ABSTRACT

Background: The prevalence of mental health issues has been gradually increasing among college students in recent years. Improvements in mental health can be achieved through changes in daily behavior and the use of psychological counseling. This study aims to investigate the relationship between health-promoting behaviors and negative emotions among college freshmen as they enter the university. It also examines the impact of various sub-dimensions of health-promoting behaviors and other factors on the negative emotions (stress, anxiety, and depression) experienced by college freshmen. Methods: Using the Negative Emotion and Health-Promoting Behavior scales, a 7-month longitudinal study was conducted on 4,252 college freshmen, with collection of data at two time points (T1: November 12, 2021; T2: June 17, 2022). Out of this longitudinal study, 3,632 valid samples were obtained. This research aimed to explore the association and impact between negative emotions and the level of health-promoting behaviors among college students during their time at the university. Results: ① There were significant differences in the levels of health-promoting behaviors and negative emotions over the course of 7 months (P < 0.05). Health-promoting behaviors were found to have a significant negative correlation with negative emotions (P < 0.05). ② Negative emotions at T1 significantly negatively predicted health-promoting behaviors at T2 (ß = -0.11, P < 0.01), while health-promoting behaviors at T1 significantly negatively predicted negative emotions at T2 (ß = -0.12, P < 0.001). ③ Stress management (ß = -0.104, P < 0.05; ß = -0.087, P < 0.05), self-actualization (ß = -0.282, P < 0.01; ß = -0.260, P < 0.05), health responsibility (ß = -0.057, P < 0.05; ß = -0.088, P < 0.05), and interpersonal relations (ß = 0.068, P < 0.01; ß = 0.138, P < 0.05) were important components in improving stress and anxiety. Self-actualization (ß = -0.437, P < 0.001), exercise (ß = 0.048, P < 0.001), nutrition (ß = 0.044, P < 0.001), and interpersonal relations (ß = 0.065, P < 0.001) were important components in improving depression. ④ Gender, place of household registration, and whether the individual is the only child were significant factors affecting negative emotions in college freshmen. Conclusion: The level of health-promoting behaviors is an important indicator for assessing the negative emotional states of college freshmen. Enhancing health-promoting behaviors across various dimensions can help alleviate different types of negative emotions. Gender, place of household registration, and being the only child are significant factors that influence negative emotions.

