ABSTRACT

GaN is a one of promising materials for nonlinear optical applications. In this work, the broadband nonlinear optical response and potential applications for all-optical switching (AOS) are evaluated in low-defect GaN. In the pump-probe experiments, the ultrafast optical switching times are consistent with pulse widths accompanied with relative weak free-carrier absorption response, and the modulation contrast can reach ∼60% by varying the polarization orientations between the pump and probe lights. In the visible region, the broadband two-photon absorption effect exhibits excellent values for the imaginary part of figure of merit (FOM), providing the possibility of AOS based on nonlinear absorption (magnitude). While in the near-infrared region and under the presence of three-photon absorption, not only the real part of FOM based on Kerr effect is evaluated, but also the maximum light intensity for the usage of AOS based on nonlinear refraction (phase) is determined. The broadband nonlinear optical and AOS features in low-defect GaN will be highly favorable for the applications in the field of integrated nonlinear photonics and photonic circuits.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hypoglycemia is one of the most common complications in patients with DN during hemodialysis. The purpose of the study is to construct a clinical automatic calculation to predict risk of hypoglycemia during hemodialysis for patients with diabetic nephropathy. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, patients provided information for the questionnaire and received blood glucose tests during hemodialysis. The data were analyzed with logistic regression and then an automated calculator for risk prediction was constructed based on the results. From May to November 2022, 207 hemodialysis patients with diabetes nephropathy were recruited. Patients were recruited at blood purifying facilities at two hospitals in Beijing and Inner Mongolia province, China. Hypoglycemia is defined according to the standards of medical care in diabetes issued by ADA (2021). The blood glucose meter was used uniformly for blood glucose tests 15 minutes before the end of hemodialysis or when the patient did not feel well during hemodialysis. RESULTS: The incidence of hypoglycemia during hemodialysis was 50.2% (104/207). The risk prediction model included 6 predictors, and was constructed as follows: Logit (P) = 1.505×hemodialysis duration 8~15 years (OR = 4.506, 3 points) + 1.616×hemodialysis duration 16~21 years (OR = 5.032, 3 points) + 1.504×having hypotension during last hemodialysis (OR = 4.501, 3 points) + 0.788×having hyperglycemia during the latest hemodialysis night (OR = 2.199, 2 points) + 0.91×disturbance of potassium metabolism (OR = 2.484, 2 points) + 2.636×serum albumin<35 g/L (OR = 13.963, 5 points)-4.314. The AUC of the prediction model was 0.866, with Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) of 0.633, and Hosmer-Lemeshow χ2 of 4.447(P = 0.815). The automatic calculation has a total of 18 points and four risk levels. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of hypoglycemia during hemodialysis is high in patients with DN. The risk prediction model in this study had a good prediction outcome. The hypoglycemia prediction automatic calculation that was developed using this model can be used to predict the risk of hypoglycemia in DN patients during hemodialysis and also help identify those with a high risk of hypoglycemia during hemodialysis.

ABSTRACT

Background and Aims: Needle injection and needle-free injection were proven effective in improving glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. However, it is unclear if needle-free and needle injections of insulin during intensive insulin therapy in hospitalized patients provide similar efficacy and safety benefits. Methods: A self-controlled cross-over study was conducted on 62 patients with T2DM who received intensive long-acting and short-acting insulin injections with or without needles. The 7-point blood glucose test was performed on the 6th day after insulin administration and the injection method switched on the 7th day of hospitalization. The difference was compared in 7-point blood glucose levels. Results: The blood glucose levels at fasting (mean difference=-1.09 ± 2.38mmol/L, 95% CI, -1.69 to -0.48, p=0.0007) and post-breakfast (-1.14 ± 3.02mmol/L, 95%CI, -1.91 to -0.37, p=0.004) were better when patients were receiving needle-free injections compared to when receiving a needle injection. Indeed, daily blood glucose fluctuation, which presented as the area under the curve of glycemia, was decreased in needle-free injection periods (-0.3.48 ± 9.64, 95%CI, -5.95 to -1.01, p=0.0065). There was no significant difference in the dose of long-acting insulin between the two injection methods (-0.32 ± 2.69, 95%CI, -0.99 to 0.37, p>0.05). The dose of fast-acting insulin during the needle-free period was lower than that of when patients received needle injections (-1.66 ± 6.45, 95%CI, -3.29 to -0.025, p<0.05). There was no significant difference in satisfaction between the two regimens (-0.59 ± 1.55,95%CI, -0.938 to 0.509, p=0.557), but there was a significant difference in pain experience, favoring needle-free injections (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Glycemia was better controlled by needle-free insulin injections in hospitalized T2DM patients subjected to intensive glycemic control. These patients also experienced less pain than when insulin was injected with a needle.

