ABSTRACT

We report the generation of passively harmonic mode-locked pulses using a 1.06 µm semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) in a figure-eight laser configuration operated in the all-normal-dispersion regime. Different orders of harmonic mode-locking can be obtained from 30 MHz to 12.02 GHz by changing the injection current of the SOA from 80 to 660 mA together with the adjustment of polarization controllers. The highest pulse repetition rate increases almost linearly with the SOA current. As SOA current is set to 660 mA, we obtain the intracavity power of 46 mW at the highest repetition rate of 12.02 GHz, corresponding to the 1202th harmonic of the fundamental mode-locking frequency. To our best knowledge, this is the lowest intracavity power to generate the highest repetition rate with a passively mode-locked laser in the all-normal-dispersion regime.

ABSTRACT

This work demonstrates the suppression of chaos in a Nd:YVO(4) laser by biharmonical pump modulation (the first for chaos-inducing and the second for chaos-suppressing). The laser exhibits chaotic behavior when only the first signal is applied for pump modulation and its frequency is adjusted close to the relaxation-oscillation frequency. Adding the second signal with subhamonic and a specific phase difference to the first modulation signal will reshape the modulated waveform of the pump beam to suppress the aforementioned chaotic behavior. The initial phase of the second harmonic perturbation plays an important role in the suppression of chaos. This result is confirmed by numerical simulation.

ABSTRACT

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction has been implicated in depression pathology. In the present study, we used a chronic mild stress (CMS) animal model of depression to examine the responses of three strains of rats that have different HPA axis responsiveness; and whether the behavioral changes observed are correlated with changes in hippocampal cell proliferation and survival. In addition, in most of the CMS experiments the rats are kept in singly housed condition. Since rats are social animals we also examined whether prolonged single housing condition affects the behavior of the rats. The results showed that rats with a hyperactive HPA axis, the inbred Fischer (F344) rat, were the most responsive to CMS. The inbred Lewis (LEW) rat, which has a hypoactive HPA axis, did not show anhedonia after CMS treatment but showed other signs of distress. The responses of the outbred Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were variable; this strain was very sensitive to the single housing condition. Prolonged single housing condition itself could induce helplessness behavior in the rats. The results from hippocampal cell proliferation of the three strains indicated that cell proliferation was not related to anhedonia induced by CMS. We conclude that F344 rat is the strain most sensitive to CMS treatment and is probably the stain of choice for CMS experiments.

ABSTRACT

We propose an operation switchable ring-cavity erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) via intra-cavity polarization control. By using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror in the EDFL cavity, stable Q-switching, Q-switched mode-locking, continuous-wave mode-locking, pulse splitting, and harmonic mode-locking pulses can be manipulated simply by detuning a polarization controller while keeping the pump power at the same level. All EDFL operation states can be obtained under the polarization angles detuning within 180 degrees. Continuous-wave mode-locking of EDFL with 800-fs pulsewidth repeated at 4 MHz has been obtained, for which the output pulse energy is 0.5 nJ and the peak power is 625 W. Interaction between solitons and the accompanied non-soliton component will lead to either pulse splitting or 5th-order harmonic mode-locking at repetition rate of 20 MHz.

ABSTRACT

The dopamine (DA) efflux in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) can be modulated by the interaction between afferent norepinephrine (NE) and somatodendritic DA in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). However, it is unclear how locally administered amphetamine (AMPH) or cocaine in the VTA results in discrepant response of DA efflux in the mPFC. In this study, intra-VTA infusion of AMPH (1000 microM) or cocaine (200 microM) in anesthetized rats was employed to study the concurrent profile of extracellular DA level in the VTA and mPFC. In addition, the extracellular NE levels during the intra-VTA infusion of these two psychostimulants were analyzed to compare their effects on prefrontal DA efflux. During the intra-VTA infusion of AMPH, both extracellular DA and NE increased significantly in the VTA (270 +/- 12% and 819 +/- 40%, respectively). Meanwhile, the DA efflux in the mPFC elevated significantly. During the intra-VTA infusion of cocaine, the extracellular DA and NE in the VTA also increased (271 +/- 21% and 150 +/- 15%, respectively). However, the DA efflux decreased significantly in the mPFC. Noteworthy, the increase of extracellular NE in the VTA was much more robust via AMPH infusion, as compared with cocaine. It is suggested that AMPH and cocaine enhance the extracellular NE concentrations in the VTA in different magnitudes, which in turn contribute to discrepant profiles of distal DA efflux in the mPFC.