ABSTRACT

Importance: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been considered a promising treatment for musculoskeletal disorders. The effects of PRP on clinical outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) are controversial. Objective: To compare subjective outcomes and graft maturity in patients undergoing ACLR with and without postoperative intra-articular PRP injection. Design, Setting, and Participants: This surgeon- and investigator-masked randomized clinical trial included patients treated at a national medical center in China who were aged 16 to 45 years and scheduled to undergo ACLR. Participants were enrolled between March 21, 2021, and August 18, 2022, and followed up for 12 months, with the last participant completing follow-up on August 28, 2023. Interventions: Participants were randomized 1:1 to the PRP group (n = 60), which received 3 doses of postoperative intra-articular PRP injection at monthly intervals, or to the control group (n = 60), which did not receive postoperative PRP injection. Both groups had the same follow-up schedule. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was the mean score for 4 subscales of the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS4) (range, 0-100, with higher scores indicating better knee function and fewer symptoms) at 12 months postoperatively. Secondary outcomes were patient-reported outcomes, graft maturity (on magnetic resonance imaging), and physical examinations at 3, 6, and 12 months. Results: Among the 120 randomized participants (mean [SD] age, 29.0 [8.0] years; 84 males [70%]), 114 (95%) were available for the primary outcome analysis. The mean KOOS4 scores at 12 months were 78.3 (SD, 12.0; 95% CI, 75.2-81.4) in the PRP group and 76.8 (SD, 11.9; 95% CI, 73.7-79.9) in the control group (adjusted mean between-group difference, 2.0; 95% CI, -2.3 to 6.3; P = .36). Secondary outcomes were not statistically significantly different between the 2 groups except for sports and recreation level and graft maturity at 6 months. Intervention-related adverse events included pain at the injection site and knee swelling after injection. Conclusions and Relevance: In this randomized clinical trial among patients undergoing ACLR, the addition of postoperative intra-articular PRP injection did not result in superior improvement of knee symptoms and function at 12 months compared with no postoperative injection. Further studies are required to determine appropriate indications for PRP in musculoskeletal disorders. Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry Identifier: ChiCTR2000040262.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To assess the postoperative outcomes of double level knee derotational osteotomy (KDRO) combined with medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction (MPFLR), and to compare it with tibial tuber transfer (TTT) and MPFLR without derotational osteotomy in patients with recurrent patellar instability (RPI) and a marked torsional deformity. METHODS: From March 2020 to December 2021, patients with torsion deformity (combined femoral torsion and tibial torsion ≥ 30°) were retrospectively included. The minimum follow-up time was 18 months. Patients received KDRO and MPFLR were categorized into KDRO group and patients received a combined TTT and MPFLR were categorized into control group. Preoperative and postoperative clinical symptoms, patient-reported outcomes (PROs) (Kujala, visual analogue scale [VAS], Lysholm, International Knee Documentation Committee [IKDC], Tegner, and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome [KOOS] scores) and imaging parameters (femoral torsion, tibial torsion, patellar height, femoral trochlear dysplasia, congruence angle, patellar tilt angle, lateral patellar angle, lateral patellar translation, and tibial tubercle-trochlear groove distance) were analyzed. RESULTS: In all, 36 patients were included with 18 in KDRO group and 18 in control group. The mean follow-up time was 30 (range 21-39) months. At the latest follow-up, no patient experienced re-dislocation in either group. Except for the femoral torsion and tibial torsion in the control group, postoperative imaging parameters were significantly reduced to the normal range. KDRO group has a lower patellar tilt angle (P=.043, effect size 0.64). All clinical scores in both groups significantly improved postoperatively. KDRO group has better functional scores than control group except the KOOS daily living activities subscore and the KOOS sports and recreation subscore. More proportions of patients in KDRO group met the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for most PROs than control group. Eight patients (44%) in the control group complained of postoperative anterior knee pain, compared with 1 patient (6%) in KDRO group (P=.018). CONCLUSION: KDRO combined with MPFLR was associated with better postoperative outcomes than TTT combined with MPFLR in patients with RPI and a torsion deformity.

Background: Recent studies have shown that regular physical activity (PA) can positively influence mobile phone addiction (MPA) behaviors in college students. However, it remains unknown whether this effect is mediated by other factors. Evidence suggests that resilience and interaction anxiousness may be candidate mediators that partly explain the positive effect of PA on MPA. This study aims to explore the impact of PA on MPA through a mediation model, and the role of resilience and interaction anxiousness in this relationship. Methods: The participants were 590 college students (272 males; mean age = 19.67) who completed a psychosocial battery, including the international physical activity questionnaire-short form (IPAQ-SF), the connor - davidson resilience scale (CD-RISC), the interaction anxiousness scale (IAS), and the mobile phone addiction index (MPAI). Correlations of variables were computed using Pearson's test. Mediation models were tested using SPSSS PROCESS macro with the regression bootstrapping method. Results: PA were negatively associated with MPA behavior (r=-.21, p < 0.01). Resilience and interaction anxiousness moderated the relationship between PA and MPA. More importantly, PA could also influence MPA through the chain-mediating effects of resilience and interaction anxiousness. Conclusion: It is essential to improve resilience and reduce interaction anxiousness to reduce MPA problems through regular engagement in PA among college students.

