbiota, osteoporosis, bone density, probiotics, inflammation, SCFAs, metabolism, osteoarthritis, calcium absorption, obesity, double-blind, prebiotics, mechanisms, postmenopausal women, supplementation, risk factors, oxidative stress, and immune system. Future research endeavors warrant a nuanced exploration of topics such as inflammation, obesity, SCFAs, postmenopausal osteoporosis, skeletal muscle, oxidative stress, double-blind trials, and pathogenic mechanisms. In summary, this study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of global research on the interplay between gastrointestinal microbiota and bone metabolism, offering valuable insights for scholars, particularly nascent researchers, embarking on analogous investigations within this domain.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, there have been extensive debates regarding the charging mechanism of MnO2 cathodes in aqueous Zn electrolytes. The discussion centered on several key aspects including the identity of the charge carriers contributing to the overall capacity, the nature of the electrochemical process, and the role of the zinc hydroxy films that are reversibly formed during the charging/discharging. Intense studies are also devoted to understanding the effect of the Mn2+ additive on the performance of the cathodes. Nevertheless, it seems that a consistent explanation of the α-MnO2 charging mechanism is still lacking. To address this, a step-by-step analysis of the MnO2 cathodes is conducted. Valuable information is obtained by using in situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (EQCM-D) monitoring, supplemented by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) in Characterization of Materials, and pH measurements. The findings indicate that the charging mechanism is dominated by the insertion of H3O+ ions, while no evidence of Zn2+ intercalation is found. The role of the Mn2+ additive in promoting the generation of protons by forming MnOOH, enhancing the stability of Zn/α-MnO2 batteries is thoroughly investigated. This work provides a comprehensive overview on the electrochemical and the chemical reactions associated with the α-MnO2 electrodes, and will pave the way for further development of aqueous cathodes for Zn-ion batteries.

ABSTRACT

Self-vibrating systems obtaining energy from their surroundings to sustain motion can offer great potential in micro-robots, biomedicine, radar systems, and amusement equipment owing to their adaptability, efficiency, and sustainability. However, there is a growing need for simpler, faster-responding, and easier-to-control systems. In the study, we theoretically present an advanced light-actuated liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) fiber-mass system which can initiate self-sliding motion along a rigid circular track under constant light exposure. Based on an LCE dynamic model and the theorem of angular momentum, the equations for dynamic control of the system are deduced to investigate the dynamic behavior of self-sliding. Numerical analyses show that the theoretical LCE fiber-mass system operates in two distinct states: a static state and a self-sliding state. The impact of various dimensionless variables on the self-sliding amplitude and frequency is further investigated, specifically considering variables like light intensity, initial tangential velocity, the angle of the non-illuminated zone, and the inherent properties of the LCE material. For every increment of π/180 in the amplitude, the elastic coefficient increases by 0.25% and the angle of the non-illuminated zone by 1.63%, while the light intensity contributes to a 20.88% increase. Our findings reveal that, under constant light exposure, the mass element exhibits a robust self-sliding response, indicating its potential for use in energy harvesting and other applications that require sustained periodic motion. Additionally, this system can be extended to other non-circular curved tracks, highlighting its adaptability and versatility.

ABSTRACT

Microbial α-L-fucosidases catalyse the hydrolysis of terminal α-L-fucosidic linkages and can perform transglycosylation reactions. Based on sequence identity, α-L-fucosidases are classified in glycoside hydrolases (GHs) families of the carbohydrate-active enzyme database. Here we explored the sequence-function space of GH29 fucosidases. Based on sequence similarity network (SSN) analyses, 15 GH29 α-L-fucosidases were selected for functional characterisation. HPAEC-PAD and LC-FD-MS/MS analyses revealed substrate and linkage specificities for α1,2, α1,3, α1,4 and α1,6 linked fucosylated oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates, consistent with their SSN clustering. The structural basis for the substrate specificity of GH29 fucosidase from Bifidobacterium asteroides towards α1,6 linkages and FA2G2 N-glycan was determined by X-ray crystallography and STD NMR. The capacity of GH29 fucosidases to carry out transfucosylation reactions with GlcNAc and 3FN as acceptors was evaluated by TLC combined with ESI-MS and NMR. These experimental data supported the use of SSN to further explore the GH29 sequence-function space through machine-learning models. Our lightweight protein language models could accurately allocate test sequences in their respective SSN clusters and assign 34,258 non-redundant GH29 sequences into SSN clusters. It is expected that the combination of these computational approaches will be used in the future for the identification of novel GHs with desired specificities.