ABSTRACT

Broadband reverse saturable absorption is systematically investigated via Z-scan, transient absorption spectrum (TAS). The excited state absorption and negative refraction of Orange IV are observed in the Z-scan experiment at 532 nm. Meanwhile, two-photon-induced excited state absorption and pure two-photon absorption are observed at 600 nm and 700 nm with the pulse width of 190 fs, respectively. An ultrafast broadband absorption in the visible wavelength region is observed via TAS. The different nonlinear absorption mechanisms at multiple wavelengths are discussed and interpreted from the results of TAS. In addition, the ultrafast dynamics of negative refraction in the excited state of Orange IV are investigated via a degenerate phase object pump-probe, from which the weak long-lived excited state is extracted. All studies indicate that Orange IV has the potential to be further optimized into a superior broadband reverse saturable absorption material and also has certain reference significance for the study of optical nonlinearity in organic molecules containing azobenzene groups.

ABSTRACT

In pursuit of high imaging quality, optical sparse aperture systems must correct piston errors quickly within a small range. In this paper, we modified the existing deep-learning piston detection method for the Golay-6 array, by using a more powerful single convolutional neural network based on ResNet-34 for feature extraction; another fully connected layer was added, on the basis of this network, to obtain the best results. The Double-defocused Sharpness Metric (DSM) was selected first, as a feature vector to enhance the model performance; the average RMSE of the five sub-apertures for valid detection in our study was only 0.015λ (9 nm). This modified method has higher detecting precision, and requires fewer training datasets with less training time. Compared to the conventional approach, this technique is more suitable for the piston sensing of complex configurations.

ABSTRACT

This randomized controlled trial explored the effects of a supine position or a semi-fowler position on postprandial blood pressure (BP) of older adults with primary hypertension and postprandial hypotension (PPH). Ninety-six participants were divided into the supine group, the semi-fowler group, and the control group with block-randomization. After a meal, the patients were placed in a supine position, a 45° semi-fowler position, or allowed daily activities, respectively. BP, heart rate and PPH symptoms were measured 5 times in 120 minutes after the meal. Repeated measurement analysis showed no statistical difference in BP, heart rate and PPH symptom scores among the three groups. BP in all groups decreased rapidly at the 30-minute point, and then moved steadily downward. Taking a supine position or semi-fowler position after meals had no effect on postprandial BP and heart rate after meals in older adults with hypertension and PPH.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To understand the social network status of older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Beijing, China and explore its related factors. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey using a sample of convenience was conducted. METHODS: From April to September 2019, Lubben Social Network Scale-6 (LSNS-6) was used to evaluate the social network of 300 older adults with T2DM from the outpatient and inpatient departments of three hospitals and five communities in Beijing. Self-designed demographics and clinical sheets, Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities Scale, Social Support Rating Scale and Geriatric Depression Scale-15 were used to investigate the related factors of their social networks. The Equator Research Checklist used in this study is STROBE checklist. RESULTS: The score of LSNS-6 of the older adults was 16.75 ± 7.02 (scale: 0 ~ 30), the score of family network dimension was 8.32 ± 3.63 (scale: 0 ~ 15), and friends network dimension was 8.43 ± 4.74 (scale: 0 ~ 15). Additionally, 22.67% of the older adults had social isolation. Social support, medical payment, self-assessed health status, residential arrangement and smoking status were associated with the social network level of the older adults with T2DM (p < .05).

ABSTRACT

Van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions, based on two-dimensional (2D) materials, have great potential for the development of ecofriendly and high-efficiency nanodevices, which shows valuable applications as photovoltaic cells, photodetectors, etc. However, the coexistence of photoelectric conversion and storage in a single device has not been achieved until now. Here, we demonstrate a simple strategy to construct a vdW p-n junction between a WSe_{2} layer and quasi-2D electron gas. After an optical illumination, the device stores the light-generated carriers for up to seven days, and then releases a very large photocurrent of 2.9 mA with bias voltage applied in darkness; this is referred to as chargeable photoconductivity (CPC), which completely differs from any previously observed photoelectric phenomenon. In normal photoconductivity, the recombination of electron-hole pairs occurs at the end of their lifetime; in contrast, infinite-lifetime photocarriers can be generated and stored in CPC devices without recombination. The photoelectric conversion and storage are completely self-excited during the charging process. The ratio between currents in full- and empty-photocarrier states below the critical temperature reaches as high as 10^{9}, with an external quantum efficiency of 93.8% during optical charging. A theoretical model developed to explain the mechanism of this effect is in good agreement with the experimental data. This work paves a path toward the high-efficiency devices for photoelectric conversion and storage.