Introduction: The potential positive impact of computer game playing on cognitive function and its potential role in reducing the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been suggested. However, current observational studies have certain limitations. We utilized Mendelian randomization (MR) alongside extensive genome-wide association study (GWAS) data to examine the relationship between computer game playing, cognitive function, risk of AD, and levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Methods: We collected datasets on computer game playing, cognition function, risk of AD, and BDNF level from the IEU Open GWAS project. Causal effects were assessed using various MR methods, including inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, MR-Egger, simple mode, and weighted mode. To ensure the accuracy of the results, sensitivity analyses were conducted. Results: Our analysis revealed a significant association between computer game playing and cognitive function (ß = 0.801, 95% CI: 0.351, 1.328, P = 0.001). There was no statistically significant association between computer game playing and either BDNF level or risk of AD (ß = -0.112, 95%CI: -1.315, 1.091, P = 0.855; OR = 1.000, 95% CI: 1.004, 0.997, P = 0.891, respectively). We further confirmed the reliability of our evidence through the MR-Egger intercept test, MR-PRESSO global test, Cochran's Q test, and funnel plots. Conclusion: The results of our study indicate that engaging in computer game playing may confer a safeguarding influence on cognitive function. This underscores the potential advantages associated with computer gaming. Nevertheless, given the constraints inherent in our research, further investigation is warranted to substantiate our findings and delve into the underlying mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) has been used to improve athletic performance in various populations; however, its role in improving performance in elite athletes is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a-tDCS on athletic performance in elite athletes. Methods: We used a single-blind, randomized controlled experimental design and recruited 24 national-level freestyle swimmers from China. All athletes were randomly divided into two groups; the experimental group underwent a-tDCS (current 2 mA for 20 min) combined with physical training, and the control group underwent a-tDCS sham stimulation combined with physical training. The physical training program was identical in the experimental and control groups. The intervention period was 6 weeks, with five weekly sessions of 110 min each, consisting of 20 min of a-tDCS and 90 min of physical training. Base strength, explosive strength, aerobic endurance, and anaerobic endurance were measured in the athletes before and after the intervention. Results: The results were as follows. 1) Basic strength: There was a significant improvement in 5RM pull-ups in the experimental and control groups before and after the intervention (p < 0.05). 2) Explosive strength: There was a significant improvement in vertical jump and swimming start distance into the water in the experimental and control groups before and after the intervention (p < 0.05). 3) Aerobic endurance: There was no significant improvement in the experimental and control groups before and after the intervention. 4) Anaerobic endurance: There was a significant improvement in 400 m running performance in the experimental and control groups before and after the intervention (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Compared to physical training alone, a-tDCS combined with physical training can better improve the athletic performance of high-level swimmers, especially in basic strength, explosive strength, and aerobic endurance.

ABSTRACT

The flower-infecting fungus Ustilaginoidea virens causes rice false smut, which is a severe emerging disease threatening rice (Oryza sativa) production worldwide. False smut not only reduces yield, but more importantly produces toxins on grains, posing a great threat to food safety. U. virens invades spikelets via the gap between the 2 bracts (lemma and palea) enclosing the floret and specifically infects the stamen and pistil. Molecular mechanisms for the U. virens-rice interaction are largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that rice flowers predominantly employ chitin-triggered immunity against U. virens in the lemma and palea, rather than in the stamen and pistil. We identify a crucial U. virens virulence factor, named UvGH18.1, which carries glycoside hydrolase activity. Mechanistically, UvGH18.1 functions by binding to and hydrolyzing immune elicitor chitin and interacting with the chitin receptor CHITIN ELICITOR BINDING PROTEIN (OsCEBiP) and co-receptor CHITIN ELICITOR RECEPTOR KINASE1 (OsCERK1) to impair their chitin-induced dimerization, suppressing host immunity exerted at the lemma and palea for gaining access to the stamen and pistil. Conversely, pretreatment on spikelets with chitin induces a defense response in the lemma and palea, promoting resistance against U. virens. Collectively, our data uncover a mechanism for a U. virens virulence factor and the critical location of the host-pathogen interaction in flowers and provide a potential strategy to control rice false smut disease.