ABSTRACT

By examining beam patterns, temporal pulse forms, and radio-frequency spectra as functions of resonator configuration and pump power, we found that a passively mode-locked Nd:GdVO4 laser exhibited four main regimes of operation that were single-transverse-mode Q-switched mode locking (QSML), single-transverse-mode continuous-wave mode locking (CWML), multiple-transverse-modes QSML, and multiple-transverse-modes CWML. The effect of multiple transverse modes on CWML was giving rise to amplitude instability in the pulse train. In the regime of multiple-transverse-modes QSML, we observed the phenomenon of spatiotemporal dynamics that spatial patterns vary with the time.

ABSTRACT

Repeated treatment with psychostimulant drugs induces enduring behavioral sensitization and neuroadaptations which may play an important role in the development of drug addiction. However, different number and time course in drug administration and various lengths of drug withdrawal were employed in the literature, and there were inconsistent findings in the profile of extracellular dopamine level related to behavioral sensitization. Therefore, the effects of the number of drug exposure and the length of drug withdrawal period on the sensitized behavioral response were investigated in this study. Various lengths of amphetamine (AMPH) withdrawal (1, 3 and 5 days) after a single local administration of AMPH to bilateral ventral tegmental area (VTA) were used to observe the locomotor activity response. Besides, different amounts of administration of intra-VTA AMPH were given (1, 2 and 3 times of injection) to monitor the profile of travel distance and stereotypic movements of rats after 7 days of drug withdrawal. An early and short-lived behavioral sensitization to the single intra-VTA AMPH administration was induced. In the repeated treatment group, more drug exposures were associated with escalating and robust levels of travel distance after 7 days of drug withdrawal. The authors speculated that the transient and, a later augmented locomotor activity response might represent respective phases in the development of behavioral sensitization, which in turn contributed to the formation of more lasting behavioral and neuroplastic changes associated with drug addiction.

ABSTRACT

Under degenerate resonator configuration and tightly focused pump beam in a linear-cavity solid-state laser, the spatial hole-burning effect can be suppressed. This laser can attain very high intensity in the gain medium due to shrinkage of its beam waist to match the pump beam and therefore most of its gain is depleted even by a standing wave. This was demonstrated by a simulation with spatial dependent rate equations and experiment results of a plano-concave Nd:YVO4 laser. The suppression effect was observed up to 20 times the pump threshold.

ABSTRACT

Spontaneous generation of giant pulses was observed from a diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser with a plane-concave resonator by adjusting the cavity length near the hemispherical resonator configuration and misaligning the cavity axis with respect to the pump beam. Self-pulsation occurs because of the beating among near degenerate modes being tuned to resonate with the relaxation oscillation of laser modes. By using a concave mirror of 10-mm radius of curvature, giant pulses were obtained at approximately 10 kHz with pulse widths as short as 2.4 ns corresponding to an increase in the peak power of more than 4x10 to the 4th times over the cw level.

ABSTRACT

I show that an axially pumped solid-state laser is able to support off-axis beams in a plane-concave cavity when the cavity length is adjusted within a region close to the hemispherical resonator configuration. These beams are characterized by the fact that even if an object is placed inside the cavity on axis in front of the concave mirror they can still oscillate off-axially in a V-shape path. One can further select and manipulate the desired off-axis beam by inserting a mask into the cavity. Experimental observations of cavity-length-dependent behavior of an Nd: YVO(4) laser at different pump power show that the gain-assisted self-image property in the vicinity of the hemispherical resonator configuration is responsible for the formation of these beams.