INTRODUCTION: The Weight-Adjusted Waist Index (WWI) is a new indicator of obesity that is associated with all-cause mortality in Asian populations. Our study aimed to investigate the linear and non-linear associations between WWI and all-cause mortality in non-Asian populations in the United States, and whether WWI was superior to traditional obesity indicators as a predictor of all-cause mortality. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study using data from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), involving 18,592 participants. We utilized Cox proportional hazard models to assess the association between WWI, BMI, WC, and the risk of all-cause mortality, and performed subgroup analyses and interaction tests. We also employed a receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve study to evaluate the effectiveness of WWI, BMI, and WC in predicting all-cause mortality. RESULTS: After adjusting for confounders, WWI, BMI, and WC were positively associated with all-cause mortality. The performance of WWI, BMI, and WC in predicting all-cause mortality yielded AUCs of 0.697, 0.524, and 0.562, respectively. The data also revealed a U-shaped relationship between WWI and all-cause mortality. Race and cancer modified the relationship between WWI and all-cause mortality, with the relationship being negatively correlated in African Americans and cancer patients. CONCLUSIONS: In non-Asian populations in the United States, there is a U-shaped relationship between WWI and all-cause mortality, and WWI outperforms BMI and WC as a predictor of all-cause mortality. These findings may contribute to a better understanding and prediction of the relationship between obesity and mortality, and provide support for effective obesity management strategies.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effect of Tongdu Tiaoshen acupuncture (acupuncture for promoting the circulation of the governor vessel and regulating the spirit) for subjective tinnitus, and explore its potential mechanism. METHODS: A total of 92 patients with subjective tinnitus were randomly divided into an acupuncture group (46 cases, 5 cases dropped out) and a medication group (46 cases, 2 cases dropped out). The acupuncture group received Tongdu Tiaoshen acupuncture at Shuigou (GV 26), Yintang (GV 24+), Shenting (GV 24), Baihui (GV 20), Fengfu (GV 16), Dazhui (GV 14) and Zhongzhu (TE 3), Tinghui (GB 2), Yifeng (TE 17) on the affected side, 30 min each time, once every other day, 3 times a week. The medication group was orally administered ginkgo biloba leaves tablets (40 mg each time) and mecobalamin tablets (0.5 mg each time), 3 times a day. Both groups were treated for 4 weeks. The scores of tinnitus severity, tinnitus loudness visual analogue scale (VAS) and depression anxiety stress scale-21(DASS-21) before and after treatment were observed in the two groups, serum level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) before and after treatment in the two groups was detected, and the clinical effect was evaluated in the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment,the scores of tinnitus severity, tinnitus loudness VAS and DASS-21 were decreased compared with those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.01), and the scores in the acupuncture group were lower than those in the medication group (P<0.05). After treatment, the serum level of BDNF was decreased compared with that before treatment in the two groups (P<0.01), and the serum level of BDNF in the acupuncture group was lower than that in the medication group (P<0.05). The total effective rate of the acupuncture group was 82.9% (34/41), which was higher than 70.5% (31/44) in the medication group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Tongdu Tiaoshen acupuncture could improve the severity of tinnitus, tinnitus loudness and negative emotion in patients with subjective tinnitus. Its mechanism may be related to the regulation of serum level of BDNF and thus affect auditory central plasticity.