ABSTRACT

Peach (Prunus persica) landrace has typical regional characteristics, strong environmental adaptability, and contains many valuable genes that provide the foundation for breeding excellent varieties. Therefore, it is necessary to assemble the genomes of specific landraces to facilitate the localization and utilization of these genes. Here, we de novo assembled a high-quality genome from an ancient blood-fleshed Chinese landrace Tianjin ShuiMi (TJSM) that originated from the China North Plain. The assembled genome size was 243.5 Mb with a contig N50 of 23.7 Mb and a scaffold N50 of 28.6 Mb. Compared with the reported peach genomes, our assembled TJSM genome had the largest number of specific structural variants (SVs) and long terminal repeat-retrotransposons (LTR-RTs). Among the LTR-RTs with the potential to regulate their host genes, we identified a 6688 bp LTR-RT (named it blood TE) in the promoter of NAC transcription factor-encoding PpBL, a gene regulating peach blood-flesh formation. The blood TE was not only co-separated with the blood-flesh phenotype but also associated with fruit maturity date advancement and different intensities of blood-flesh color formation. Our findings provide new insights into the mechanism underlying the development of the blood-flesh color and determination of fruit maturity date and highlight the potential of the TJSM genome to mine more variations related to agronomic traits in peach fruit.

Purpose: The deleterious impact of aggressive behavior on college students necessitates urgent mitigation. To explore the influencing factors and underlying mechanisms of aggressive behaviors among college students, this study aims to validate the mediating roles of life satisfaction, meaning in life, and depression by examining the relationship between physical exercise and aggressive behaviors among college students. Methods: The Physical Activity Rating Scale-3 (PARS-3), Satisfaction with Life Scale, Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Chinese Version DASS-21 and 12-item Perception of Aggression Scale (POAS) were tested on 1596 college students from three universities in western China, and SPSS 26.0 and Mplus 8.3 were used for analysis. Results: Physical exercise exhibited a significant negative correlation with both aggressive behaviors and depression among college students (r = -0.57, P < 0.001; r = -0.36, P < 0.001), as well as a significant positive correlation with life satisfaction and meaning in life (r = 0.45, P < 0.001; r = 0.27, P < 0.001). Regarding the impact of physical exercise on aggressive behaviors among college students, the mediating effects of life satisfaction, meaning in life, and depression were significant. The respective effect sizes were -0.11, -0.08, and -0.03. The chain mediation effect of life satisfaction through depression was also found to be significant, with an effect size of -0.02. Conclusion: This study elucidates the mechanistic pathways through which physical exercise influences aggressive behavior among college students. The relationship between physical exercise and aggressive behavior is influenced by the individual mediating effects of life satisfaction, meaning in life, and depression, as well as the chain mediation effect of life satisfaction through depression. These findings provide a novel perspective on the prevention and intervention of aggressive behaviors among college students in China and potentially worldwide. This suggests that more attention should be paid to the organic combination of students' physical activity and mental health education.