ABSTRACT

A novel fluorenone derivative, FO52, is designed and synthesized. The fluorenone group is introduced to provide the central π-conjugated system in the molecule and triphenylamine is substituted at both sides. Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) from the terminal groups to the molecular center is confirmed via DFT calculations. Ultrafast optical nonlinearities are investigated via Z-scan and transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) studies with a 190 fs laser. Reverse saturable absorption, two-photon induced excited-state absorption, and pure two-photon absorption are observed at 532 nm, 650 nm, and 800 nm, respectively. The different mechanisms at these wavelengths are discussed and interpreted with assistance from the results from TAS. Furthermore, strong excited-state refraction and ultrafast negative refraction from the bound electron response are resolved and discussed in phase object pump probe (POPP) experiments. The results suggest that the ICT-enhanced optical nonlinearities provide FO52 with strong optical limiting capabilities at visible wavelengths and ultrafast refraction with tiny attenuation in the near infrared region. The combination of these properties in one compound could be attractive for applications like laser protection and low-loss all-optical switching.

ABSTRACT

We propose an evaluation method to judge the fitting extent to ophthalmic lens for the individual wearer. An Eye-Lens-Object optical system is set according to wearer's visual performance and the characteristic of ophthalmic lens assembly. A visual reference surface is proposed to calculate the object distance. The RMS radius of the spot diagram and MTF average value from optical design software Zemax are regarded as the criterion of assessing the image quality on the retina. Three cases are simulated to verify that our method is effective. The wearers can experience a comfortable wearing feeling when the evaluation method is used during the design of ophthalmic lens. The validity of our method is demonstrated to instruct designing the progressive addition lens with the freeform surface.

ABSTRACT

Images can be optically encrypted by random encoding in the phase, the polarization, or even the coherence of a light field. It is important for these optical encryption methods to undergo rigorous cryptanalysis. However, only phase-encoding-based encryption has been rigorously analyzed to date. In this manuscript, we demonstrate that the double random polarization encryption (DRPolE) is vulnerable to chosen-plaintext attack (CPA). We show that the keys can be retrieved if one can choose the polarization states of two plaintext images and collect the corresponding cyphertext images. Our study reveals a serious concern regarding the DRPolE that should be addressed in the design of polarization-based optical encryption methods.

ABSTRACT

A cyphertext-only attack (COA) on a joint transform correlator encryption system is proposed. Under the proposed COA scheme, the energy spectral density of plaintext can be calculated with cyphertext, and then plaintext information can be recovered by using a phase retrieval algorithm such as the hybrid input-output algorithm. We also numerically and experimentally demonstrate the COA to verify feasibility of the proposed technique.

ABSTRACT

Aberration detection of subapertures is critical to the resolution of a sparse aperture optical system. In this work, the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) expression of aberrations was first derived for the subapertures of a sparse aperture optical system. The aberrations were estimated by phase diversity, assuming that the photons follow the Poisson distribution. The derived formula has been applied to the Golay3 sparse aperture system to calculate the CRLB of the subapertures' aberrations with different defocus distances, fill factors, and ratios of photon numbers between the focal and defocal images. According to the CRLB criterion, the results indicate that the accuracy of aberration estimation increases as the fill factor of the sparse aperture system increases. The results also demonstrate that the optimal defocus distance of phase diversity is achieved when the CRLB reaches its minimum. The optimal ratio of photon numbers between the focal and defocal images is around 3∶7. However, for the piston error, more photons in the defocal image yield more accurate estimation results. This method can also be applied to the sparse aperture optical systems with other different configurations.

ABSTRACT

Recently, we have demonstrated that information encryption in phase space offers security enhancement over the traditional encryption schemes operating in real space. However, there is also an important issue with this technique: increasing the cost for data transmitting and storage. To address this issue, here we investigate the problem of decryption using incomplete cyphertext. We show that the analytic solution under the traditional framework set the lower limit of decryption performance. More importantly, we demonstrate that one just needs a small amount of cyphertext to recover the plaintext signal faithfully using compressive sensing, meaning that the amount of data that needs to transmit and store can be significantly reduced. This leads to multiple information encryption so that we can use the system bandwidth more effectively. We also provide an optical experimental result to demonstrate the plaintext recovered in phase space.

ABSTRACT

In this Letter, we propose an information encryption technique based on the theory of phase-space optics. We show that encoding the plaintext in phase space provides a higher level of security: first, the key-space is significantly enlarged. Second, it is immune to various known-plaintext (cyphertext) attacks to which the double-random phase encryption (DRPE) is vulnerable. Third, the bilinearity of phase-space distributions offers additional security. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculation results show that the proposed technique has significantly different responses to errors added to the cypheretext and the two phase keys in comparison to the classical DRPE.

ABSTRACT

We use aberration theory to derive a generalized pupil function of the Golay3 imaging system when astigmatisms exist in its submirrors. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation using ZEMAX show that the point spread function (PSF) and the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the Golay3 sparse aperture system have a periodic change when there are piston errors. When the peak-valley value of the wavefront (PV(tilt)) due to the tilt error increases from zero to λ, the PSF and the MTF change significantly, and the change direction is determined by the location of the submirror with the tilt error. When PV(tilt) becomes larger than λ, the PSF and the MTF remain unvaried. We calculate the peaks of the signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) resulting from the piston and tilt errors according to the Strehl ratio, and show that the PSNR decreases when the errors increase.