ABSTRACT

We conducted an umbrella review of virtual reality (VR) technology interventions and cognitive improvement in older adults with cognitive disorders to establish a hierarchy of evidence. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO databases from database creation to February 2023. We included meta-analyses relevant to our study objectives for the overall review. We assessed the methodological quality according to AMSTAR2, and we used the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) method to assess the credibility of the evidence. This overall review was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42023423063). We identified six meta-analyses that included 12 cognitive outcomes, but only memory (Standardized Mean Difference(SMD) = 0.27, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.04 to 0.49), depression (SMD = -1.26, 95% CI: -1.8 to -0.72), and global cognition (SMD = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.18 to 0.66) improved through the VR technology intervention. Using the 95% prediction interval (PI) results, we found that VR technology did not significantly affect the cognitive abilities of people with cognitive decline despite increasing the subject size. We conclude that the VR technology intervention improved only specific cognitive abilities.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Exergames are promising exercise tools for improving health. To the best of our knowledge, no systematic review has compared the effects of commercial exergames and conventional exercises on improving executive functions (EFs) in children and adolescents. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of commercial exergames and conventional exercises on improving EFs in children and adolescents. METHODS: Following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, 5 randomized controlled trial (RCT) databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, and SPORTDiscus) were searched from their inception to July 7, 2022, to identify relevant RCTs. The Cochrane Collaboration tool was used to evaluate the risk of bias for each study. GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) was used to evaluate the overall quality of evidence. RESULTS: In total, 8 RCTs including 435 children and adolescents were included in the analysis. Commercial exergames had no significant benefit on overall EFs compared to conventional exercises (Hedges g=1.464, 95% CI -0.352 to 3.280; P=.06). For core EFs, there was no evidence to suggest that commercial exergames are more beneficial for improving cognitive flexibility (g=0.906, 95% CI -0.274 to 2.086; P=.13), inhibitory control (g=1.323, 95% CI -0.398 to 3.044; P=.13), or working memory (g=2.420, 95% CI -1.199 to 6.038; P=.19) than conventional exercises. We rated the evidence for overall EFs, cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, and working memory as being of very low quality due to inconsistency (large heterogeneity) and imprecision (low number of people). Additionally, no effects of the intervention were observed in the acute and chronic groups. CONCLUSIONS: We do not have strong evidence to support the benefit of commercial exergaming on EFs because we did not observe a Hedges g close to 0 with tight CIs. Although the number of publications focusing on low back pain in older adults (LBP-O) and working-age adults (LBP-W) has been growing for decades, comparative research trends in these two populations, which may help to guide future investigation, have not been rigorously explored. This analysis aimed to describe publication patterns and trends of research targeting LBP-O and LBP-W over the last three decades. Peer-reviewed LBP-O and LBP-W articles published between 1993 and 2023 were retrieved from the Web of Science, which provided the details of annual publication volume, and prominent journals/countries/institutions. The relationship between the annual publication volumes and years was analyzed by Spearman correlation analysis. The hot topics and emerging trends were analyzed by VOSviewer and CiteSpace, respectively. A total of 4217 LBP-O-related and 50,559 LBP-W-related documents were included. The annual publication volumes of LBP-O and LBP-W articles increased over the years (r=0.995 to 0.998, p<0.001). The United States had the highest number of prominent institutions publishing relevant articles. The most prolific journal for LBP-O (5.4%) and LBP-W-related (6.1%) papers is the journal "Spine". Cognitive behavioral therapy, intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration, physiotherapy, physical activity, and walking were the recent hot topics and physical activity was an emerging trend in LBP-O, while surgery and IVD degeneration (also a hot topic) were emerging trends in LBP-W. This study highlights the paucity of LBP-O-related research in the past. The United States and the journal Spine stand out in LBP research. The research trend of physical activity in LBP-O is consistent with the recognized importance of physical activity for older adults in general, and for managing LBP-O in particular. Conversely, the emerging trends of surgery and intervertebral disc degeneration in LBP-W research highlight a focus on the biomedical model of LBP despite LBP being a biopsychosocial condition.

ABSTRACT

The tumor microenvironment, especially the extracellular matrix (ECM), is strongly associated with tumor cell proliferation and metastasis. Numerous studies have provided evidence suggesting that fibronectin (FN) in ECM supports cancer cell escape and contributes to cell migration, resulting in distant cancer metastasis and poor outcomes in patients. In our study, it was demonstrated that FN expression was elevated in tumor tissues from highly malignant NSCLC patients, compared to those with low malignancy (p = 0.0076). Importantly, FN promoted proliferative phenotypes and strengthened tumorigenesis capabilities in NSCLC cells, including A549 and Lewis cells, leading to sustained tumor growth in vivo. Mechanistically, it was identified that FN facilitated the activation of the integrin αvß3/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, which subsequently upregulated tumor stemness through the downstream transcription factor SOX2. Blockade of integrin αvß3 signal efficiently suppressed NSCLC proliferation and tumorigenesis both in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that extracellular FN could facilitate NSCLC development through the integrin αvß3/PI3K/AKT/SOX2 signaling pathway. Blockade of integrin αvß3 could efficiently enhance the anticancer effects of chemotherapy, offering an innovative approach for clinical NSCLC therapy.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to highlight recent research work on topics around prosthetic feet through a scientometric analysis and historical review. The most cited publications from the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection database were identified and analyzed from 1 January 2000 to 31 October 2022. Original articles, reviews with full manuscripts, conference proceedings, early access documents, and meeting abstracts were included. A scientometric visualization analysis of the bibliometric information related to the publications, including the countries, institutions, journals, references, and keywords, was conducted. A total of 1827 publications met the search criteria in this study. The related publications grouped by year show an overall trend of increase during the two decades from 2000 to 2022. The United States is ranked first in terms of overall influence in this field (n = 774). The Northwestern University has published the most papers on prosthetic feet (n = 84). Prosthetics and Orthotics International has published the largest number of studies on prosthetic feet (n = 151). During recent years, a number of studies with citation bursts and burst keywords (e.g., diabetes, gait, pain, and sensor) have provided clues on the hotspots of prosthetic feet and prosthetic foot trends. The findings of this study are based on a comprehensive analysis of the literature and highlight the research topics on prosthetic feet that have been primarily explored. The data provide guidance to clinicians and researchers to further studies in this field.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: There are several meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) demonstrating the benefits of virtual reality (VR) training as an intervention for motor performance, activity of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QoL) outcomes in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the aggregate evidence collected to date has not been thoroughly evaluated for strength, quality, and reproducibility. An umbrella review from published meta-analyses of RCTs was conducted to evaluate the strength and quality of existing evidence regarding the efficacy of VR training in improving the motor performance, ADL and QoL outcomes of patients with PD. METHODS: PubMed, PsychInfo, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched to identify relevant meta-analysis of RCTs examining the effects of VR training on motor performance and quality of life outcomes in PD patients. We recalculated the effect sizes (Hedges'g) for VR training using DerSimonian and Laird (DL) random effects models. We further assessed between-study heterogeneity, prediction interval (PI), publication bias, small-size studies, and whether the results of the observed positive studies were better than would be expected by chance. Based on these calculations, the quality of evidence for each outcome was assessed by using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) criteria. RESULTS: Four meta-analysis with eight outcomes included in the umbrella review was recalculated effect size. Pooled results found VR training can large improve the basic balance ability, moderate improve the overall balance capacity and moderate improve the stride length in PD patients. For ADL and QoL, the effect sizes were pooled that suggested VR training can moderate improve ADL and QoL for PD patients. However, no statistically clear evidence was found in walking speed, motor function and gait function during VR training. The analyzed meta-analyses showed low-to-moderate methodological quality (AMSTAR2) as well as presented evidence of moderate-to-very low quality (GRADE). Tow adverse reactions were reported in the included meta-analyses. CONCLUSIONS: In this umbrella review, a beneficial correlation between VR and balance ability, stride length, ADL and QoL in PD patients was discovered, especially for the very positive effect of VR on balance because of two of the eight outcomes related to balance ability showed large effect size. The observations were accompanied by moderate- to very low-quality rating evidence, supporting VR training as a practical approach to rehabilitation.

Objective: This study investigated the relationship between executive function and prefrontal cortex oxygenation during exercise in young adults with different Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) levels. Methods: A total of 28 amateur runners (n = 14) and sedentary college students (n = 14) were recruited. The maximum oxygen uptake estimated for the sub-maximal intensity run (4.97 miles/h) was used to indicate the different CRF levels. After 1 week, participants must complete the Stroop and 2-Back tasks in silence while performing moderate-intensity exercise. Using 19-channel functional near-infrared spectroscopic (fNIRS) to examine changes in prefrontal cortex oxyhemoglobin. Results: There was no significant difference in the correctness of the Stroop and 2-Back tasks between the two groups during exercise, but the amateur runner group showed an acceleration in reaction time. fNIRS results showed that during the exercise 2-Back task, the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex oxyhemoglobin was higher in the amateur runner group than in the sedentary group. Conclusion: Executive function during exercise was similarly improved in participants with better fitness, suggesting that CRF provides an excellent metabolic reserve and directed allocation for cognitive tasks during exercise.

ABSTRACT

Regime switching is ubiquitous in many complex dynamical systems with multiscale features, chaotic behavior, and extreme events. In this paper, a causation entropy boosting (CEBoosting) strategy is developed to facilitate the detection of regime switching and the discovery of the dynamics associated with the new regime via online model identification. The causation entropy, which can be efficiently calculated, provides a logic value of each candidate function in a pre-determined library. The reversal of one or a few such causation entropy indicators associated with the model calibrated for the current regime implies the detection of regime switching. Despite the short length of each batch formed by the sequential data, the accumulated value of causation entropy corresponding to a sequence of data batches leads to a robust indicator. With the detected rectification of the model structure, the subsequent parameter estimation becomes a quadratic optimization problem, which is solved using closed analytic formulas. Using the Lorenz 96 model, it is shown that the causation entropy indicator can be efficiently calculated, and the method applies to moderately large dimensional systems. The CEBoosting algorithm is also adaptive to the situation with partial observations. It is shown via a stochastic parameterized model that the CEBoosting strategy can be combined with data assimilation to identify regime switching triggered by the unobserved latent processes. In addition, the CEBoosting method is applied to a nonlinear paradigm model for topographic mean flow interaction, demonstrating the online detection of regime switching in the presence of strong intermittency and extreme events.

Previous studies have found that TLR4 rs1928295 polymorphism is associated with Body Mass Index in European and American Indian adults. This study evaluates the relationship between this locus polymorphism, obesity-related parameters and dietary patterns in Chinese Han Children. A total of 798 children aged 7-12 years were included in this cross-sectional study. An improved Multiple Ligase Detection Reaction was used for genotyping. Dietary patterns were identified by principal component factor analysis. The overweight/obesity rate of the TT genotype was greater than those of the CC/CT genotype (p = 0.032 and 0.048 in boys and girls, respectively). Boys of the TT genotype could interact with protein and cholesterol intake to increase low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (p = 0.02, 0.015, respectively), while girls of the TT genotype could interact with total energy intake to increase triglyceride (TG) (p = 0.018) levels. Boys predisposed to a healthy balance dietary pattern (HBDP) and girls predisposed to an egg/fruit/fish dietary pattern (EFDP) were significantly associated with lower rates of central obesity (p = 0.045, 0.028). Boys carrying the TT genotype and predisposed to animal food dietary pattern (AFDP) had a higher level of low-density lipoprotein (p = 0.017) and systolic pressure (p = 0.044). Our results indicated that the TT genotype of TLR4 rs1928295 is a potential risk factor for obesity in Chinese Han children and is associated with dietary patterns.

ABSTRACT

Neuroimaging studies have identified significant differences in brain structure, function, and connectivity between endurance runners and healthy controls. However, the topological organization of large-scale functional brain networks remains unexplored in endurance runners. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data, this study examined the differences in the topological organization of functional networks between endurance runners (n = 22) and healthy controls (n = 20). Endurance runners had significantly higher clustering coefficients in the whole-brain functional network than healthy controls, but the two did not differ regarding the shortest path length or small-world index. Using network-based statistics, we identified one subnetwork in endurance runners with higher functional connectivity than healthy controls, and the mean functional connectivity of the subnetwork significantly correlated with the three aforementioned small-world parameters. In this subnetwork, the mean clustering coefficient of nodes associated with short-range connections was higher in endurance runners than in healthy controls, but the mean clustering coefficient of nodes associated with long-range connections did not differ between the two groups. In conclusion, using graph theoretical approaches, we revealed significant differences in the topological organization of the whole-brain functional network and functional connectivity between endurance runners and healthy controls. The relationship between these two features suggests that a more segregated network may arise from the optimization of the identified subnetwork in endurance runners. These findings are possibly the neural basis underlying the good performance of endurance runners in endurance running.
